Isn't the entire point of console gaming Plug and Play?
That idea has been gone since the PS3/Late 360 mandatory installs.
why in the world of fuck would you make installing your games mandatory especially when you've shafted everyone with a tiny non-replaceable HDD
Are there any benefits left over a PC other than costing marginally less?
That idea has been gone since the PS3/Late 360 mandatory installs.
the only mandatory install I've come across was Halo 4 on the 360 but that was only half the game and not nearly FIFTY GIGABYTES
A rough estimate tells me this means there's "only" space for 11 games on the xbone. Although you can connect a USB 3.0 drive to it and store games & shit on that, but that's kind of a clunky solution compared to swapping out the internal HDD for a much bigger one. Which the PS4 supports doing just like the PS3, although it's still laptop-size harddrives.
Actually they increased the bay size to 12.5mm so desktop HDD can fit in there.
Are there any benefits left over a PC other than costing marginally less?
Multiplayer with friends is about it.
Aren't you able to play while you install anyways?
only on PS4
Sure, it's game specific, but why the fuck are a lot of them trying to avoid local coop nowadays? That's like, one of the main selling points of a console. Playing with friends all in one room.
why would you let four people play a game using a console and four controllers when you can force them to buy four consoles and four xbox live gold accounts
why in the world of fuck would you make installing your games mandatory especially when you've shafted everyone with a tiny non-replaceable HDD
Well it's not that good for the disc to have large amounts of content being streamed from it constantly.
Are there any benefits left over a PC other than costing marginally less?
Consoles are still more convenient since you make one $500 purchase now and you're guaranteed to get all kinds of games that work out of the box for like, seven years
Actually they increased the bay size to 12.5mm so desktop HDD can fit in there.
Source please.
why in the world of fuck would you make installing your games mandatory especially when you've shafted everyone with a tiny non-replaceable HDD
I dunno for sure, but I've heard because of the wavelength that Blu-ray uses, although it can store more data per disc, it can't read that data as fast as DVD can. Plus Blu-ray drives are still a developing technology, so while we've got 24x speed DVD drives, Blu-ray drive are only at 16x. It isn't really a problem with movies because the drive doesn't need to read as much data as quickly as for games. But with games they move a bunch of the files over to the hard drive so the console can read them faster and you don't have to spend ages loading or something.
why in the world of fuck would you make installing your games mandatory especially when you've shafted everyone with a tiny non-replaceable HDD
Blu-ray is really, really slow to read compared to DL-DVD. Hence the PS3 needing tons of installs and the 360 not as much. Its either you install your game, or have massive loading times, or suffer performance issues from streaming content from the disc.
why in the world of fuck would you make installing your games mandatory especially when you've shafted everyone with a tiny non-replaceable HDD
bc optical drives are slow as shit and if theyre not then they become loud as hell i installed all my games on 360 since that option was there
Source please.
http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/168945-ps4-confirmed-to-ship-with-easily-replaceable-2-5-inch-hard-drive [editline]28th October 2013[/editline]
the 2.5-inch laptop-style hard drive is held in place with simple Phillips-head screws, so it’ll be simple to remove. Even better, it will fit drives as tall as 12.5mm — substantially more spacious than the PS3′s maximum of 9.5mm.
So, the fun part of next gen gaming will be watching TV while the game you want to play installs?
why in the world of fuck would you make installing your games mandatory especially when you've shafted everyone with a tiny non-replaceable HDD
You do realize if you have non mandatory installs that load times will be even slower than last gen right?
None replaceable HDD, but then 6 months later i bet any money they release an exclusive Microsoft HDD upgrade addon.
http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/168945-ps4-confirmed-to-ship-with-easily-replaceable-2-5-inch-hard-drive [editline]28th October 2013[/editline]
That's a change in the height of the HDD, so it'll fit bulkier laptop HDDs. Desktop ones are 3.5-inch.
http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/168945-ps4-confirmed-to-ship-with-easily-replaceable-2-5-inch-hard-drive [editline]28th October 2013[/editline]
Now you can get a 4TB drive
http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/168945-ps4-confirmed-to-ship-with-easily-replaceable-2-5-inch-hard-drive [editline]28th October 2013[/editline]
Those aren't desktop drives, although it means it can accommodate 2.5" drives often designed for small servers or behemoth 17" laptops.
Jesus CHRIST, does Microsoft not know what compression software is? OR is having "Large" games more of a selling point of the system?
Uncompressing 40GB of data each time you want to play, yeah that sounds like a good idea mate
Uncompressing 40GB of data each time you want to play, yeah that sounds like a good idea mate
Uncompressing the required data on-the-fly. It was once a required feature, so why ditch it now?
You can also pop in a SSD which is pretty neat. For about 70-80 dollars you have a 1 TB hard drive for your PS3/PS4.
Using an SSD might be a bad idea though, since the PS4 doesn't use trim as far as I know.
I don't know about you, but I never have more than 14 games installed at a time on my PC.
I have almost 150. I don't want to have to reinstall a game whenever I feel like playing it.
Using an SSD might be a bad idea though, since the PS4 doesn't use trim as far as I know.
Could be only a firmware update away.
Using an SSD might be a bad idea though, since the PS4 doesn't use trim as far as I know.
Hm yeah, the only time i have seen a SSD being useful so far was in a video of the loading times in GTA V which were pretty much instant.
Steambox's TB+ HDD doesn't seem so silly anymore for a few people here it seems.
I don't think anyone ever found 1 TB steambox HDD silly? I even think that you would need more.
why in the world of fuck would you make installing your games mandatory especially when you've shafted everyone with a tiny non-replaceable HDD
Same reason the PC installs games from disc, its faster and you don't have to suffer from shitty DVD/Blu-Ray load times, the small HDD on the otherhand is a problem but can't you buy cheap as fuck external 1TB Hard Drive's now?
