Russian scientists urge 10-year ban on genetically modified products

I've waded though a bunch of big pharma crackpots today, so I honestly can't tell if you're serious right now
What.
how about we just pull all gmo and then we can stick our tongue out and say "nanana now u have burden of proof lol"
[editline]19th December 2013[/editline]
seriously arguing over burden of proof is silly and immature. who cares? i'm not even trying to say that any particular gmo technique is unsafe only that each one should be stringently tested.
logic101: if you are able to take action extra fast you no longer have to justify that action
That is not logic 101. That is antilogic 101
why not let this new medicine in the market and study it at the same time?
There haven't been any reported negative effects of GMOs (Yet), and most scientists say this is completely safe. Though I'm not convinced that they're completely safe. Unfortunately we need to rely on them due to so many mouths needing to be fed. If we banned all GMOs, it is likely food prices will soar and corporations would cut corners.
These threads are always fun.
Why not allow GMO in the market and study them at the same time.
That's actually not a good idea :V.
Give them some testing before you loose them, however outright banning everything like this is fucking stupid.

Some products[shit like that one ~magical juice~ made from prickly pear fruit] is proclaimed as medical stuff, and has a long list of stuff it can do for you, but its generally not required to do FDA testing or they can market it while waiting for approval. It's pretty ridiculous really.

It's not fucking immature
It's the basis of MANY arguments and theories, and why they are either accepted, or not accepted. Your argument is literally nonsensical, childish, stupid, and futile gibberish. You would rather see thousands of people starve to death than have GMO's exist for..... some reason.

I don't think you realize the amounts of testing things GO through these days, and the sigificant advancements in our knowledge on HOW things are being effected when we change them. I'm looking into getting more information, and I should be able to even ask a few experts since I have family members working in genetics right now.
You also never provided any evidence that was asked of you on page 1.
can you be any more sensationalist?
He can't actually. Fairly large tracts of people in India, China and other countries are hugely reliant on the higher yield brought in by GMOs and without them, many would certainly die.
Genetically modified foods that have gone through proper testing and regulations cannot and will not harm anyone. They never have. There is no credible evidence to support that they ever will or have hurt anybody.
Here lemme explain what GMOs are, as I understand em at least. As the name implies, GMOs have had their DNA modified in a previous generation. This modification has carried over throughout the years producing bigger crop, more insect resistant, ect. No outside chemicals are used in GMOs themselves (what I mean here is that chemicals and all that are not connected to GMOs in any way). In fact GMOs are sort of like specialized breeding, except there is a bit of a push given to ensure perfect results. Nothing harmful has been added or created to GMOs. It is completely impossible for them to harm anything, be it human or animal. They are simply another form of breeding plants for specialized traits.
Sounds an awful lot like this:

It has been tested, is being tested, and will continue to be tested.
These scientists want a decade of starvation to make sure that they are 100% safe before released to the population. You want a decade of starvation to make sure that they are safe.
Would you really rather have yourself be (possibly) .0001% safer, or have poor people in poor countries not starve to death and have all sorts of horrible growth disorders?
you would rather have people die from untested food then just test it for... some reason.
Uhhhh, are you just ignoring how many lives its helped, and the you know, complete lack of deaths?

yawmwen, You are seriously uneducated on the subject, yet like to spew your opinion around.
People like you are why society is being held back, take a hint and educate yourself before trying to have an opinion.
10 year bans seem very reactionary if Russia itself is suffering from famine as it is, why not have a large effort go to proper studies and oversight until a proper judgement can be made? This actually sets a pretty bad example for the whole debate in general, too.
There are plenty of worries though, GMO plants spreading in the wild at the speed of light is one.

we could scrap the gmo thing AND feed the world if we got our heads out of our asses and stopped distributing food so poorly.
like it isn't an either/or situation. you act like our only two options as a species are to adopt whatever the fuck you say or we all starve. fuck that.

Accept GMO because organic farming methods can only support 2 Billion people. Five billion people would not like to be eradicated thanks to some Green Peace Genocide.
By the way, Green Peace Genocide would make an amazing hair metal band name.
what we need is a good genocide then we can have all the "organic" food we want
how about we just pull all gmo and then we can stick our tongue out and say "nanana now u have burden of proof lol"
If you don't want GMO food, you need to stop eating. And by stop eating, you're not allowed to eat any type of food that has existed in the past 20,000 years.
GMO food doesn't go back this far you say? Wrong. Humans have been fucking with the genetics of plants and animals since farming and animal husbandry started existing. GMO isn't just limited to things that have existed since the industrial revolution.
Maybe you can find a small patch of jungle that hasn't been touched by human kind yet and eat some of the bland nutrient poor plants that exist.
You ban things when you have hard evidence that they're bad for you, not FUD spread by the organic food lobby.
We've been messing with the genetics of plants in a small and contained manner, that allowed for damage control/reversibility if we fucked it up.
The modern-day GMO implementation is a far-cry from that in every conceivable way. Stop pretending that they're the same thing.
Alright, I'm tired of the two page back-and-forth with neither side being proactive and proving themselves. Ten second google search and I've got 1783 studies to back gmos.

Even if GMOs were to be bad for you, it's very easy to say they shouldn't be allowed when you live in a country with such an abundance of food. I bet if you lived in an area with food scarcity you'd be first in line for the cancer-food.
We already did this
Food is much better here

Its funny that you joke like that when it really is true.
We've had a public conference thing a few weeks ago and a veteran of the GMO industry talked to us about the whole situation, and GMO can fuck up shit if not used properly (I can quote if necessary)
But yeah, I don't see why it should be banned. We don't have enough food as it is, so banning GMO would cause massive famine.
