It's relevant because it's their game and their style. Unless Platinum games follows it, I don't expect it to be the same. To make it really blunt, I'll take something you like, and I'll do it my way. It won't feel nor be the same. Also, Darksiders isn't a hack n' slash, there is much more to it, like Zelda-esque puzzles, dungeons, over-world. DS2 introduced lots of RPG elements too. To boil it down to a basic beat em up, is removing what made Darksiders what it is.
Why wouldn't Platinum Games follow the style of the franchise? It's already established what kind of game it is and core mechanics it needs to be itself. That is hack'n slash combat, a progressive storyline, backtrackable secrets, items to advance the storyline and overcome hurdles, different zones/areas and puzzles leading to a boss battle. It's all very generic stuff, because Darksider aside from it's setting is far from an original game. It's just really good at what it does. Also getting skill trees and equipment isn't exactly a lot of RPG elements, and they didn't add nor detract from the gameplay, it was still the same game just that you spent more mindless time equipping shit and figuring out what to sell and what to absorb. A feature that sounded cool when they introduced it but was implemented in a really boring, uninteresting and tedious way. I see no reason for Platinum Games to not be able to successfully take over the Darksiders IP, they make games of the same caliber and they know what they are doing, I can not see them being so incompetent that they can't hold onto an established style.

It wouldn't surprise me if they hired some of the former Vergil employees if they do end up buying it.
What happens if Darksiders isn't sold? Does the IP just fall into the cracks and never gets seen again?
Red Faction I was such an awesome game, I'd love to see it completely remade. And I'm not talking about something like MGS:HD or stuff like that, a complete redo of the game on a modern engine and all that jazz. It would be so awesome. RFI still kicks ass.

Better that than getting the Dungeon Keeper treatment where the IP gets owned by a new company and then just left to bite the dust (and then a decade later get a asia-exclusive money milking mmo that has nothing to do with the IP at all except for the name).
Wait, what. Whats happening to Dawn of War? Oh god... don't say it's going!

Capture that. Upgrade HQ. Make another unit. Upgrade again. Get some tanks. Invade. Rather than: Make this unit. Capture that. Build that. Upgrade HQ. Make better stuff. Capture more stuff. Make better thing. Upgrade HQ. Make super massive invasion army. Also, strategy was lost on DoW 2. tl;dr DoW 2 sucked ass. DoW 1 wins.

I have no doubt in my mind that Sega will do well with Relic. If the Total War franchise is anything to go on, we can at least say Sega has experience with Relic's type of games.
Goodbye Toy Head-Quarters (yep just learned it a minute ago).
