I don't remember the Chinese and Russian guys speaking any English. Even if they did, the pilots from the rival countries of the US got killed while the pilots from our allied countries lived. It's not really a big deal but I was hoping for a story of an international (I guess in this case, Pacific based) team working together to fight kaijus without national boundaries getting in the way and it ended up feeling a little "America and her allies, ooorah!"
The Russians spoke english for all but one or two lines.
Alright, so I'm kind of confused.
They closed the rift in the first movie, right? What're they going to follow that up with?
Think Neon Genesis Evangelion, except with less 2deep4u.
But I would totally except EoE levels of wut.
Yup, I'm erect.

(some might consider me a bit of a fan)
I didn't realise pacific rim was so popular on here

Pacific Rim isn't anything like NGE beyond superficial details. Del Toto hasn't even seen NGE, or at least didn't until after Pacific Rim was completed.
I kind of see Pacific Rim like Transformers, they're horrible movies, but I'll go watch them just for the mindless explosions and robot battles.

I'm just saying that it's a direction that it could go in.

Except Pacific Rim isn't horrible, and unlike Transformers doesn't take itself too seriously and actually focusses on what people want to see, i.e. big-ass robots smacking the shit out of big-ass aliens.

Plus waaayyy better robot and monster designs, and less confusing sounds, plot, and action scenes. No mindless racist jokes, no misogynist LADIES LEANING OVER MOTORBIKES scenes, and no fucking product placement.
Its way less of a cluster fuck, more of a throw-back to Japanese Kaiju movies, and did I mention way better mecha designs? OH WAIT:

Drink this awesome shit in god damnit
I kind of see Pacific Rim like Transformers, they're horrible movies, but I'll go watch them just for the mindless explosions and robot battles.
they're comparable in that they both have robots and are good mindless fun, but that's about it
pacific rim didn't have terrible and overdone product placement, horrible cinematography, confusing character design or childish humor
Only thing that worries me, but then again, the scriptwriting wasn't the best in the first film.
I have faith in Guillermo del Toro to make it awesome and hey who knows maybe Zak Penn learned his lesson and improved greatly on his mistakes.

I dunno man, it seems pretty plausible that he was inspired by NGE.
If they introduce [sp]kaiju/mech hybrids and present it the way that NGE[/sp] did i'd love it even more.

Goddamn Cherno Alpha's design is so kickass it's criminal it was so underused in the movie.

The designs of their pilots when they're suited up is badass too.

They look like one of the machines from Unreal Tournament.
Here's hoping this doesn't go the way of every other damn action movie for the past like 10 years where there's only two fights and 90% of the movie is the male and female lead gazing longingly into each other's eyes
Only thing that worries me, but then again, the scriptwriting wasn't the best in the first film.
It's a movie about gigantic robots beating the shit out of gigantic aliens. A somewhat decent excuse to do so is the only script I need. :v:
I mean come on, Pacific Rim's script was TERRIBLE. So many plotholes, continuity errors and things that don't make sense. Yet I didn't care because FUCK YES GIGANTIC ROBOTS BEATING THE SHIT OUT OF GIGANTIC ALIENS.
The Russians spoke english for all but one or two lines.
Fairly certain all those lines were directed at the control center, which was manned by all kinds of nationalities so it makes sense for them to speak english.
I'm actually really confused by how popular this movie has become. My entire family found the movie laughable at best but mostly cringeworthy. Now it feels like I'm missing out on something since everyone else enjoyed it so much.
It's basically something any little boy dreams about. Gigantic robots vs gigantic aliens/monsters, with awesome CGI.
no misogynist LADIES LEANING OVER MOTORBIKES scenes
So this is misandry then?
Goddamn Cherno Alpha's design is so kickass it's criminal it was so underused in the movie.
Hopefully, they'll bring it back with some new pilots for the second movie.
More Cherno Alpha or Cherno style designs please Guillermo

Yeah, maybe he learned his lesson from writing all these horrible movies like 2008's Hulk movie and the story of X2.
I wonder if this Animated series will be Western or Anime?
I suppose Anime would make sense because Giant Monsters + Giant Robots = Sucess.
I enjoyed the non-action scenes of Pacific Rim nearly as much as the action scenes. Especially Newt and Hermann (the scientists) and the world building. Also it is the only movie I have ever seen where the male and female lead don't end up kissing after looking at each other after winning the fight. In general I really liked their interactions. Practically all romance subplots (or main plots) in movies are so unnecessary, predictable and boring I'd rather see them left out completely. Pacific Rim and Her are the only good examples I can think of. That alone raises Pacific Rim from a 9.9/10 to a 11/10.
Edit:
Oh and Up of course. Best love story of them all.

You know those two are not mutually exclusive, right?

Just like the first one was. I really liked the action scenes in Pacific Rim but my god was the rest boring. It felt like 80% of it was focused on awful characters doing absolutely nothing. No one goes to a monster movie to see that bullshit.
[editline]27th June 2014[/editline]
With the exception of Mako's flashback scenes. I thought those were well done. The kid that played the young version of her was really convincing.
Space Jockey on the background, there.
That reminds me, is Toro still doing the Mountains of Madness movie, or has that project been buried for good?
Pacific Rim kicked the door down for Kaiju films to make their return to Western Audiences. As a lifelong fan of big boys like Godzilla, Gamera and Ultraman, I absolutely adored Pacific Rim. It's a wonderful movie, and I hope to see it succeed again with its second film.
Also, if anyone is afraid about the TV show, look to "Godzilla: The Series" based on the '98 flop. The show was surprisingly good for what it was.

Don't be silly, that's a ~male power fantasy~
You know those two are not mutually exclusive, right?
Pretty sure he meant western style animation, not western produced.
Goddamn Cherno Alpha's design is so kickass it's criminal it was so underused in the movie.
One of my friends was wishing like mad that the next movie would be a prequel so we could watch Cherno Alpha kick all of the Kaiju ass.
