TRIPOLI, Libya – Moammar Gadhafi's forces on Saturday broke through rebel lines at an opposition-held city that is closest to Tripoli, in a dawn attack that could prove crucial to the regime's defense of the Libyan capital, witnesses said. They said the forces loyal to the country's longtime leader were inside Zawiya, 30 miles (50 kilometers) west of Tripoli, after overcoming rebel positions with heavy mortar shelling and machinegun fire. They said the shelling damaged government buildings and homes. The hours-long attack started at dawn and the rattle of gunfire and explosions could be heard as the witnesses spoke to The Associated Press by phone. They spoke on condition of anonymity, fearing for their own safety. They said several fires were raging in Zawiya on Saturday and that heavy black smoke hung over many parts of the city of some 200,000 people. They said snipers were shooting on sight anyone on the streets or residents who venture out on their homes' balconies. The city's rebels, they said, had retreated to take new positions deeper inside the city. "We will fight them on the streets and will never give up so long as Gadhafi is still in power," said one of the rebel fighters, who also spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.
Source Hope they get out alright.
It's not going to be an easy fight...
It's not looking too bright at this point. This civil war may very well end in a divide of the country, instead of a unified one.
It's not looking too bright at this point. This civil war may very well end in a divide of the country, instead of a unified one.
What the fuck? A civil war is ALWAYS brought out by a divided country
They said snipers were shooting on sight anyone on the streets or residents who venture out on their homes' balconies.
Wow, fuck you Gadhafi. I thought they weren't firing on civilians?
Wow, fuck you Gadhafi. I thought they weren't firing on civilians?
What? He's been bombing his own people for weeks now.
What the fuck? A civil war is ALWAYS brought out by a divided country
He said END in a divided country.
Mortar shelling? well shit, what would you be able to do against that as a rebel?
What? He's been bombing his own people for weeks now.
It was my understanding that he's been bombing protesters and rebels.
Wow, fuck you Gadhafi. I thought they weren't firing on civilians?
That's all they're doing :v:
What the fuck? A civil war is ALWAYS brought out by a divided country
I think he means, Libya may split into two separate countries.
It's not looking too bright at this point. This civil war may very well end in a divide of the country, instead of a unified one.
Libya is already a broken up country. It's made of many tribes which often keep to themselves (or even 'war' between each other).
What the fuck? A civil war is ALWAYS brought out by a divided country
Yes, just like the American Civil War.
It was my understanding that he's been bombing protesters and rebels.
I don't think he gives a rat's ass about who he hits with his bombs.

I'm going to see where I went wrong. Please, do point it out. Trunk Monkey said: "This civil war may very well end in a divide in a country, instead of an unified one". I am confused! Is this the end of a division of a country, or a contradiction! I guess, well.. a country is always divided. But you know, Gaddafi is going to win.I just someone jumps up, and pulls out their balls and tells the world "We're supporting their ass, 100%." America and other "super powers" wont. To hell with earth.

Trunk Monkay obviously was not referring to the country already being divided in culture, but divided in the legal standpoint of the countries boundries.

How about we focus our hate on Gadhafi instead of each other?
I don't think he gives a rat's ass about who he hits with his bombs.
Yeah, as in he wasn't specifically targeting them, but he wasn't avoiding them either.
Being a smart ass brings out some illogical responses from the opposition...
You're clearly the opposition here - you're the one who opted to bring that statement into question.
I think they mean that it'll be like South Korea and North Korea
so one shit hole and one nice spot
I think they mean that it'll be like South Korea and North Korea
Exactly. Another country divided, till they HAVE to fight it out to settle it.
How about we focus our hate on Gadhafi instead of each other?
Its a shame you're dream shares the same as mine. A shattered dream, that we will leave unfulfilled. A real, real shame...
Exactly. Another country divided, till they HAVE to fight it out to settle it.
Pretty much... :sigh:
Shut the hell up you two. Nobody cares. Move on.
I just don't understand how someone can follow Gaddafi and do what he says. There must be some over the top propaganda going on down there to make these soldiers think that what they're doing is right.
Its Gadhafi's country and he can do what he wants. I want to own a country :(
It's Gadhafi dicking around with peoples lives, he does what he wants, doesn't make it okay.
It's Gadhafi dicking around with peoples lives, he does what he wants, doesn't make it okay.
But its his country and nobody else other then poorly trained rebels opposes him.
But its his country and nobody else other then poorly trained rebels opposes him.
I fail to see your point. The guy needs his throat split open and needs to be executed by blood eagle and crocodile shears.

Those who work for him either want to keep whatever power they have, or are being paid to do what they do. [editline]5th March 2011[/editline]
I fail to see your point.
