When a container ship wrecks it usually doesn't render the surrounding area uninhabitable for years
It fact it may actually provide the surrounding area with millions of stuffed animals and Samsung televisions
What if it's full of oil? Like the Exxon Valdez
Haha, yeah right, 2022. They originally planned to take them off the grid at the end of '08.
I rest my case:

Great. Germany will shut down its nuclear power plants, but 10 more power plants will be built in the surrounding states, just so that they appear Nuclear Free.
Is it just me or does Germany have a history of being ruled by ideological idiots?
It kinda went down the shitter after a certain incident in the early 1930s. Before that Germany seemed to be run very well.
Like it's going to change anything in the long run. Instead of relying on domestic power sources they will most likely just buy more energy from the CZ and Poland. I can already see them putting money into Temelin.
If this is anything but a political stunt I'd be surprised. Likewise them trying to influence the EU to stop relying on nuclear power won't happen for a number of reason.
a) the French won't let anyone touch their's
b) they know far too well that they need nuclear power at the moment. It's less important if it is natively produced or not though.
Germans enjoy paying $10 per kilowatt hour if you even have enough power.
Same thing happened here when they started building the useless constructions called windmills. After that the electricity price has only gone one way and we become more dependent on nuclear plants from other countries wich you are now shutting down :s
What's wrong with harnessing immense amounts of green energy from a little bit of heavy metal?
Paranoia.
all the windmills in the world cant save germany now
We need more fusion.

Meltdowns and nuclear waste.
I don't see how we're supposed to make nuclear power a safer and more efficient alternative to fossil fuels if we keep banning it.
But seriously, shutting down every fission reactor seems ridiculous because of the energy they pump out.
I heard this in the news at like 8 am or something. I thought "Hey they must be doing it for some good reason or something..."
Later, I woke up and thought "What the fuck are they doing?!"
They will run in stand-by.
But hey, we still spend money to build some nuclear power plants in other countries.
That's pretty much the problem, I'm all for moving to a different form of energy if they have a plan but it doesn't seem like Germany has one. They seem to be banking on the presumption that we'll have something better by 2022, we might, we might not.
A better solution would be to tear down all the old reactors, build newer ones, and increase government safety regulation.
This. But because of the Japan situation, there is a popular, sensationalist and uninformed backlash against nuclear power.
i wouldn't worry about it, they are germans
as long as there isn't an angry short guy saying they should turn people they don't like into energy there won't be a problem
This is stupid. Where are they going to get the money for the energy that they have to replace and what about all the jobs that are being lost?
I assume they're just going back to fossil fuel power plants. Either that or they have some diabolical evil plan up their sleeve, or a power crystal that they can plug into their power grid.
Jew power plants.
Most people think WWII was genocide, but it was really more of a beta test.
They are a renewable resource and everything!
:P
But seriously. What the fuck Germany. How many tsunamis have you had since your creation? A 40 year old plant with design flaws managed to survive one of the largest earthquakes in recorded history. It only failed when a tidal wave struck that exceeded expectations. Other plants were also hit by the quake and subsequent tsunami and didn't fail because they a few more defenses in place.
Fucking ridiculous.

Coal and such are vastly worse means of producing energy than nuclear.
So when did coal become the only alternative to nuclear

Oh and since pretty much always.
Solar doesn't work at night and costs a fuckton. There are subsidies in place for certain countries, but those wouldn't even begin to scale for mass production.
Wind spikes too much and causes severe problems with load leveling. Can't store the excess energy because producing the batteries necessary would be prohibitively expensive and infinitely worse for the ecosystem.
Hydro is the best of the three, but utterly devastates an ecosystem and can be a nightmare to manage if human civilization is downstream. Hydro also requires a great deal of money and manpower to rechannel rivers in order for them to be useful and isn't even feasible most of the time.

Sorry but that's not correct, solar does work in the night.

and the american south can burn blacks!

Photo voltaic cells need photons. Photons comprise light.
Lack of light means no photons and thus no energy.

Newer cells can produce enough energy to function from moonlight afaik.
My country never had a nuclear power plant and we're doing quite good.
I hope our neighbors (aka Germany) don't stop selling us power. :v:
Guys, you need to realize how horrible Nuclear Power is, I mean, what about when the next Major Earthquake strikes Germany? :ohdear:

Which means they are even more expensive. And moonlight isn't always available.
Moreover I haven't heard anything about mass produced solar panels capable of powering a nation that can run on moonlight.
