I still think a general would be a very hard sell to both the conservative base, and the political machines in general. There's numerous reasons why eisenhower was the only general in modern times to run for president and win, but his independence and disdain for the political machines were some of them

Democrats and Republicans were both unsure of which ticket Eisenhower would run on, and were surprised he chose Republican. He kind of crafted the "liberal republican" by expanding social programs and numerous government agencies.
Idk our generals seem like wild cards sometimes. I guess the nature of the military makes them unlikely to give a shit about political deals and party lines.
