'Boaty McBoatface' polar ship named after Attenborough
What was the point in even asking though
I'm curious to the people saying this, because it's been a few people so far, you know this name was fourth place right? They still used one of the most popular names from the poll.
Leave it to people with "a sense of humor" (because research vessel Boaty McBoatface is only funny if you're retarded)

as stupid as the jackasses who honestly thought this was funny.
come on dudes
the fun is precisely in how stupid the name is, nobody's gonna burst out laughing from hearing "boaty mcboatface" alone
Why are people actually getting upset over this
Because they're stupid. Also, congrats to them for giving the government of the UK a $290 million reason to never let them offer suggestions about what to name things ever again.

Personally, I thought it was funny as hell. At first. But the fact people are actually upset over it... it's stopped being funny. They're not going to call it Boaty McBoatface, David Attenborough deserves this honor for all the work he's done (even if it is just a token gesture), and that's how simple it is.
tbh don't like the idea of boat being named after a living person

...why not?
Also, David Attenborough is 89-years-old. He's probably not going to be around for much longer.
Kind of funny they called one of the remote subs Boaty, since it's not even a boat.
should've called it subby mcsubface

makes it worse, when he dies thr boat will sink, that is why you only name them after dead people
Called it.
I just knew they would want something based on climate alarmism - and Attenborough + BBC are the perfect scaremongers for the job.
Britain is so predictable.

I think the Navy still calls them boats at least

what
"Boaty McBoatFace" as a name for an RC boat would have been fine. As the name of an expensive research boat, it would have been one of the first signs that the movie Idiocracy was becoming reality.

its not like something vastly important like the houses of parliament getting renamed super happy fun house or some shit
its a boat
[editline]6th May 2016[/editline]
the name wasnt important to anything except identifying it

Yeah, everyone will laugh when seeing the vessel itself and knowing it's named "Boaty McBoatface" instead. Wait, actually no, idiots will, normal people will cringe.

god forbid anyone get alarmed at the fact that our planet's habitability is rapidly sliding off a cliff.

Can we send this suggestion to ISIS's twitter?

I've said before that half the battle of science is communication to the public. While this ship has already done an incredible job at that, naming it BoatyMcBoatface would carry it on. People would follow an @McBoatFace on twitter.
The French named two different research vessels ‘Pourquoi Pas?’ (literally “Why not?”) which, in addition to being hilarious, is also the answer to the question: Why did you name your ship Pourquoi Pas? The University of Wisconsin-Madison has been studying Lake Mendota for over 6 years via the research platform ‘David Buoy’. And though the Celtic Explorer was given a strong and noble name, an engine incident on one fateful cruise led many in the Irish research community to informally rechristen it the Celtic Exploder (true story: I once reviewed a proposal that referred to it as the Exploder, throughout).

Did you know the U launched Sikuliag last year? Or that the British christened the Discovery in 2013? No? Well I bet you know about Boaty McBoatface.
The scientists agree. Silly names > serious names.

The people that will actually crew this boat are probably going to call it BoatyMcBoatface.
Was I hoping they would name it boaty mcboatface, very much yes.
I sure as hell didn't expect them to
shouldn't have made an online poll if they weren't prepared to accept the joke names
I love sir Attenborough as much as the next guy, but naming places or objects after living people is always a bad idea.
I was kinda pulling for Boaty McBoatface The Return.
god forbid anyone get alarmed at the fact that our planet's habitability is rapidly sliding off a cliff.
Without derailing the thread, there's a difference between:
1)
Incentives which aim to improve habitability of the planet by cleaning up toxins from the environment, reduction of polution, preventing deforestation
and
2)
Using the "threat" of carbon dioxide to implement global taxation and consolidate control over the people in the name of carbon alarmism, as pushed by the BBC. Instead of improving the planet for those that live here, those people actually want to reduce the population as if humans are some kind of scummy virus that needs to be extinguished while they get all the land.
This boat is all about research in polar regions, so it stands to reason that the whole thing is about climate propaganda designed to be used as an excuse to eliminate national sovereignty and consolidate the power of the bankers. If that sounds crazy, just sit back, watch the world get fooled, then come back in 10 years and tell me I'm still crazy.

"Pourquoi Pas?" sounds awesome and is actually funny, so is "David Buoy". "Boaty McBoatface" doesn't even sound any good, has no witty undertone and, again, sounds like something a mentally challenged would say.
I don't have any problem with silly names if they're funny and/or have some wit applied. It's just that this one is particularly dumb. In Russia it's traditional to name our research vessels almost exclusively after famous scientists and academic "nobility", we've long since ran out of names of people who are actually well-known or deserve wide recognition, something funny would be a breath of fresh air in this stale slough as well.
Those guys were untrue and fraudulent since before they chose the actual name; one of the top ones was "Blas de Lezo", a spanish navy commander that managed to sink a brithish fleet much larger than his own, a most impressive feat. But after they saw it reached the second spot, it """""misteriously"""" banished from the poll along with it votes, with no explanation given.

Why would you name a research ship off an enemy naval commander.
[editline]7th May 2016[/editline]
You wouldn't even name a military ship off of an enemy commander.

The fact is that the poll was there for people to vote a name for the ship, and if it had gotten the top spot instead of "Boaty McBoatface", they could have done the same and chosen another one. The problem is deleting it in its entirety and pretending like nothing happened.
They didn't say the top one would be chosen though, only that they would consider the names. I don't know why you guys are acting like its a subversion of democracy when it never was in the first place.
