I said clear as day that he needs rehab and jail time twice in my first three posts. I also said I don't feel sorry for him because he let himself do this 9 times. How is that all over the place? Suck it up? Since when was defending myself sucking up? You have yet to post a valid reason why I'm a sociopath. Your girlfriend agrees with me. Is she a sociopath too?

Has everyone just kind of skipped over the fact that he's in jail for a DUI and not being an alcoholic? You shouldn't be punished for having an addiction, but you should for doing something illegal that's a choice. He could have easily stayed at home and drank and no one would have cared, but he had to use terrible judgment and make an awful choice and go out and drive, and get caught doing it 9 times. That is clearly his own fault, and a failure on his part, illness or no illness.
Aside, life is still excessive, and he needs proper rehab. He just also needs to be taken to account for his bad choices.

OVB, do we agree the guy needs and needed rehab?

Again, you're blaming a guy with a disease for having a disease.

Cover up their sonny. Your superiority complex is showing.
Again, you're blaming a guy with a disease for having a disease.
How is driving while drunk a disease? Driving is not an unavoidable thing, it's not something you can't choose to do. He can't choose to drink, he can choose not to drive, and he should be punished for that choice. He's not drunk in a different way than everyone else, so he should be punished like any one else (or moreso for the 9th time). He needs rehab, but rehab alone wouldn't make up for what he did or fix his judgment.
Again, you're blaming a guy with a disease for having a disease.
Choosing to drive drunk is not a disease. It's a poor decision. I don't care if he abuses alcohol at home. But as soon as someone abuses alcohol while using something that could potentially harm someones life is a different story.

You're blaming a guy with disease for having a disease, he can't help the posts! :downs:
Again, you're blaming a guy with a disease for having a disease.
Actually his post was blaming a guy with a disease for doing something, not being something. Being an alcoholic is not against the law, driving while under the influence of said alcohol is.
Whether or not the man was an alcoholic, he still got behind the wheel while intoxicated multiple times, making that choice each time. The courts gave him a slap on the wrist each time, and he continued to commit the crime.
Would the man not have climbed into his vehicle drunk had he taken rehabilitation courses? Nobody can say that for sure.
The central point is that the man knew his behavior was illegal and potentially deadly, yet continued to do it anyways.
[editline]d[/editline]
At some point in this man's life, a judge had to notice a fucking pattern here. 9 times? For fuck's sake. This trial must have been that point. I agree, life is a little harsh, but a sentence was definitely needed.
Choosing to drive drunk is not a disease. It's a poor decision. I don't care if he abuses alcohol at home. But as soon as someone abuses alcohol while using something that could potentially harm someones life is a different story.
Serious question, Have you ever been drunk?
Yes, it is their decision, but its also an addiction, so the state should order the guy for proper rehab after like the 3rd DUI

Yes, they should have, and that's a failing of the system. But this is also a failing of the man himself, and it's something that should be appropriately punished. Not life, but not just rehab
Also:
The central point is that the man knew his behavior was illegal and potentially deadly, yet continued to do it anyways.
This is a great point. He wasn't drunk 24/7, and I doubt he was always blackout drunk when he drove, and he had gone to court over this 8 times (while hopefully sober). Somewhere in this non-drunk time, you think he would realize "I'm a major fuckup and this is a huge problem" and either find a way to prevent himself from driving, or get a friend to watch him and keep him from driving. He didn't, and he should be punished for that.
And how is this contributing to this conversation?
Good. He hasn't learned, so lock him up. I'm surprised he hasn't killed anyone.

Everytime I've gotten near to being drunk I've cut myself off. Never been in that situation.
Yes, they should have, and that's a failing of the system. But this is also a failing of the man himself, and it's something that should be appropriately punished. Not life, but not just rehab
The man needs punishment, yes, but he also needs Rehab. The system failed is what I'm arguing.

Many, many, many people have issues with fixing the problems they know they have. Not everyone can work on their own.

So basically, if a man screws up, it's never his fault, because hey, he's only human and couldn't help himself.
Everytime I've gotten near to being drunk I've cut myself off. Never been in that situation.
I have been a quite a few times. When you're drunk, you lose your touch with reality. So being intoxicated, while a dumb decision in this case, the guy had problems determining his reality. So yes, it's totally his fault, but Rehab takes that and tries to fix the beginning problem. Just sending him to prison, only punishes the reaction.

Well we agree then, I think it failed as well. Despite living here, I don't have a familiarity with our court and jail system (thankfully), but i've heard nothing but bad things about it. It needs a lot of work and I'm not sure how it'll get it...
And whether he had problems fixing it, or never tried, is all speculation so it doesn't make much of a difference.

I agree, the guy SHOULD have fixed his problem, but he didn't
so logically, you help him. Which is the purpose OF the state.

The system didn't fail, you failed. If you get caught with a DUI in Texas, you have to take mandatory alcohol classes. Every time. So what, that's 15+ (court could have fined more for his 3rd and up offenses) years for this loser to fix his habit? Not including his other convictions. Yup, life it is.

The alcohol classes are 32 hours. Rehab is several months.
