A senior Vatican official has attacked the legalisation of gay marriage in Ireland. The referendum that overwhelmingly backed marriage equality last weekend was a “defeat for humanity”, he claimed.
“I was deeply saddened by the result,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s secretary of state, said at a conference in Rome on Tuesday night. “The church must take account of this reality, but in the sense that it must strengthen its commitment to evangelisation. I think that you cannot just talk of a defeat for Christian principles, but of a defeat for humanity.”
The gay agenda has finally won the championship belt
Didn't the pope say that gays were fine though?
Man, it really steams my hams to see people find satisfaction in their lives that harms absolutely nobody except for bothering a bunch of backwards bigots.
Can't somebody please think of my rights to treat people I don't like as an inhuman subspecies that should be eradicated?

"Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s secretary of state, said at a conference in Rome on Tuesday night"

No.
Speaking at his weekly general audience on Wednesday, the pope said: "I greet the pilgrims from Slovakia and, through them, I wish to express my appreciation to the entire Slovak church, encouraging everyone to continue their efforts in defense of the family, the vital cell of society."
If you didn't know any better, you'd probably associate that quote with a rabid Evangelical Southern Baptist minister or Rick Santorum or someone of that nature.
According to granddad homosexuality caused the fall of the Roman Empire and not a complex myriad of political, social, economic and military factors.

I mean, I can see the Spartans and some Greek city states as eventually their population was surpassed and their advantages became dwarfed, but like Rome?

I wish super left wingers would latch onto this fad of blaming things they don't like for the fall of the Roman Empire. Know what I think caused it?
Lack of access to organic kale.
If gay marriage really did cause the defeat of humanity then I'd be even more supportive of it. Humanity's been ruining shit for us for way too long.
I have learned that the Romans actually had plenty of access to organic kale

(hint: homosexuality hasn't destroyed any society ever)
Hint: homosexuality as an identity wasn't thought of back then and having sex with men wasn't considered a break in heteronormativity.
(hint: homosexuality hasn't destroyed any society ever)
Reread the post, I didn't say that it did. Only that in the Spartan's case that it was a part of it more than the downfall of rome.

Wasn't it something like "You're only gay if you're the bottom"? Which had more to do with submission than it did heterosexuality.
Define "humanity" any way you want, Vatican. It doesn't change the fact that humanity is made up of people who disagree with you on this point, and they made that very apparent with this referendum. You can disagree with it all you want, but humanity is moving forward whether you're on board or not.

No, you're gay if you don't also have sex with women and have a wife. The word μισογύνης which turned into the English "misogyny" referred to gay men who didn't have sex with women. Homosexuality was considered a social-illness, something for unsophisticated boys.

His words:
“If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?” Francis told reporters, speaking in Italian but using the English word “gay.”
Marriage to Catholics is a licence to have sex with one person.
Its bad to have sex outside of marriage or for any purpose other than to have babies.
Same sex couples can't have babies through sex, therefore gay marriage to Catholics is bad.
IMO we just need different words for legal marriage and religious marriage.
Again misleading title. Words of a single person doesn't equate to an entire city state or populations beliefs.

Well shit. Guess they are still Catholic after all.

Vatican officials have a long history of explaining what the Pope actually meant when he said something that made every conservative christian lose their shit.

Excuse me, the people of Sodom and Gomorrah would like to have a word with you.

No, we don't.
Marriage as a concept has existed for thousands of years longer than Christianity, or any other traditional religion. No religion owns marriage, and thus has no say in what it can be.
Mating is not necessarily marriage. You can have a mate, you can have a child, you can have a family, and not be married.
This official is just speaking out of frustration. The world is changing, evolving if you will, and he knows it. But he and his ilk are stuck with their inflexible belief system that cannot change.
Wow

I wonder if we'll be like this, some day.
Sitting around complaining about what we perceive as culture changing for the worse.
not really surprising
