Don't blame Paravin, I bet he's risking each day to not get his precious device stolen. Outside Riga rarely anyone owns a modern device and everyone else has phones that still have buttons. Around my parts if you showed your iphone in public chances are it would get stolen or atleast someone would try to. It costs like $1k without a contract and that is crazy money around here. (my flag is lies btw)
"it's because it open-source" Just like BlackBerry OS, right? :downs:
Android 2.2, do they really have to be outdated? :v:
Probably late as fuck, but whatever. They will keep it on 2.2 to 1. ensure that there are no hole brought about by Google's updates, and 2. all updates will probably be cleared by oDNI, then pushed out by DoD servers.
Should had gone for Symbian or BlackBerry OS
Should had gone for Symbian or BlackBerry OS
Why?
They are still using Windows XP I hear. Without any of the Service Packs.
I have a brother-in-law in the Air Force, he says they currently use Windows 7 for mostly everything they do, I imagine it's the same all-around for the DoD.
Wish I had a Samsung/HTC instead of this iPhone 4 garbage, really.
Your average monthly wage is probably more than $800
Or they all sold a organ to afford it. Like some young Asians did.
Wasn't that only one isolated case where asian teen sold his kidney was it and bought ipad and an iphone? Or is that quite popular in asia?
There's been news articles about at-least 3 separate cases.
Your average monthly wage is probably more than $800
Even the damn kids got them. I kinda see how the "jews are rich" sterotype still exists. I'm here on vacation by the way. No huge fan of Israel at all. [editline]26th December 2011[/editline]
Or they all sold a organ to afford it.
Just imagine. Apple getting the balls to sue the DoD. Would be fucking hilarious if their lawyers were that lawsuit happy.
Pretty sure choice isn't a sue able offence but you never know these days.

Although I am posting from an iPhone, if I had any big secrets (such as ones the government would have), I wouldn't use an iPhone. Too much control and spying.
Awesome
Even before entering I just knew the OP would be mass-rated winner. But hey - keep on hating while I enjoy my device I earned with my own money.
I have an Android phone and a Samsung Galaxy Tablet that I purchased with my own money - what's your point?
uhhhh how is this a "major setback"?
Why compare at all? Why must a chunk of people read this and think "awww yeah they're using android and not ios hahaha take that apple" and another chunk think "why would you use android ios is the best thing ever". Can't we just think that it's cool that the same OS we're using on our phones (android phones, obv) is being used by the DoD? Stop the damn fanboyism

Stop the damn fanboyism
It's not so much fanboyism as it is agreeing with their decision, for their applications, yes, Android is superior. Largely due to it being relatively open for a mobile OS. It's just a nice bonus to see a fairly large organization not choose to deal with Apple (especially due to the way they have been acting recently), and this might actually prove Android can be so much more than it is currently.

I don't mind people supporting Android or even bashing Apple for all their shit patentwhoring recently, but when people take it to the point of blatant disrespect, that's just idiotic.
Take comfort in the fact that it's not a device someone would trust their life with on the battlefield.
becasue an android phone is going to stop a bullet amiright?
Apple is also slow at fixing security holds in its products leaving users vulnerable to attacks.
If by 'holds' the journalist means 'holes', I'd love to see some source on that information.
If by 'holds' the journalist means 'holes', I'd love to see some source on that information.
Me too. Android is well known as the least secure OS.
When the UK minister uses his/her iPad in the parliament, everything she puts on her iPad using the iTunes goes through Apple servers
When any person anywhere in the world visits any webpage or uses any search engine, their information goes through the server in question. When you sync stuff to your iDevice with iTunes it doesn't go through Apple's servers at all, where is the journalist getting his information from? [editline]27th December 2011[/editline]
If she is using iCloud all of her data is residing on Apple servers and Apple knows about everything that she does.
Simple prevention of said: don't use it. [editline]27th December 2011[/editline]
Apple tracks your movement through the built-in GPS chips.
Disable location services. [editline]27th December 2011[/editline] It makes perfect sense why they decided upon Android (because it's open-source, DoD can tailor the OS to their needs), but that journalist is seriously presenting some vague points about Apple's products. Where he is getting his information from, I have no fucking idea. It's not necessary to use anti-Apple rhetoric because you're writing an "Android-favoring" (so to speak) article.
I know they have to do lots of testing and stuff, but the dell streak was a really horrible choice. If they wanted a functional device with a large screen the Galaxy Note would have been a better choice. I'm sure the DoD could have gotten Samsung to make versions to work on whatever frequencies they need.

I have an iPhone 4- It has served me valiantly, with it being dropped on a regular basis. Were as an Android device may be just as good at everything, if not better- I still like my Apple iPhone. Explain to me what is wrong with that?
