Lara Croft gets a "realistic" redesign from eating disorder support group

Why is it assumed that a "real" woman is chubby by default? I personally don't find chub sexy, why are they pushing their crap onto people like that and shame us? Or is this some sort of plan to make the average below average so fat people don't feel as guilty for not doing anything to lose weight?
These same people tell everyone that people shouldn't relate video games to real life then do everything in their power to make video games relate to real life.
I never would've noticed how skinny Lara Croft is without someone pointing it out.

But that's what I was saying in response to the "striving to look like superheroes, not realistic people" comment on the previous page. If your goal is to look like someone unrealistic, you're gonna end up being very disappointed in the end.
But to look like superheroes you have to work out, not starve yourself. I don't get it.

...I don't see the issue?? Nobody is really striving to look exactly like a stylistic character from a comic book, and if you're healthy you'll feel good about yourself. Having goals is always good, and if you start working out, you'll understand what's realistic in the months and years it takes you to reach them.
It's like yelling at Arnold Schwarzenegger to stop being motivational. If you want that body...good on you, but still huge amounts of people use him as inspiration and certainly don't want to look like the hulk.

I'm never said anyone is striving to look like a superhero, I'm just saying it's not a good idea as suggested, especially for females.
For a moment I thought you were talking about how he looks in recent years. Anyways, that's a good thing.

Sort of vaguely relevant: I don't know much about this issue, but talking to women makes me realize that a lot of frustration must come about in the way they attack the issue. Some think that running and dieting is enough to get the body they want. Aka a calorie deficit. You need to work out, literally lift or do bodyweight exercises, to get those bodies. I imagine a lot of frustration comes about when they lose weight and lose weight and still don't have what they want.
Unrelated to above: these edits are stupid for a thousand reasons.
I honestly don't buy into this body positivity crap for a second because I'm a living success story of someone who went from one to the other (this is in exception for genetic circumstances and stuff.) I weighed about 280 pounds at the start of this year and you know what? I decided I didn't like looking like that, instead I decided to do something about it. I started doing boxing training regimens and eating healthy off of just one decision, I may be more lax now but the scale doesn't lie, I'm down to 212 as of the other day. You can't get mad about other people being skinny if you never actually made a conscious effort to improve yourself, I've had friends call me lucky for my weight and honestly that makes me angrier than anything because I busted my ass to get where I am and couldn't be prouder. Nobody deserves to be made fun of for their weight, but they do deserve to be called out on their shit if they attack other people for being skinnier than they are, or act like there's nothing they can do about it.
you did good, but now imagine having 2 full time jobs and trying to do that

I was working full time while I was doing it, it was a shitty retail job I literally had to quit before it made me off myself because I couldn't take it anymore. I also lost my childhood home and lost family members. I appreciate the compliment but don't act like you understand my circumstances or my depression which I'm STILL fighting.
Because superheroes are anything but realistic. They are super and heroes.
I would say - aim high. Better have unreachable role models than considering obession the end goal. We should all strive to be beautiful, fit, intelligent and mentally stable. I don't see anything bad about super heroes being cool.
Tl;Dr would rather have unrealistically cool role models than average and overweight role models. If you aim high you will reach high, if you aim low you will succumb to comfort and go nowhere
Yes, but the problem is that aiming high sometimes results in horrible mental illnesses like anorexia where girls do horrible things to their body.
You should try and see the motivations behind these redesigns, the ones where they're shown as obese people is overboard but ones like the Tifa ones are appropriate to show that women don't have to be super skinny to please someone. Anorexia is just an obsession with wanting to be thin that results in unhealthy habits (like binging and purging and insane weight loss.) Like any mental illness, getting the logic through to them that what they're doing is bad (I have obsessive compulsive disorder, I did a lot of silly things when I was at my worst and I knew they were silly but they made too much sense at the time) is hard but people try to use tools like this to make it easier to try and get the point to people who suffer from these illnesses so that they can go back to having a healthy lifestyle. They aren't calling for these characters to be changed, or for comic book makers or game makers to stop using skinny girls or buff guys, they're just trying to create support material.
[editline]24th July 2015[/editline]
You have to see the motive behind making these rather than the end product, the end product may seem stupid but if you dig a little and try and see the entire purpose (That they were made for girls who suffer from anorexia and not for someone like you to change their standards of what is acceptable or not) it starts to show a good meaning.

I think we need to ask ourselves a question: "How many of these expectations are unhealthy expectations?".
I can think of a few models that are too skinny to enjoy looking at, but...I feel for the most part, most of western society's physical "role models" are pretty healthy, athletic bodies. That said, I don't watch cable TV, I don't read magazines, and I'm not a woman. Unrealistic expectations and unhealthy expectations are two different things.
Really I'm just realizing, the more I read about this, how large of a book you could write about this.
The "unrealistic expectations in women" thing is something I noticed when I was in middle school all the way to high school since teenage girls would still be looking at magazines and at TV and think that being abnormally thin was the only way to be pretty, but then they matured up and by the time people hit college the issue dwindled down to only a handful of people with actual mental problems who required psychological help.
The entire problem with unrealistic standards is that it hits dumb impressionable teens who poorly pick or poorly understand their role models and get obsessive over it, but once people mature up, the issue tends to go away on its own unless they were overly sheltered in some way.
Err, I can understand that for becoming fit, but for being more attractive? Nobody can change their general appearance without the aid of plastic surgery (which usually ends up in disaster).

I mean if [sp]Batman[/sp] hadn't been as strong the whole of Arkham Knight wouldn't have existed, so there's a pretty good one.

Arnie is overall an inspiration to all while also being unrealistic to most. I know that chances for me to be as fit or successful as Arnie are near zero but that does not stop me from looking up to him as a way to motivate myself to get better. Overall nobody is fussed over unrealistic men while unrealistic women is such a crime for some reason. People need to realize that most of us are mediocre and work to better ourselves, not feel offended over "unrealistic standards". I've never actually seen unrealistic bodies to be a standard.
I'm sorry but a chubby Lara is not realistic. It's not even average(I guess it depends on location). The thing is, average realistic people wouldn't be able to do what Lara does anyway, hence why her body is different. An average person is quite unfit and runs out of stamina easily due to our mostly sedentary lifestyles.
I personally do not want to watch or play a superhero related media where superheroes have average bodies. That's kinda boring. I don't want my fantasy media to be 1:1 real life. Batman with no muscle and beer belly would work for a silly spinoff but that's not who Batman really is. A chubby Superwoman would be laughable. What's next, between missions Lara goes to MCD and downs a double cheeseburger?
I'm seeing this tumblr mentality enter real life more and more and it starts to sadden me. Instead of improving we try to lower the "standards". That's wrong and very passive and lazy. I guess if everyone's fat then no one's fat.

You wouldn't believe how much your face changes when you become fit. It's a massive change really.
You wouldn't believe how much your face changes when you become fit. It's a massive change really.
Even if it doesn't, the confidence and muscle curves will be more than enough to offset an ugly face.

Look at Chris Pratt. Now he wasn't an ugly motherfucker in P&R, but once he started shedding, holy hell did his face change.
I am what can be considered, Obese. I'm 250 pounds, of with a majority of that being fat (60% according to my most recent BMI test), at the age of 14. I'm trying to lose weight, but it's hard.
And I hate this thread.
I hate the subject of this thread. It's patronizing as hell.
More importantly though, I hate the people in this thread. From what has been posted in this thread, the majority of you are the kind that goes "Oh, I don't fat shame, but I see those people as different. As unhealthy. As sickly even" Fuck you. Even you don't actively go out and tell a fat person "You're fat, go kill yourself", the effect you have by making that comment is pretty much the fucking same, even if as to a lesser potency.
And don't even give me that bullshit about "But I only am talking about the people who don't try to lose wait." I'm sure as hell that if you and me were to meet in public with you having no knowledge about me whatsoever, you would judge me the same as someone who isn't trying to lose weight. Even if you don't(and you do), it wouldn't matter anyways because from where I'm standing all it looks like is you trying to justify you judging others harshly on how they look by adding that little comment.
You don't get it do you? Any form of Fat-shaming, from judgmental mild to inflammatory hot doesn't actually fucking help us at all. All it does is make us feel like shit. Hell, it can even drive us back to what made us obese, such as food itself or in my case video games(I had a huge lack of exercise from playing them so much).
Fat people don't want to be treated any differently than you. We don't want to be deprecated. We don't want to be shamed and insulted into a lower class than you. And we sure as hell don't want to be uplifted any higher than you, because that just doesn't feel genuine. We want to be the same as you, and come to our own terms on beating Obesity. We do not want to be shamed in anyway.
So please, think about that the next time you go "Oh I don't hate fat people, but they are soooo different than us."

I Was 270 lbs in 2012. I'm 180 now.

It sort of is listed as a health problem with documented medical afflictions associated with it. You have to face the fact that it -is- unhealthy, and make that your fuel for losing weight.

One of my best friends was over 300 lbs, before he even started to think of going on a diet. I never thought low of him, but I was concerned for his health. Y'know why? Because I'm a good- No, actually, because I'm a normal human being with basic compassion for other people.

Of course it does. You lose that double chin and puffy cheeks and instead gain some definition. It's the same for women. I've personally seen two women who lost significant weight and the changes to their facial structure are unbelievable.

To me this really only sounds like you're trying to justify why your attempts at losing weight haven't been met with any success yet, so instead of putting the blame on yourself you put the blame on others.
If a simple discussion about the topic "Being obese is unhealthy" is already enough to make you feel like shit and keep you from losing weight, then I doubt anyone can help you.

Losing weight at 14 is not hard, I am 15 and I have been doing great, at least with my actual conditions that affect my life, such as a sleep disorder where my sleep patterns go around the clock, so I can't go to the gym every day every week, but if I could, I fucking would, and even with my disorder, I still go to the gym for an hour 3 times a week, sometimes more.
I will NEVER accept people being Fat, I don't have Fat people, I hate the lifestyle, I would rather die than accept the lifestyle, heck, I'd rather die than be fat.
Fat is unhealthy, Fat is sick, Fat is the worst.
You gotta try harder, lower the games, get more healthy, it's extremely easy. Get a Gym membership like I did, get a trainer to give you a list on stuff to do for how long and how heavy.
[editline]25th July 2015[/editline]
Stop trying to justify your weight.
Being fat is never good, or healthy, and never will be good, or healthy.
[editline]25th July 2015[/editline]
Sorry if I come off harsh but that is reality, before being able to move on and get going, you need to face the harshness of reality.
Hell, if you're too shy or insecure you can "pregame" at home. Buy a weight lifting set and work at home first. For many people this raises confidence enough that they eventually switch to a gym. Look up guides for starters and how to diet properly. Making up excuses and blaming others is easy. Exercising is work, and if you want results you gotta work hard. In life nothing happens if all you do is blame and hate.
