But the F-22 is specifically air superiority, and the F-35 is a multi-role fighter.
Fuck you F-16s MRF master race
Honestly they should just build new versions of the current aircraft. I can't see how a jack of all trades plane is better than one plane specific to its job. Might as well cram a warp drive and rockets on that thing and go to the next galaxy over for a beer.
Fuck you F-16s MRF master race
F-16 is scrub-level MRF, A-10 is god-emperor of planekind. What's that, you say? It's not a multi-role fighter? That's only because being so damn good and using it against other planes would just be unfair. Imagine how a MiG-29 would look after being BRRRT'd by 30mm? Not pretty.
I can't see how a jack of all trades plane is better than one plane specific to its job.
You only have to send people and train them for one plane each, instead of 2, 3, 4 planes, I guess.
You only have to send people and train them for one plane each, instead of 2, 3, 4 planes, I guess.
Except there was gonna be three different F-35s anyway.
Nearly $400 billion.
That's about $1260 per US citizen.
Can you imagine what would happen if the government had given everyone $1260 instead of blowing it all on this shit?
"oh cool, I can finally get that laptop I wanted", followed by a noticeable increase in gas prices trying to siphon off some of that pocketchange

Good luck shooting down a plane that's much faster and more maneuverable than yours

A-10 is only slow because it doesn't have to be in a hurry to get the job done, and do it better than the others.
A-10 is only slow because it doesn't have to be in a hurry to get the job done, and do it better than the others.
That's cool! So I can clap towards the A-10, say "chop-chop!" and it will catch up to an F16?
That's cool! So I can clap towards the A-10, say "chop-chop!" and it will catch up to an F16?
No, you're not the boss of A-10. A-10 does whatever the fuck pleases A-10. Mostly fucking shit up left, right and center.
But yeah, F15s are perfectly good as far as multirole fighters goes. Just print out a handful of those and be done with it. Planes doesn't have to be replaced every 30 years, just look at the B52, serving since 1955 and still best in it's class.
You may notice the B-52 is no longer used in any scenario where it could conceivably come under fire. It's a flying truck with an 'open bay doors' button, it doesn't exactly need to stay state-of-the-art. And even then it's being relegated to a secondary role as smart munitions deployed by F-15s and F-16s can take out a target (like a bunker) just as surely as a B-52 bathing the entire valley in explosives.
An air superiority craft on the other hand kinda has to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to observability and electronic warfare. Upgrading the former on an older aircraft is all but impossible, and upgrading the latter can cost almost as much as a new plane.
Maybe instead of developing one specific jet, they should see about developing improved technologies independently of eachother, and then when the time comes where they actually need a new jet, slap all that tech on a set of wings like some sorta ready-made McDonalds burger of airborne death.
F-16s, developed for air superiority, are being used to deliver bombs in the Middle East. It's a serious waste of resources to develop four aircraft for separate roles that don't always exist concurrently. If you want to slash budgets, reducing the number of aircraft and combat pilots needed to maintain operational readiness is the way to go. But from an engineering standpoint, you can't just slap a plane together and expect it to be a low-radar-profile fighting machine. It just doesn't work.
No, you're not the boss of A-10. A-10 does whatever the fuck pleases A-10. Mostly fucking shit up left, right and center.
No, just center because you cant see shit out of that cockpit

the A-10 doesn't play by the rules bro.
There doesn't need to be a good field of view by the pilot. The A-10 flies its self. Much like a mustang roaming on the midwest plains. You can't tame that horse, no rider will control her.

More like a mustang getting shot and eaten by an Asian man
the Asian man in this case being a fighter plane which could easily take down an A-10, especially if we assume that your statement is true, which would make the fighter plane sentient and able to fly on its own command

Good thing we're not fighting an Asian man right now.

actually every plane that gets within firing distance of an A-10 explodes
little-known fact because most witnesses were flying said planes and therefore also exploded
It's not even that great of an war machine. The best, hardest to pin down fighter craft in the world is still just a 200 million dollar feeble piece of tin foil on the runway. The list of things that time and money could have been better spent on is practically unlimited in length.
actually every plane that gets within firing distance of an A-10 explodes

Fatal flaw in this statement: the pilot of the A-10 is closer than firing range to his craft; how did he not explode?
Likewise, what about when the A10 is parked in the hangar near other planes? They don't explode!
:Bill: You can't explain that!

Also, I just realized that the money for this project could have been spent on rebooting the SR71 program >:O

The B-52 is also projected to continue service until 2040 last I heard, so it will have served for nearly 90 years. Mostly due to how upgradeable it is, but for the most part we have other aircraft that can do its job comparatively well (B-2, for instance).
The B-52 is also less stressed than a Multi-role fighter jet. :v:
Aren't they not able to make A-10s anymore?
Aren't they not able to make A-10s anymore?
We haven't made a single new A-10 since 1984 dude.
Slap a deadline on it, and tell them they'll need to pay all of that money back if they don't fucking deliver it as promised. If that happened, I can assure you Lockheed-Martin will cough up the F-35 and there will be no more budget increases. Nobody wants to pay back that chunk of change, especially not a corporation that's in direct competition with other companies that do everything they do just as good.
We've pissed away too much money on this, so totally cancelling it doesn't seem like a good idea. I'd much rather they hold somebody accountable for jerking around multiple NATO air forces for the better part of a decade.
Naw man, they'd just file bankruptcy and the government would bail them out.
