I would rather be shot by a stray bullet then spend an hour in church being yelled at by people talking about jesus.
If I post of video of a sermon then, will you close Facepunch? :v: Anyway, I read this article + aftermath on a few gun forums and the general consensus is that something like this is about as likely as Jesus returning to the Earth along with the Buddha as an awesome crimefighting duo. A 7.62x39mm bullet is going to have about as much energy at 2 miles as, well, not much. I'm calling BS on this story.
Unless there's some way to automatically detect the exact model of firearm used just by looking at a squashed bullet that I overlooked, it appears that they just noticed that the round was a 7.62x39 round and assumed it was an AK 47 simply because it would be more sensational. More than likely it was an SKS. But in any case this is really, really fucked up.
I thought you could tell fairly easily if the bullet retains any of the rifling marks on the sides.
That's horrible. I hope the person who fired the gun comes forward. He should be charged with involuntary manslaughter, and whatever the charge is for firing the gun like that.
The person who did it probably has no way of knowing that he's the one, since there could have been multiple people firing live ammunition into the air at the time.
"The bullet fired from an AK-47 assault rifle passed through the roof and struck him on the head"
They could have determined that based on the bullet itself. Granted, there are several firearms available in 7.62x39mm but those that use the AK-47 action are the most prolific. Second to the SKS.
I thought you could tell fairly easily if the bullet retains any of the rifling marks on the sides.
Most crime labs can figure out what caliber a bullet is after it passes through a solid structure and penetrates tissue. But a small detail like the difference between the rifling of an AK and an SKS would be difficult to make out since by that point the bullet would be a mangled mess. They probably called it an AK-47 because that would get more of a reaction in the media. Also while stuff like this is incredibly rare, it does happen and it has happened before. If you're going to be an idiot and run around firing your gun in the air use blanks.

The trajectory is a parabola, which goes up at a certain speed, reaches a midpoint where it's velocity is 0, then goes down with the same speed it went up. Assuming that both the church and the location from which the shot was fired are roughly at the same level, then the kid was struck with a bullet going at the exact same speed as it was fired ( Hence, he got hit with a bullet with as much energy as it had within ejection. That gun forum is full of morons ). The only possible factor that can apply here is deformation due to both the length of the trajectory, and the fact it hit a wall and went through it. At impact, it could have lost some energy, and would have been deformed, altering the trajectory, possibly downwards, then again that kind of loss of energy is almost minimal, you can and will hear of people being shot through walls with assault rifles, bricks aren't that strong. The shot is perfectly possible, the odds are small but it happens, and has happened a whole bunch of times, you just don't hear from them because they're usually freak accidents.
