Screw civil liberties, gotta stop them terrorists.
It's in the name "Terror-ist". One who inspires terror. One who causes people to be afraid. And we've let them win.
Did you even bother to look at what their objective was? The terrorists failed REALLY badly. America pretty much did the exact opposite of what they wanted. It's getting pretty tiresome whenever someone just shouts out that the terrorists have won whenever the government does something stupid. They wanted America out of the middle east and instead they got the opposite. This does not in any way count as a win for anything.
Which is why the terrorists won, yet so many people in America (namely the government) don't want to admit that this is the case.
The objective of the 9/11 terrorists wasn't to get the US government to spy on US citizens it was to retaliate against western influence in the middle east and perceived attacks on Islam. Considering we have been at war for 10 years, completely devastated one country, extended our influence all over the region, and have killed hundreds of thousands of people, it's pretty weird to say they really won anything.

Yes, we went to the middle east, but it is in the name of 'Terrorist'. If their goal was not to spread fear than I propose we come up with a new name. Also. Wow, this is both great for me and absolutely horrible at the same time! This is just what my paper about the extent that the US has imposed watches its people using things like wiretaps and scanning internet usage and emails [editline]6th June 2013[/editline] that is to say that I have seen enough research on the matter to know that there is a very low probability that the government isn't implementing several different surveillance programs, every single one of them under the guise of anti-terrorism

This is big brother at it's finest, but you are a moron is say something sensitive over the phone anyways. At least find a way to encrypt that shit.
And what if they actually were stopping terrorist attacks?
They must have 1 huge ass hard drive then to store all of that information, just so no one deletes it, or looks at the deleted stuff, geez! Everyone should just get 1GB of useless txt files saying random stuff just so they download it like xYfGhXfA 1GB just so it waste their space, then their plan becomes unconventional and they will stop it due to data waste / money wastage, for gmail ect, flaws. :v:
And what if they actually were stopping terrorist attacks?
As far as I'm concerned, it's not worth it. This is a blatant disregard of privacy and the 4th amendment, all done in the name of "security."
It did scare the hell out of everyone, 12 years ago. Daily life for almost everyone now goes along without a hitch. The only time most people think about terrorism is when they see media about it. [editline]6th June 2013[/editline] How have they won? Because the government has enacted some mild intrusive programs?
It's bigger than you make it out to be. Mostly because shitty things like this pile up. Historically, no president gives up power they've been given by previous administrations. That just means it can only get worse.
How have they won? Because the government has enacted some mild intrusive programs?
If people actually think this is mild it can only get worse.
Heil Hitler terrorist bomb boom rug sack whitehouse bombing how to create own nuclear bomb from toilet tissue al-Qaeda im gonna be FAMOUS
So much for freedom.
skype calling time!
terrorism is the best excuse for anything in the 21st century
What's with the Government's hardon for wanting to cling to any excuse to strip away people's liberties? Just a few decades ago it was in the name of preventing the spread of Communism. Now the trend is in the name of national security and to fight terror. This is bullshit; we should just isolate ourselves from affairs and practices we don't agree with rather than trying to spread our influence and views.
Instead of preventing terrorism, this is going to make things worse.
this is fucking hideous [editline]7th June 2013[/editline] we are consistently setting the bar lower and lower for what we accept as okay under the fourth amendment and it's really pathetic
Just talked to my cousin who is in the intelligence/security community, they've been doing this for the past 20 years or so.
And what if they actually were stopping terrorist attacks?
So far the only thing that's foiled terrorist attacks since 9/11 is the terrorists themselves being such colossal dumbasses. Except for Boston, where it actually did go as planned for the bombers The best counter terrorism so far has actually been being deployed so that they go and fight our fighters over there, rather than our civilians here
The best counter terrorism so far has actually been being deployed so that they go and fight our fighters over there, rather than our civilians here
Yeah, that Hydra's got to run out of heads eventually, right?
And what if they actually were stopping terrorist attacks?
Then it's still not justified to gather tens of millions of citizens' phone records. Even a massive terrorist attack, say; fuckin' 9/11 scale big. That's still only three thousand people who died. That's still fairly low compared to the hundreds of thousands who die in other untimely, random incidents; traffic accidents, murders, work injuries and so forth each year. People sometimes die before they're supposed to die. Completely eliminating terrorism is not gonna even make a dent in the amount of untimely deaths, and while terrorism is fairly low like it currently is, I'd say just ignore it. Mourn the dead, of course, but don't fuckin' build your laws and life around the risk of terrorism. Now, when "getting-blown-up-by-dirty-muslims" breaches the top-100 causes of death in America, it might become an issue worth looking at.
preventing terrorism by terrorizing our citizens yeah, ok terrorists win, much?
"I love the future!"

Imagine what could be done to cancer, heart diseases, obesity and other diseases that are literally killing thousands annually with the money and effort that is put into surveilance?
