Germans better start fucking researching better options if they don't want to look like fucking pussies and incompetent cowards who can't properly take care of their nuclear power plants.
more like swap.avi
More like shut down everything without even having a good replacement ready, causing economic downfalls up the rhine and listening to freaking green boys who have no idea what a country works like.avi
I know it sounds a bit like a conspiracy, but when Germany closes their nuclear reactors, France is the only EU country which has any major nuclear power plants (Infact, it is the current leader in that)...
I'm still bitter about this - in 2004, the EU decided to close the supposedly old and unsafe reactors in Kozloduy NPP in my country. They were built in 1991 and 1993 if I remember correctly. Most of France's power plants are built in the 70s.
I don't know about you, but I think it's some sort of bullshit to grant France (for some reason) a monopoly over nuclear energy. If I am right with this, in the next few years, other countries will follow in this.
It's a just a theory, feel free to bash it.

that's a bit more accurate.
swap.avi is actually a scat porn movie, because germans love scat porn, I guess I accidentally made a double entendre since they're going to be swapping out nuclear power for something else
Get rid of old reactors, spam thorium reactors.
Means they'll import more from our nuclear energy.
Get rid of old reactors, spam thorium reactors.
People in general are to damn thick to understand this :( it had obviously been a billion times better then getting power from coal.
If they're planning on the usual more windmills and solar panels, I sincerely hope they have a plan for storing that energy for use on cloudy or windless days, or for mitigating the power spikes during periods of high energy production that would put (and indeed is putting) strain on the energy grid. If not, they're being reactionary plonkers.
Won't that mean our electricity bills will be even higher? :saddowns:
I assume they're just going back to fossil fuel power plants. Either that or they have some diabolical evil plan up their sleeve, or a power crystal that they can plug into their power grid.
No
nooo
nooooooooooo
I've always felt that nuclear should only be an interim solution until better sources are found, but they seem to be really jumping the gun here. Not even considering thorium, or like most of the EU they're reluctant to fund ITER properly :/
I bet France is happy, selling them even more of their excess Nuclear Power now. Gotta love that hypocrisy.
Been hearing a lot about Thorium Reactors, and I think i'm missing the important answer to a simple question: how abundant IS thorium? Is there more of it on Earth than uranium, or less?
Also, Germany is being so so silly and sensationalist right now. No wonder the article popped up here.
Hrhrjhrh nuclear power plants are awesome. They provide lots of 'relatively' clean energy. Only after a few years you get a lotta waste that needs to be dumped somewhere.
Either way, they're a lot greener than fossil fuels.

Thorium is LOADS more abundant than uranium, it's basically a waste product from mining there's so much of it.
Stupid assholes should be using it right now. There's enough energy in thorium to power the whole world for 2000 years, and in that time we can switch over to fusion.
Maybe they found a way to convert stupidity into energy?
I can understand that they are afraid of nuclear energy. But since they stopped their first reactors, the co2 emission rate increased.
I like how nobody in this thread has a clue about the energy politic in germany.
I like how nobody in this thread has a clue about the energy politic in germany.
What ever your politics, it's still fucking retarded. Feel free to defend your country while you pay your higher bills.
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Before March's moratorium on the older power plants, Germany relied on nuclear power for 23% of its energy.
Well, that's not THAT much. They will probably get that much out of alternative energy sources by 2022.
I like how nobody in this thread has a clue about the energy politic in germany.
All I know is that 22% of your energy come from nuclear power plants. You already stopped some of the them and as a result CO2 production of your power production sector started to rise.
You are trying to compensate it by lowering CO2 production of other sectors but it doesn't seems to work yet. Now you want to cut off all the nuclear power plant by 2022 and compensate with alternative energy, but as it can give enough energy yet you will have to restart other fuel based power plant which will produce more CO2.
It also seems alright to continue buying nuclear energy from France.
So maybe I don't know how your energy politic works. But seeing those facts it looks like it's quite risky to completely exists nuclear power without having another reliable source of energy, even if in 11 years a lot can change. Also staying in the nuclear without thinking about another source of energy is silly too.
We need to move on, but we need another source before.
Well I understand this because AFAIK Germany isn't handling their waste that well. They're going to have hard time trying to replace it though. IMO all countries should do like they do in Finland. They've already built the repository tunnels and they have the money to start deconstruct of the whole power plant, and store all active substances including the reactors parts - at any moment. The cost of building more tunnels is included in the price of electricity. We're the top country in nuclear safety too. I visited the low-level active repository tunnel once and even that was quite impressing.
While everything in Fukushima was fucked up when they didn't get electricity, and the emergeny generators were outside, things are quite different here. The Finnish Olkiluoto has it's own main generator. If that doesn't work there's a national 400kv grid. If somethings really fucked up there are two extra 110kv lines in the sea bottom. If they are out, they can get power from a nearby hydroelectric plant. There's also 4 diesel generators for each reactor. In case things would seriously fuck up they built a 2x50mw gas turbine plant next to the reactors. If all would be gone, there's still a battery hall that has enough power to use all the necessary valves. Unlike in fukushima, there's also a system that collects possible hydrogen (what caused the fukushima explosion). The newest reactor is built to withstand collision of a passenger jet.
If I had to choose one thing I admire about the french, it would be the fact that 80% of their energy comes from nuclear power.
Clean, reliable, efficient, and no major accidents. The french will be well-prepared when fossil fuels start becoming too expensive.
now they have to go to fossile fuels or shitloads of renewable sources (which will still affect the environment)

The problem is nobody wants to build new ones, and so the old ones are rotting away. I didn't know that the safety features for powering the cooling systems at Olkiluoto were so extensive, that's rather interesting.
Ahahaha.
Guys, I'm from Germany, there's no way they will actually stick to this plan. There have been similar plans before and not too long ago they extended the deadline again. This new date is treated like a huge step in a new direction, but really, it's just an old contract more generous than the old one.
The current government is "pretty close" to the economy, they wouldn't cut their own donation sources like that. So far they've always found a loophole to defuse such plans after racking in poll popularity and if I trust my government with anything, it's coming up with such loopholes and executing them when nobody gives a damn anymore.
This is just a reflex from Fukushima combined with the fact we have notoriously bad nuclear waste deposits. That's (believed to be) a much bigger threat than spontaneous reactor combustion, tho some power plants have cheated tests so they wouldn't have to pay for repairs overdue since long.
We're using old mining caves with horrible conditions and the barrels are treated like toys. Everyone's afraid of that shit leaking into the ground water.
But anyway, no way they're really going to do that.
TL;DR
The government isn't dumb, they just know how to trick people and collect positive resonance while not actually doing shit.
Way to move backwards, hello to an increased rate of pollution and consumption rate of resources.
This is stupid
I bet they didn't even consult a single engineer on this
"Hurf noocluler puwer is dangerus stop all of it"
Sure, it's dangerous but raising safety precautions can ensure disasters don't happen
Fuck this government
First this Libya debacle, now this shit? FUCK 'EM
