This is a bad idea, because it really, REALLY fucks the Olympic competitors over. I say this because I knew someone who had gotten in the 1980 drafts, but because it was boycotted him (And all the others) weren't allowed to go: he tried going the later years, but in the end it ruined his life and 10 years later he killed himself.
If that is true it sucks so bad.
Russia made entire highways and brand-new stadiums just for the Olympics. No way would Russia accept for the host to be changed without a fight (bribing the fuck out of the organizers)
Russia made entire highways and brand-new stadiums just for the Olympics. No, I think we need to send all of our gay athletes to Russia and beat them on their own turf. Jesse Owens V2.0
This won't do anything because governments are afraid to upset relations with Russia.
It wouldn't. People with enculturated intolerance will find a way to express it. But it would deliver a message to the nation that sanctions (by turning a blind eye or even encouraging) the torture of it's own citizens that hurting and killing people is bad. Especially when it's over something a trivial as sexuality. On one hand, it could be said that the rest of the world would be trying to force Russia into their way of thinking. On the other, it could be said that Russia (by officially allowing gay folks to be rounded up, arrested, and beaten) is full of dick. Big, red, intolerant dick. How far away from interment and reeducation camps are they? I mean.. if kids can get killed openly in the streets with no arrests, what's to stop them from going door to door and setting up gay checkpoints? ... stopping there.. I get stupid when I type too long.
it's sad that I would not be surprised by this.
Wouldn't this mean that it is in fact, not moving on?
I admit, that can definitely be viewed as a logical paradox. But I meant it in a very gradual sense of the world following parts of itself into the future.
Actually no it would not. Russian Police will arrest you for being a supporter.
The concept of civil disobedience applies here. Make yourself a target of unjust laws, in order to draw attention to how unjust they are. Imagine the media circus if at the International Olympics, Russian Riot police enacted a bloody and violent crackdown on a gay solidarity march. It could even jar the somewhat complacent Russians out of looking aside. (Although, then again, the number of Russians who approve of how Chechnya was handled is... problematic.)
I would be concerned for their safety in that situation, as mentioned in the letter. It'd piss off homophobes enough just HAVING gay people, much less having them there showing gay pride.
Imagine the media reaction if they tried.
In a completely unrelated note why is his "forum" entirely filled with bots advertising kitchens? http://www.stephenfry.com/forum/
if the boycott didn't work. it'd still be cool for all lgbt supporters to bring rainbow flags to wave. i think russians need to realize the world is moving on.
Given Russia's current policy it probably wouldn't be cool to do that
fuck the IOC, seriously. all they just care about is the money, and that's why we wont be seeing the winter olympics moved somewhere else, or things like wrestling or softball from 2020 onwards
(Although, then again, the number of Russians who approve of how Chechnya was handled is... problematic.)
To be honest, Chechnya was a problem that was solved very directly. There are both good and bad parts to that.
Good luck trying to stop anything east of Austria being homophobes
Fun Fact: The Olympics originated in Ancient Greece, where homosexuality, polygamy and all manner of things now deemed 'taboo' took place.
It was considered honorable for an older man to pick a young, supple teenage boy and roger him up the gullyhole regularly.
Beautiful.
Russia made entire highways and brand-new stadiums just for the Olympics.
It was considered honorable for an older man to pick a young, supple teenage boy and roger him up the gullyhole regularly.
Samurai did the same thing. makes you wonder why all the historical cool guys turn out to be pedophiles
Samurai did the same thing. makes you wonder why all the historical cool guys turn out to be pedophiles
Maybe in the future, people will look back at us and say "wow, those guys DIDN'T ram teenagers all day? Weirdos."
oh wow russia is hosting the olympics!?!?
Hey man did you hear about the NSA spying on everyone? Crazy shit!
It was considered honorable for an older man to pick a young, supple teenage boy and roger him up the gullyhole regularly.
Being the person getting rogered was still considered shameful though It's not like ancient greece was a bastion of tolerance, you could be executed if you were a man who liked taking it up the butt

Was it some sort of status or dominance thing, that fucking someone up the arse was a sign of one's high status or something?
Now that I didn't know. Was it some sort of status or dominance thing, that fucking someone up the arse was a sign of one's high status or something?
Basically how animal hierarchy works
Basically how animal hierarchy works
Yup. Quite a few male animals rape their fellow males to show dominance. Pretty nasty business.
I'm not too sure we should be taking our morals from a society were slavery was commonplace and women were legally considered property.
Different times and different thought processes Does the US's history with slavery make everything else invalid too, like religious freedom? or taxation with representation?
