I got pulled over (and yes I am from texas) due to failure to use my turn signal and this fuckn cop made me get out of my car and stand and wait for almost 10min before giving me just a warning. I was going to right a complaint but I had a friend (minor) who was wasted and luckily the cop didn't ask him any questions. Still I have to agree, cops here can be harsh, but 9 times? Sorry buddy but that's 9 times too many
Not really rehab, but if he was forced to take it after each time he should have learned his lesson.
There's your fucking problem. If the programme is useless then why just settle?
So are you saying arrest all Nihilists because they don't care about anything? What about solopsists? You can't just lock people away for their fucking views on life. This guy may have been an alcoholic, and a drunk driver, but he is not less than human, and does not deserve less than human treatment. This guy should be forced to go through rehab, permanently have his license revoked, and possibly put under house arrest.
No I'm saying he obivously dosen't give a shit about how many times he does it or that he could kill someone while he's driving under the influence. It's this neglect for human life that condems this man and why he deserves life in prison.
There's your fucking problem. If the programme is useless then why just settle?
So it makes me a sociopath that I don't want people who can't get their shit together enough that they get arrested 9 times for driving while drunk? I happen to know people who've died because of drunk assholes driving. It's his fucking fault. I don't agree with his sentence but he should have stopped the first time so I don't feel one ounce of sorriness for this lowlife.
Oh and prison is less-than-human treatment? That's why we send everyone who gets sentanced to prison there. Right.
[editline]10:59PM[/editline]
broke mah automerge

You're a sociopath for skipping over the possibility of Rehabilitation.
and no one died in this case.

After 9 times it's amazing he hasn't killed anyone yet.

ok? chalk it up to a miracle, he didn't
You're a sociopath for skipping over the possibility of Rehabilitation.

Are you blind? Re-read my shit and call me a sociopath again. His sentice is large, I said he needed a few years of prison and fucking Rehab, learn to fucking read.
You're a sociopath for skipping over the possibility of Rehabilitation.
Rehab would have been better. After re-reading the OP it seems he has a "rap sheet" of other crimes too, so that just adds onto this repeat offenders sentence. He'll probably be out in 5 years for good behavior. It would be silly to keep a drunk in prison for life. Should have been sentenced to a few years in jail and rehab me thinks.
Yep he totally skipped that.
Your points seem to be skipping all over the fucking place.

Hush.
The man had several chances to get his life together and he didn't. The world isn't going to stop and pamper him until he lives a life of harmony and bliss; we already have trouble with the six billion people we got.
I love how everyone is like "oh he needs rehab not jail". Listen after the first couple of DWI's I'm sure he was ordered to rehab programs or AAA meetings and got his license revoked etc. but after nine times? Come on I mean some people just don't want to/can't change. Sickness or not he is a danger to other people, the role of the government is to protect their citizens from outside forces, each-other, and themselves so getting him off the street is helping everybody, including himself. Also all this "educate not punish" stuff doesn't really apply. We're not talking about children here we're talking about a grown man, older than most of your fathers. By now he should know better than this, he is a member of society now and needs to act like it. And even if you do consider alcoholism to be a mental or chemical disease we put dangerous, mentally ill people in psychiatric wards all the time so we're this isn't something unusual it's just that the mental disease in question is not common for this situation. Sure some may feel that it's wrong and "fascist" but you know what? A majority of us, the citizens agree with this and if you don't and think we're all terrible people then fine, don't come for a visit. What I am saying with that last sentence is we all have our differences and opinions and we will all disagree somehow but it's their problem and they'll take care of it in their own way.
Also Warhol calling people names and swearing a lot doesn't help you argument, it only serves to make you look ignorant.
If you all want to continue doing this then the whole discussion will collapse into a playground shoving match.

This is what you're required to do after getting a DUI in Texas.
Couldn't they just have taken his lisence for live after the fifth time or so?
I mean, really...
How did this get posted up here, what the hell.
What the fuck is your point. One minute, the guy is an asshole and should go to jail for fucking ever
on the other hand you're saying he NEEDS rehab.
Christ sake, which is it? Do I agree with you or not?

Point out where I said he needs jail forever? Point it out. Get your facts straight before you make yourself look like more of an idiot.
Just life? From a Texas judge? He's lucky he's not getting hanged.

you can't just slap his wrist, tell him to improve and kick his ass out the door.
Alcoholism is a disease. You need to cure diseases. So you send him to proper medical/rehabilitation services. Not a ineffective "stop it!" service.
and for fucks sake, revoke his licence.

I think the point was that he was ordered to have state rehab after having 8 DUI's and jail time is suitable now. Clearly the rehab didn't work.
And that, to me at least looks like plenty of chances/resources to change ones behavior
plenty of chances? slaps on the wrist and no rehab and no action is plenty of chances?

Revoking his license doesn't prohibit him from getting into a car and driving it.
It's nature working it's wonders, when you come to think of it. The weak perish while the smart/strong thrive. I'd like you to find the money and manpower to rehabilitate someone who obviously does not care for the law or the safety of others as well as himself.
The cat only has nine lives. After that it's gone.
So this man gets more time than murderers

Jail: Minimum 72 hours, or 6 days if open container is present.
Texas DWI Fines/Costs: Fine not to exceed $2,000. Other administrative and evaluation fees may be assessed. TX imposes a “surcharge” for a DWI on top of regular fines. The surcharge is $1,000 per year for three years for a first DWI offense and $2,000 if the person’s BAC level was double or more the legal limit (.16). Texas License Suspension: Yes, 1 year. Attending DWI Education class may avoid this. Occupational license may be granted based on need.
Violation of Zero Tolerance Law: N/A
Texas Conditional License: A conditional, or occupational license, may be issued based on "essential need" and usually only when the court orders an offender into alcohol assessment/rehabilitation. Vehicle Impound: None
Texas DWI School: First time offenders must complete a 12 hour DWI Education Program within 180 days of when probation was granted or risk having their license revoked.
Texas Probation: Terms of probation decided by judge or jury.
Texas Community Service: 24 hours required, but no more than 100 hours.
Second Texas DWI Offense Plus:
Texas Criminal Status: Class A Misdemeanor. A 3rd DUI is a 3rd degree felony.

Texas DWI Fines/Costs: Fines not to exceed $4,000. Other administrative and evaluation fees may be assessed. TX imposes a “surcharge” for a DWI on top of regular fines. The surcharge is $1,500 per year for three years for a second DWI offense and $2,000 if the person’s BAC level was double or more the legal limit (.16).
Texas License Suspension: Yes, 180 days to 2 years. Occupational license may be granted based upon need.
Vehicle Impound: None.
Texas DWI School: Repeat offenders must complete a 32 hour DWI Repeat Offender Program.
Texas Probation: Terms of probation decided by judge or jury.
Texas Community Service: Minimum 80 hours, but no more than 200 hours.
so a "DWI Education Program" is going to help someone with their mental illness?
Revoking his license doesn't prohibit him from getting into a car and driving it.

It's nature working it's wonders, when you come to think of it. The weak perish while the smart/strong thrive.
Social Darwinism is a bit of a fucked up. Are you some sort of neo-facist?
I'd like you to find the money and manpower to rehabilitate somehow who obviously does not care for the law or the safety of others and himself.
Norway's Rehabilitation programme takes up most of its prison system, it's working fine and they're not bankrupt. Not only that, the population is really small compared to America, so I think they have less manpower as well.
He has a fucking mental disorder. Do you know what an addiction is?
;24099692']I think the point was that he was ordered to have state rehab after having 8 DUI's and jail time is suitable now. Clearly the rehab didn't work.
The rehab given was not exactly an effective programme that lasted only a little while. A good rehab takes months to years.
[editline]04:31AM[/editline]
quote
Again, it's a slap on the wrist with an ineffective rehab programme
