Guess its their way of getting a cut of potential Lets Plays and such.
Not a bad way to look at it.
Did anyone honestly expect anything else?
those juicy 5 minute lets plays
While it may not apply to Lets Plays specifically, Microsoft potentially profiting from filming their console ain't a bad place to be.
I don't understand what's wrong with this. Microsoft must have servers to store the videos and pay for servers etc. Even for Microsoft, having so many users doing that can be expensive. It's also an incentive for people to pay for Gold which they want people to do.

Been waiting to use this.
Why the fuck would people think this wouldn't be the case? For what Xbox Live offers it's a cheap service. No-one moans about Netflix's prices but that's like 1 and a half times the amount of Xbox Live. Microsoft have always worked this way and I'm happy to pay for the bonuses. And in reference to what someone said earlier, I'm not so sure that the console will come with the ability to record, purely due to the fact that it will be coming through third party software (Twitch.tv) and I would think that it was allows you to do so.

It does not use data, it does not need to have a pay wall for offline use.

A company is free to charge money for shit. What it "needs to have" is irrelevant.
If you don't approve, just don't buy it
every console has its dark side
Nintendo: Region lock
Sony: PS+ online
Microsoft: Kinect 9000/this
PC master race this time?
I have no idea what it will be like on the PS4 but PSN+ on the PS3 is fucking amazing. I've gone from having like 5 games retail on my PS3 to having that plus 10 games from PSN+ and I've had it during the summer only so far and the games are genuinely good.
XCOM: EU, Saints Row 3, Mafia 2, Spec Ops the line, The Cave, Kingdoms of Amalur and Need for Speed Most Wanted just to name a few.
I wonder where you all think this video goes... oh yeah onto the internet...
So why are there so many arguments saying it doesn't use data, of course it uses data -.-
thats fair
but xbox live gold shouldn't exist so really lol no its not fair at all

The arguments are that it doesn't have to use data, if the recording is done by the console (it is), then it can be saved to a local storage device or streamed on whatever service MS use (besides it's not MS taking the bandwidth hit, it's whoever they partner with).
(besides it's not MS taking the bandwidth hit, it's whoever they partner with).
Uh who do you think is going to pay them? As I said before Microsoft (and all their partners) are businesses, they don't run these things for their own benefit.
Paying for Internet access to play games/access perks for any console sucks considering I have to pay for my own Internet. I'm already shelling out 7,000 yen (roughly 75$) and 1,200 yen extra for an American VPN a month...on top of the 60$ a year for XBL. Sigh.
Jesus fuck, guys. If you want a PS4, get the PS4 when it comes out. If you want an Xbox One, get an Xbox One when it comes out. Stop bitching about "oh this is better" and "here we go again" because if someone wants a console you're not going to change their opinion.

You can buy Yearly Memberships for $50 in store or online through retailers. The only drawback is that it is not a recurring charge.
Honestly, people didn't expect this? It's hardly any different to the Xbox 360. You had to have Xbox LIVE Gold for most things on that too. Never really bothered me at all really. I've been a gold member since 2007. Not saying I agree with what Microsoft is doing as I do think maybe they could have the game capture for offline gameplay or so on.
On the other hand, it's probably because your game captures will most likely save to some sort of cloud where it is accessible again on your PC or so on.
On PS4's side, you need PSN Plus to play online.
While you already had to pay to play online on the 360.
Is it true that gold membership on the 360 will stop after a while?
So, if a LPer really wants to record things without paying, wouldn't they just use their own capture card and bypass the built in service ?
So, if a LPer really wants to record things without paying, wouldn't they just use their own capture card and bypass the built in service ?
Correct. Just like they do now.
To be fair, there's not much catching my eye with the xbone. The PS4 looks much more appealing (for various reasons).
Or I can just go buy a capture card and bypass this entirely in higher quality with no watermarks. Fuck off MS.

That's a bad mentality. Ignoring the issues can encourage other companies to follow suit and escalate it.
