Railroad is saying the signals were working so that means the float went through the gates and signals as they were active
No offense to anyone, but how fucking dumb do you have to be to cross the rails with a parade float when the signal tells you not to? The first thing my driving instructor taught me is to slow down and look twice at railroad crossings even if the signal says all's clear, because if you fuck up there, you're mincemeat, no matter what

But we don't know the full details. For all we know, the float could have stalled on the tracks. If it was intentional, then yeah they are at fault. Just wait, we will see.

The axles alone on freight cars can weight more than your entire vehicle, and some trains have nearly a thousand of them. This isn't factoring in cargo, or the weight of the cars themselves, or anything else. When something that literally weighs 10,000 times what your vehicle weighs hits it any speed above a snails pace, guess which one wins. It sure as hell isn't your vehicle. There is no reason beyond physical disability to stay on a train crossing.
"life comes at you fast" huh
Nationwide is on Pakistan's side.

This is tragic and all, but somewhere down the line someone made a long string of very stupid decisions.
Yeah, if this happend they either cross illegally or stalled, and if they stalled they would've jumped off the thing and left. So I'm willing to bet they were crossing illegally.
Engineers are required to blast the horn several times before coming to a crossing. It's not like the float couldn't know it was coming. That's why they're constantly blasting the horn whenever you see one.
By the time the poles come down they're "trapped". Seeing as they are wounded vets some of them might not be able to get off by the time the train crashes into the float. The noise around them from the parade itself could have drowned out the noise of the horn. If a fire engine was in the parade the horn may have sounded similar and went unnoticed. The only ones truly at fault were the people scheduling and mapping the parade itself. If you plan to slowly cross a railroad intersection you should check the schedule for incoming trains.
