What's next, they're going to patent the word patent, so that every patent discussion about them patenting shit they shouldn't patent will get them money out of patent lawsuits because of copyright for said patented word?
They can patent tablets with a 4:3 screen if they want to, but this just doesn't make any sense.
don't hate the player people, hate the game
there wouldn't be any patent abuse if patents weren't abusable
I've said this before and I'll say it again.
I hate both, since it's disgusting that someone is taking advantage of something they shouldn't.
But it's also disgusting that it's possible to get away with such thing in the first place.
"don't hate the player, hate the game" in this situation sounds like something coming STRAIGHT from the mouth of lawyers who just got a fat bonus for once more assisting in abusing a broken system instead of helping to close the hole and preventing it from happening again.
Just because it's legally correct doesn't mean it's morally or ethically correct, and in this case, it's all about achieving power and money through dirty tricks.
I don't see how they can get this, even for just tablets. It's not novel, nor is it inventive. Making rectangular tablets itself is obvious, and rounding the corners is obvious as well, for safety and aesthetics.
Look, a rounded rectangle on a tablet from 1993 Star Trek!

Dumb knee-jerk. Have any of you guys even read the actual patent? It covers the ornamental design of the iPad.
Actually, even the article says this:
Legal experts have, however, argued that its uncertain whether this new patent would be of any use to the company in court.
Lea Shaver, Associate Professor at Indiana University's McKinney School of Law, told Wired: 'This design patent gives Apple no new advantage, because no one is out there trying to market an iPad lookalike.'
That's the basic design element I'd expect of from any phone or tablet... rounded corners for aesthetics and comfort (in hand/pocket, so it doesn't jab you).
I just hope one day the apple fad will be over. Oh how I long to see that day.
I'm gonna patent straight lines and sue the fuck out of Apple.
You can regonise apple products virtually instantly from their shape, this is why they patent the designs so that someone doesnt bring out a product with exactly the same dimensions as the iphone/ipad and ruin their recognisability.
This is one of the problems with a minimalist design.
So this April fools joke:

Wasn't actually too far from the mark...
You'd lose. Don't matter if you did it first unless you also patented it
Prior art is grounds to sue them for the validity of the patent.

Honestly, they just "copied/borrowed" Dieter Rams design style.
And yet they have the balls to accuse others of the same.
Truly amazing technology. You Fandroids just don't know what real innovation is, to the point where you actually invented time travel just to rip Apple off.
I bet those Google Glasses are an Apple rip off too.

when the average consumer thinks sleek, white and modern isn't trendy anymore
which is never
So did they patent rectangles or just rounded corner ones
would someone be able to make a sharp-cornered phone and include these 4 little rounded rubber corner pads in a separate package that attach to said corners and get away with it because it is an accessory~
brb patenting rounded rubber corner pads

Serious or stupid? you decide.

Joking.

If the system didn't allow people to take advantage of it then people wouldn't continually take advantage of it. Apple's not the only company that patent trolls.
So yes, don't hate the player, hate the game.
Read the article, patent, and opinions and you'll see this isn't actually a big deal, you'd need to copy the drain of the iPad with almost perfect precise measurements for the patents to even apply, and even then it's doubtful it'll actually help in court. You guys are blowing this way out of proportion.

As usual.
People should stop getting upset at Apple and start blaming the lawmakers, laws, and regulations that enable Apple and other companies do stupid shit like this. Patent laws are absolutely necessary and Apple isn't really doing anything wrong, it's the system that is setup that in order for companies to cover their asses.

Theoretically.
Don't forget all of Apple's lawsuits and product banning over bullshit.
patent the patent system and sue apple for all the patents they own

So if someone sees a silhouette of a rectangle, one would immediately think "iPod/iPhone!" No, I don't think so. Patenting shapes for crying out loud shouldn't be possile.

Corporations are assholes. The world isn't perfect. Instead of blaming corporations for being corporations and strongarming people for no good reason, take away their ability to strongarm people.
Hehehehe

1.Make new knockoff iPad.
2.Round off all corners but one.
3.Make the last corner sharp.
4.Scratch the cars of ipad owners with the sharp corner on it.

"there wouldn't be any murders if people weren't so murderable"
"there wouldn't be any candy stolen if it wasn't so delicious"
Screw that, I'll hate the player and the game.
also I doubt they're ACTUALLY patenting that hardcore, I'm thinking it's more of the specific ipad design.

lmao comparing murder and thievery to patent abuse
the former 2 are already illegal
lmao comparing murder and thievery to patent abuse

you're taking metaphorical far too literally and completely missing the point rofl
what if I said murder and theft was also legal? Is it ok to steal candy just because it's easy to do and it's a big game? It's obviously wrong that they're legal but it's still wrong to do them in the first place, just like patent trolling.
