Whether they're raising their adopted baby girl, dodging homophobic quips from their fraternity brothers or teaching the "Single Ladies" dance to the football team after glee club, it seems gay characters are becoming a vital part of prime time TV. With characters like "Modern Family's" Mitchell and Cameron, Calvin from "Greek" and Kurt from "Glee," the number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) characters on scripted programs has just about doubled since 2005, according to the Gay and Lesbian Alliance against Defamation.
And characters will continue to identify as LGBT as time goes on, such as "Ugly Betty's" Justin, who recently had his first same-sex kiss. But Jarrett Barrios, president of GLAAD said, "We still have a long way to go before we're fully represented [on] TV."
In addition to the increasing number LGBT characters on scripted shows, which currently represents a little more than 3 percent of all leading and supporting characters on broadcast networks, there are also more openly gay actors and producers working in Hollywood, says Barrios.
Actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson plays the character Mitchell on the ABC prime time show "Modern Family." Like his on-screen role, Ferguson himself is openly gay.
They're really just using homosexuals as a way to either spice up the story, make a laugh, or something stupid. That does nothing to really diminish the problems associated with homophobia.
Ideally it would be that a gay character is no different in terms of their role from a straight character. Right now all it is is a gag.
Thanks for the link which I won't click.
To be honest. I think we have a better chance of Furries being better accepted on Facepunch before Homosexuals are mainstream acceptable.
its BEEN gay along with all of California
Thank God for the Ring of Fire
It's like all the blacks in the old television shows way back.

That's why I liked Phantasmagoria 2. It was an awful game, but they had a gay guy in it and for the most part he was considered a normal character. Sadly, I've yet to see a movie or game since then that didn't use a gay guy for a cheap laugh.

yes it is
Hollywood was always gay.

Well good thing no one looks to you for any sort of information because thank fucking god, you're wrong and an idiot.

Ever seen the office? The gay guy is so totally un-gay and everybody makes a big deal out of him being gay

:geno: And why is that? Not everyone in the world is as homophobic as you.
You are also comparing a sexual orientation to a freaky comic book fetish.
Needs more lesbians.

He's not being homophobic, he's saying that some people are so intolerant that [supposedly likely thing] is less likely than [relatively unlikely thing] - in other words, the notoriously anti-furry Facepunch is more likely to accept furries than for homosexual characters to be fully integrated into stories.
As a side note, has anyone noticed that East Asian characters are quite under-represented on television? Margaret Cho raised the point recently - there aren't really any vocal "yellow rights" groups out there, so Asians are under-represented. When was the last time you saw, say, a cop drama with a Chinese person in it (who was a copper as opposed to a Triad)?

You can count me down for one. In your life, you can have only ONE (legal) sexual fetish that is absolutely bonkers. If furries choose anthro's to be that, then so be it.
Hollywood isn't gay enough.

no, this is dumb and wrong. just because you can't accept homosexuals doesn't mean that other people can't

it's not that furries are immoral it's that they're so easy to make fun of
if they stop being so easy to make fun of and furries will be more accepted

he's saying that the state of the world is too homophobic, which in reality, it is
even those people who say they're accepting often secretly aren't and still hold homophobic values. A facade is nearly just as bad as being blatantly homophobic in social change.
also characters need to go from being "that one gay dude" to normal characters. The only television show I've seen actually pull it off successfully is (ironically) the absolutely terrible Sarah Silverman show
it actually portrayed gays how they should be portrayed - as normal people, with just one small fraction of their character is the state of being homosexual. In tv/movies now those characters are identified as gay instead of being identified as people.
I wonder how much Russel T Davis and his gay agenda had to do with this...

Jews and blacks are easy to make fun of, because there are so many stereotypes against them.
But... it's kind of against the rules...

Actually this. I don't have anything against furries, and if one of my friends told me they were a furry I'd be impressed and proud of them for having the balls to "come out", but you literally need to be on the internet for five minutes and you already know how to fursecute. I don't think very many people actually want furries to "yiff in Hell" - it's just funny.

My brother is into furry porn and when i showed my other brother, he was like "that's ok i don't see what wrong with it"
then i found furry porn on his flash drive and i was like "oh"
They're put in as characters, but not at all in a good way. Usually the gayness is hyped up all to hell, consuming the interety of the character, making them the butt of countless jokes, or a joke themself. Or just as a plot twist in soaps.
It's this kind of shit that allows trash like this to exist
Until we get a gay vampire movie, they aren't gay enough.
I mean a male vampire having sex with another male vampire...

Twilight 3: Broke back mountain
Well, don't the Gays feel just dandy and gay for the increased representation of gays?
I remember Big Daddy. Sure, it was an Adam Sandler gross-out, but they handles the gay couple in the movie surprisingly well.

If your definition of mainstream is far-right Christians, sure.
They're pretty much accepted most anywhere where people are civilized.
