Oh wow its pretty awesome you guys missed the big "Bulimia" in the corner there. It's to make people feel better. And I mean here's a bunch of examples why.
but im a guy
Athletic != literally thin as a stick
but nah lets continue making fun of a bulimic support group and fat people in general
Lara has obviously exaggerated proportions, but several of these could easily be a healthy person. Some people naturally have small frames and fast metabolisms.

this one looks really weird, because you can tell that the original is heavily stylized just from looking at the face, but they only changed the body to be more realistic so the face looks super out of place
okay this one legit pissed me off:

women store their fat in their thighs and breasts and as you can see on the left she has some excess fat in both areas. This woman is a very accurate depiction of a real 23 year old woman (except for her stylized eyes that are common in japanese games).
now according to the official Dead or Alive wiki Helena Douglas is 5 foot 7 and I'm damn sure she would weigh more than 159 pounds in the image to the right, which would classify her as "overweight"

There's nothing about these bodies that are unrealistic, also good job missing all of the male characters, definitely not pedalling some kind of feminist agenda there
I'd still bang a couple of the "redesigned" chicks.
Despite what some of these groups may have you believe, there are actually extremely fit girls out there in real life that are really thin.
It literally comes down to body mass index. Fat is not a substitute for lean muscle.
Stop kidding yourselves.
Actually it's been proven BMI doesn't mean jack -- a 5'10 200 lbs bodybuilder VS a 5'10 200 lbs regular average joe have the exact same BMI, but vastly different compositions in their body structure.
You might be thinking of FFMI(Fat Free Mass Index) which is a better indicator of your general body health & such.
Problem is, realistic changes or not, they don't translate well to stylised unrealistic drawings where proportions are naturally adjusted towards the unrealistic, and even skinny in real life doesn't perfectly transfer to said art.
Well, her reboot design should be a bit more what they want, right?
[img_thumb]http://newimages.mobi/wp-content/uploads/lara-croft-tomb-raider-photograph-6.jpg[/img_thumb]
Looks a hell of a lot more realistic than the older design to me.
It's not a matter of realism, it's a matter of what doesn't "offend" them.
these characters' bodies aren't designed with realism in mind, they're designed with attractiveness and unique features, both of which are necessary for a memorable female video game character. complaining that developers design these characters "unrealistically" is redundant.
I understand this is an article that makes people feel good about themselves, but its arguments are flawed.

You know what they could've done?
Instead of just making them expand out and shit, maybe make them fucking muscular, or show that the fat supports a lot of muscle.
Fat doesn't meant out of shape but there are specific ways inwhich you can tell the different between someone who just has flab and some who has fat support the muscle.
These are all piss week, short work ordered done and actually show no reason for the fat's existence other than fucking fat.
The only characters they redesigned that had unrealistic features are Lara Croft (Which has already been made more realistic. The version they made is borderline overweight.) And Nabooru, who isn't even trying to be a real human(Fucking obviously). Sonya and Jades tits should be smaller but you'd probably assume someone who fights to the death for a living would be pretty fucking fit.
Helenas proportions are basically perfect in the original pic.
I'd be pissed if somebody redesigned one of my characters just to fit their stupid fucking agenda.

Athletic does mean being as thin as possible for the purposes of mobility. Heavy Athletics associated with weights and power are not included in this because the purpose there is power and strength, not mobility, hence you get bulky athletes. You will never find a professionally competitive athletes with more than 5-6% of body fat (for men, for women the number is higher of course)
well it sure is a good thing video games aren't even real
Can't wait for them to do men. I wanna see master chief with man tits and a beer gut.
Oh wait. Thatll never happen.
According to these people I am unrealistic because I have a thin waist. Bugger off.
I see way more people who represent an "unrealistic standard" on the street than people similar to the photoshops they did.
This whole thing seems less about having a healthy body weight and more about thin-shaming.
A lot of these redesigned characters aren't "realistic", they're just obese.
why do these people automatically think that "realistic" means "heavier"
If video game creators are going to pride themselves on accurate digital representations, then it’s time for them to get real about women.
literally the second image is of a holographic a.i lol
these types of people must think that any person that is a gender represents their whole gender irl and the person who came up with the design must think that they think all women are like this

Because those people can't stand it if other people are at a healthy weight, it seems.
So instead of getting off their asses and getting fit, they are going to complain on the internet about it.
The Tifa redesign is pretty nice. Digging it more than the original.
Oh good now I don't have to have nightmares because a character in a video game looked skinny.
Outside of Tifa who looks about right, most of the others range from slightly obese (which is ok) to just straight up overweight in my eyes. The worst offenders being Sonya Blade and the other FF girl, i mean holy fuck the ultra skinny extreme is not right but the polar opposite isn't either.
Considering Tifa punches the fuck out of everything and can suplex anything I'm a little more inclined to go with the design that looks like she's a fighter. Needed actual muscle though.
But, out of all of these edits that's the most understandable one.
I like that they conveniently ignored the 2013 Lara which DOES have more realistic proportions, yet still keeps her (appropriately) in very fit shape.
Also ignored that Christie is modeled on and after a real person with direct scanning.
Because no one cares about male aesthetic.
This is primarily because Bulimia patients are mostly female.

Read the article:
With realism in mind, we altered some of the most beloved female video game characters with Adobe Photoshop, shaping their bodies into images that represent the average American woman’s measurements.
I don't think all the pictures look good, nor is viewing overweight as "healthy" good, but at least read the article.

Not liking it doesn't mean I didn't read the article.
And the average is going to be pretty damn high when your population includes people over 50.
Yeah but the average American woman's measurement is fucking fat.
definitely not pedalling some kind of feminist agenda there

I'd be pissed if somebody redesigned one of my characters just to fit their stupid fucking agenda.
Yeah, they have an overt agenda, it's trying to people with legitimate eating disorders. Unrealistic standards doesn't mean nobody in the real world has those proportions, it means they don't reflect the average and shouldn't be held as the standard. The point of the images is to show what the 'standard' actually looks like, which in America is, yes, pretty fat. This seems pretty ridiculous on the face of it, but remember that bulimic girls convince themselves that they're obese even when they're dangerously thin- the point is to ram home that videogame characters aren't realistic depictions of women and aren't a reasonable standard to hold yourself to.
I'm all for developers having the creative freedom to depict characters as they like, but body image is a pretty serious issue for young girls and I can appreciate what this site is trying to do.
