I was hoping France would win and honestly I think they played best for most of the game, but that doesn't mean Portugal didn't deserve the win. France didn't manage to put the ball in the net, while Portugal did, and at the end of the day that's what the game was about.
It was a beautiful goal as well, so there's that.
Gonna agree with everyone who said the game was boring though. The first 70 minutes were just ridiculously dull, and while it improved slightly after that, it wasn't exactly amazing.
I thought people disliked Ronaldo's attitude in general and that's why they didn't want Portugal to win?
Several reasons, Ronaldo's attitude being one of them. Portugal is notorious for diving and trying to play the ref as much as the actual game (and tends to get away with it), they played EXTREMELY passive throughout the entire tournament to the point where even in the finals viewercounts were dropping because nothing was happening, they reached the finals by drawing almost every game in regular time, they got really lucky several times and just because it bears repeating: they were one of, if not THE most boring team to watch this championship. It's one thing to play it safe/smart/whatever you want to call it, it's another to seemingly refuse/be unable to even attempt to attack until the 80th minute.
Ronaldo's attitude regarding the draw vs Iceland and his comments about the Icelandic's reactions about getting a draw vs Portugal didn't do them any favors.
You guys know football players aren't there to entertainment you, right? They're athletes competing for trophies.

The reason they're earning lots of money is because they bring in lots of money through sponsorships and merchandising sales. The more viewers, the more exposure a brand gets, the more eager they'll be to sponsor them. Less people watching means less exposure, means less sponsorship money because there's less of a return on their investment. Sure they're competing for trophies, but exposure, money and thus viewercounts are equally important factors.

What a naive view on football.
It's literally called the King Of Sports for over a century, everybody knows about it.
What keeps people interested in players, clubs and national teams are the trophies, the victories.
Euro Cup, World Cup and all the other tournaments for nations aren't about money or sponsorships for the players, they're about winning against the best in the world and having the bragging rights to say you're the best, you own that title. Giving something to your country you love so much.
Oh man, Jesus Christ, we are a small peaceful country, yet we managed to salt more European countries that the Atlantic Ocean with this win.
It makes it all the better hahaha
The game was utterly boring.
But I'm just glad that the most pretentious team of them all (hint: my flagdog) didn't get anywhere close to winning.
I usualy don't bother with national soccer at all because its a huge dick waving fest and Benfica's fans even disturbe me with their sureal fanaticism.
I cared a bit about this more to watch the game with my friends who don't go out much anymore, and because it wasn't nationals on nationals.
Portugal played well in that match tbh (especially the goal keeper) and that one goal was perfect but man so many tears from Ronaldo it was pathetic...
Ronaldo is a good professional and all, but he's a bit overhyped imo.
GG portugal but the match was boring as fuck :surrender:
One of the boring-est soccer games ever
Congratulations to Portugal for winning, I'm just glad that cunt Ronaldo didn't score.
Well as a football fan and a football player the game was fine, nothing special or memorable, in fact pretty much every single cup final that does not include my teams is exactly the same, a let down.
It was 2 different football ideologies pitted against each other. 1 Team defends playing on the counter, the other has all the possession and has to break them down. France played some great football but at the end of the day Portugal kept them out with great defending, even if they did require a bit of luck (most games require a bit of luck).
Football is won by scoring more goals than the opposition, you cannot lose if you don't concede.
The 'best' team does not always get what the deserve. Hell, the host nation, playing in a stadium filled with 80% of it's fans, against a team that almost went out in the group stages, that lost it's defacto best player in the final is an underdog story.
As for cheating, it fucking ruins the game and i hate it, it makes an absolute mockery of the sport i play and love, but both teams were at it, and had been doing it all tourament long. As it happens, the game was not decided by a referee decision and arguably nothing was red card worthy. So it ultimately did not play into the result of the game at all.
EVERYONE who knows anything about football knew what Portugals gameplan was before the game started, the onus was on France to beat it, they failed.
So all that's left to say is Congratulations Portugal, comisserations France end of story.
I'm just glad it's over.
What a terrible tournament.
the schadenfreude is real
i'm fucking harvesting salt right now

sports section of 4chan is essentially a knife fight between portuguese and french
Never forget that Brazil is Portugal's fault. They can win all the soccer they want, their sins will not be absolved.
Portugal played on par with Poland. I kinda would prefer to see the underdog win instead of the ladies team.

Brazil got nothing to do with us other than wanting their spelling mistakes to carry over to Portugal.
Is it really that surprising that in a Tournament Final both teams play cautiously? No. Not when there's a lot of money involved. This happens in every sport's final, so what's the big deal? Do you want to put everything at stake just to give a good show?
As a Portuguese I have to admit that until the game with Wales we did play like shit.
In fact that's been pretty much our modus operandi in every Wourld or European tournament.
I always like to compare us to those cheesy 80's american movies where some mediocre trainer gets to train a team of delinquents, troublemakers and low class kids and sudently takes them to Victory through a serious of random events and a bit of luck involved. I get that.
We fuck around, almost getting eliminated, we had a lot of positioning flaws during the whole tournament, but we always get to the finals by winning the important games fair and square.
But I'm sorry to admit this, as much as I don't personally like the attitude of some players, I'll say that in terms of refereeing, the game was balanced and fair. There were flaws but I think they occurred equally and unfairly to both teams.
As for goal opportunities the French had plenty. They didn't score because they failed and our goal keeper is a fucking legend. So that's about as fair and square as it gets.
Our goal was amazing, coming from Eder, who was actually an average player.
As a team. It was good to see that it didn't crumble when CR went out. And to be honest I think the guy's a great athlete and tried his best to keep in the field. He would have loved to play and it doesn't bother me one bit that he cried due to his injury.
France actually scared the shit out of us. Had plenty of opportunities. And still lost.
There wasn't any other factor on yesterday's game that justifies any undeserved victory from Portugal other than France being outmatched.
So I really have no other interpretation for yesterday's result from the French media as a tremendous butt-hurt. I'm sorry but that's the way it is.
There's not any other single reason good enough to justify why France lost. Specially when they had such great opportunities and still failed.
They lost, and we won. This may not have been the most entertaining Euro Cup, I agree.
Fucking get over it.

The final itself was extraordinarily ordinary, neither team played good enough to 'deserve' to win. But that's not why I call it undeserved.
I don't know about other people but I call it undeserved because up until the game vs Wales Portugal had shown NOTHING that was worth mentioning and went through either on luck (group stage) or not playing as bad as their opponents did. The group stage you survived by the skin of your teeth due to an own goal from Iceland, and Iceland managing to beat Austria in the last 20 seconds. Without that, Austria would've gone through instead. It was not due to their own performance, but sheer luck that it happened like that. The game against Croatia was soulcrushingly boring, though in all fairness that was not only Portugal but Croatia as well. Poland was overall the better team against you guys, though failed to score. Wales was the first match where Portugal played somewhat decently, and the victory was deserved.
And even if all that had happened I would STILL have been fine with Portugal winning if they'd actually played in a way that was fun to watch. Portugal's matches were fucking snorefests.
our goal keeper is a fucking legend.
Agreed on that regard, he played really well.
I watched the game yesterday (first football game I've actually paid attention to) and I felt disgusted as a Portuguese person. Both sides played really dirty, for shame.
Seriously, what the hell was with that headlock and that fake face injury from our side?
[sp]Regardless, Viva Portugal caralho![/sp]
I don't think people understand how much of a boring game it can be even in different kinds of strategies.
For example, I don't see a game where each team scores one after the other to be much more enjoyable than a dead heat between two teams.
Either that, or the fact that the teams playing aren't related to the people watching.
Even I was on the edge of my seat, and I find soccer boring as fuck.
