Android Approved By Pentagon For DoD Usage, Major Setback For iPhone
I have an iPhone 4- It has served me valiantly, with it being dropped on a regular basis. Were as an Android device may be just as good at everything, if not better- I still like my Apple iPhone. Explain to me what is wrong with that?
I've dropped my phone on asphalt, concrete, wood metal, on the corners of tables, on the corners of table and the floor consecutively, out of a car, out of a truck, and into a pitcher full of water, and this phone has lived one year and will probably keep me going until October-ish when I upgrade. Everything works.
This happened with my iPhone 3G and I still have it, but boy does the power switch not work, the vibrate switch not work, the volume gets all wanky, and it look like it just came out of a poor neighborhood. So yeah, in terms of physical experience iPhones suck compared to Androids. (I do take part in me destroying my phones though.)
Also, no one worthwhile has anything against anyone for just having an iPhone. Some people get annoyed at cocky iPhone users or people who blow their money out on anything shiny and white from Apple, though. If you feel you are unfairly grouped into this stereotype, however, call them stupid and just leave. I mean come on - they're stupid, useless people that just want to bicker.
When any person anywhere in the world visits any webpage or uses any search engine, their information goes through the server in question.
When you sync stuff to your iDevice with iTunes it doesn't go through Apple's servers at all, where is the journalist getting his information from?

Simple prevention of said: don't use it.

Disable location services.

It makes perfect sense why they decided upon Android (because it's open-source, DoD can tailor the OS to their needs), but that journalist is seriously presenting some vague points about Apple's products. Where he is getting his information from, I have no fucking idea.
It's not necessary to use anti-Apple rhetoric because you're writing an "Android-favoring" (so to speak) article.
It's pretty funny because Google does similar things yet this article completely ignores the point, it's a pretty badly written article. Complaining that Apple records GPS/WiFi data, while ignoring that Google does the same? It's either an indication of bias or stupidity.

Google doesn't necessarily record what you do as far as I know, but some of the major Android companies do with Carrier IQ just as Apple does.
Sue the US Government for showing "FAVORITISM AND PROMOTING A RIVAL PRODUCT"
Scary thing is, I could see them doing that.
becasue an android phone is going to stop a bullet amiright?
So unless it's armor it's completely useless?
You're an idiot, it's going to be used as a tool in assisting the soldiers in various ways.
Counting how many bullets that's been fired and how many is left in the magasine is just one example of what smartphones are already capable of with minor tweaks.
And let's not forget the built-in GPS and Wi-Fi in many smartphones, that can be used by soldiers to alert other squads about their position, thus they can better plan their actions.
Pair that up with the largely Open-Source nature of Android OS, and the DoD can easily turn a run-of-the-mill android phone into a vital tool for every soldier.

But it can all be ripped out of Android completely, that is the benefit of it being open source.
They wanted something running an older version of Android (2.2), and they'll want to minimise cost, and presumably the Dell Streak's a rugged smartphone (relatively) which they can obtain in bulk really cheaply.
Oh so cost is a factor, I wouldn't think that when somebody talks about the DoD. Well if that's true then yah the Streak 5 is cheap and fairly rugged so it makes sense.
So how did it feel to spend your entire life savings on something that is going to be outdated within 6 months to 1 year?
As much as it is true-- but I have the buyback program anyway.
I'm Android and iOS, so I'm happy about this.

The newest iOS version (December, 2011) runs on the iPhone 3G (July, 2008). The same can't be said about Android backwards compatibility.

Yeah? And it lagged like hell and was terrible.
I can also root and put whatever I want on my phone.

The iPhone 3G was deserted on 4.2, meaning it doesn't run the latest version.
It runs an older version, severely handicapped with no multitasking or even wallpapers for the app pages. It also runs like car with one wheel.

The 4.2 version provided for the iPhone 3G does have the multi-tasking and wallpapers functionality in there, but it's disabled because it just ruins the performance of the phone. I reactivated it on my 3G to see if it would run, and it does. But horribly. Considering that Jailbreak developers had a working multi-tasking on the iPhone 2G, Apple did it purposefully to encourage device upgrades.

There is a difference between a bunch of people on the internet forcing something to run on some hardware, and the second biggest company in the world officially endorsing, supporting and maintaining an OS on different hardware.
[editline]29th December 2011[/editline]
I mean with a bit of effort you can turn Motorbikes into boats like they do on Top Gear or something. That doesn't really mean Honda is better than Yamaha because Yamaha won't do it for you.

But Apple doesn't support new versions of iOS on older hardware, just like they don't with OS X.

Yes but the person I was quoting was equating the ability to root your phone and install a custom to ROM to an OS upgrade being officially supported by the original manufacturer. I'm not taking away from Android the fact that you can do this in general, but saying that being able to install work done by 3rd parties is the same as being given official support and updates by the original party is silly. If anything, Android only has such a vibrant aftermarket ROM community since carriers/OEMs are so piss poor at upgrading their devices in a timely manner.

I'd rather have an awesome, invincible community ROM than terrible iOS updates that makes my iPhone even slower. I'm serious - my iPhone 3G was pretty fast when I first got it. After months and months of updates it seemed like Apple was trying to make get the 3GS. Screw that.
On top of that, being stuck on an Android isn't the end of the world. I still have the App Market at my fingertips if I'm on my stock Sense ROM. If that doesn't satisfy me, the community will with awesome custom ROMs.
