Law to fight internet piracy rushed through - New Zealand
The Copyright (Infringing File Sharing) Amendment Bill, to combat internet piracy, is being rushed through Parliament under urgency tonight.
It would allow copyright owners to ask for a six-month suspension of the internet accounts of those who repeatedly infringe.
Outraged Twitter users have begun calling for the protest to be revived.
Two years ago, between February 16-23, internet users changed their avatars to black squares, to oppose Section 92a of the Copyright Act. It was backed by comic Stephen Fry.
The clause required internet service providers (ISPs) to disconnect offenders.
Protesters wrote to their MPs and 17000 signed a petition. Four days after about 200 people, marched on Parliament holding up plain black placards, and some with taped mouths, Prime Minister John Key announced it would be delayed.
A month later the controversial clause was removed and redrafted.
But opponents say the new legislation, which imposes a two year delay on the sanctions, still go too far.
The House is currently in urgency to pass Christchurch earthquake recovery measures. But a spokesman for Simon Power, who sponsors the bill, confirmed other legislation would also be rushed through.
Green MP Gareth Hughes is opposed to any restriction of access to the web.
He was unaware the bill was coming up today and will move an amendment calling for the clause to be removed.
''It really surprised me because we haven't debated it since November,'' he said.
After a select committee heard overwhelming opposition to cutting off the internet the legislation was revised.
The penalty remains but can only be brought into force by the minister by an order in council.
The Government will oppose Hughes amendment, Power said.

I can't believe they can just rush through bills like this.
Doesn't it suck now to have a unicameral Parliament!?!?
sorry New Zealand
so are they doing deep packet inspection on all of your shit or what?
it'll probably just mean folk will need to mask their activities a little more, this kind of bill is unrealistic but will probably catch most that don't know how to do so
you mean a bill that sits there just to make the books look thicker?
Seriously, everyone is gonna rage and it's gonna do fuck all
Living in New Zealand, the only thing that's probably fucked everyone off the most is GST increase.
Such is life in New Zealand.

If you go ask on the street most people wont know about the internet bill though. I havent seen any media coverage other than that article.
Yeah I just found out now too.
Same here. Might be that I never watch the news or anything.
I really doubt some ISPs will just snip customers off, Telecom might but smaller companies who don't pull in a lot of cash... Piracy probably pulls in the most money for ISPs.

Cheap VPS + PuTTY - configure as socks5 proxy. Done. No problems from your ISP in future.
I'm really not sure what to think actually. While I believe that people should have some control over their properties, to cut one's access to the internet is taking it too far.

Yes, how dare people want their right to privacy, what we need is a government controlled Internet.
I don't really understand why pirating/torrenting are illegal. They're not physically losing anything but a customer; they might as well sue the people who aren't buying or listening to their music or playing their game or watching their movie.

...
That's the whole purpose of them attempting to recover money. Loss of sales as a result of your sharing.

Not that the way they're currently going about their business is the right way.

But piracy DOES cause lost sales though not at the rate a lot of companies whine about. While one pirated copy =/= a lost sale exactly, you can't expect a company to perform just as well when they essentially have a competitor that's giving stuff away.

I wouldn't have bought any of this.

No lost sales.
Move to australia, buddy, it's just around the corner.
Idiot, when Australia bans internet, where are you going to move then?

And it's even incredibly easy to setup + Linux VPS's doesn't require you to pay for a OS license (unless you roll RHEL server or similar)

I pay $8 a quarter for my VPS (through which I proxy) and host my site.
This is so retarded.
"It was backed by comic Stephen Fry."
Since when was he a comic? :v:
