Google Research timeline shows the rise and fall of music genres since the 1950s

Poor jazz.
Metal looks like its dying/dwindling/whatever.
BRB creating a song named qwasd so i can be the first man to make goapel music.
No Classical music. :c
No Classical music. :c
That's because
People usually think of classical music in terms of its composition date, not its recording date — should a particular concerto recording be dated when Mozart wrote it in 1791, or when the Boston Symphony Orchestra performed it in 2009? Because of this difference, placing classical music on the timeline the same way as contemporary music looks counterintuitive, so it is omitted from this visualization.

I couldn't find any info on my favorite genre.
Doom funeral symphonic industrial gothic metal.
where the fuck is my deathcore pornogrind
Looks like Indie is going down and HipHop/Rap are going up. Would hate for my favorite genre of music to die out like Jazz did.
Children of Bodom is listed under Black/Death Metal?
Am I missing something?
Like already said they are Melodic Death Metal, what do you think they are? Of course they would be under Death Metal.
metal subgenres are a real bitch to deal with
I don't know why you keep saying this man, metal sub genres are insanely easy to understand like yeah there are some people that go like fucken overboard and name their stuff something like majestic symphonic epic metal or some shit but besides those that bands make up to label their music, sub genre naming is pretty straight forward.
Also I think they should of used something else besides what's uploaded to Google Play Music, the Metal one seems off.

That's because they're Death Metal.
Aww, Sublime didn't make it in to the Reggae/Ska chart. Glad to see Pepper and Slightly Stoopid there.
Holy fuck jazz was huge
Jazz started a massive revolution of sound. Jazz was not only huge, but it really changed a lot.
also, fun fact; the beatles is what helped make metal
The only problem with this is it has trouble recognizing bands like Pink Floyd who've had other groups do covers.
And also Google Play's library is small as fuck.
Just as I was writing on essay on oral traditions, this will come in really handy!
Songs were definitely not the first thing I thought about when I read this phrase.
I think this is goapel

Philistine.
It's fun to find your favourite band
(also two compilations come before one of Muse's six albums for some reason, one of which never was released physically)
Proof that rock isn't dead
Finally, visual proof that disco is dead, and apparently never existed. We can all leave that burden of humanity behind us now.
I like that Electronic is rising but I'm saddened that Metal is falling.
techno is ded :c
There's just so many Electronic subgenres today that some just get ignored.
Woah: Bon Jovi, Linkin Park, Korn, Led Zeppelin, hell I think I've even seen Greenday listed as metal. Seems a bit off.

Dude, Led Zeppelin are like the fathers of Heavy Metal
Holy fuck jazz was huge
That's really fucking interesting actually! How one genre of music back then seemed to dominate at a time, then everything sort of evened out!
It makes me wonder if it's due to our data, or if it's because of cultural changes.
Maybe it's due to communication, where everyone can easily find any genre of music, rather than relying on mass media to get it out there. And if this is the case, then has that happened with other media and aspects of culture?
That's something I'd love to know.

4:20-5:12 and 8:00 until the end are very 'metal' bits
Am I the only one questioning the accuracy of this?
Here's a few things to think about:
1. Google Play cannot overshadow iTunes, Youtube, and pirating combined which make up a pretty big chunk of modern music listening. The data therefore is more affected by extreme highs and lows.
2.Google Play does not have a massive range of music compared to other places.
3. It can only tell what music from what time people are listening to now. They can normalize statistics, but it still cannot compensate fully for not gathering the data when it occurred. Along with that a lot of people who were alive for the older genres are usually more prone to listen on Vinyl or CD.
4. A lot of artists don't really seem to be under very accurate genres. Genre naming is usually tough though.
Feel free to refute my points. I'm not a statistics expert, but these are some things that popped into my head after reading their "About" page.
I don't see how country is that small, honestly. Or how disco is literally nonexistant. Is it counted with rock for some reason?

Found disco, it's in R&B/Soul.

I sort of agree, especially on the 4th. I've been using GP All Access for quite some time now. One thing I've noticed is that its not exactly good at genres. Especially when it comes to Electronic, since many singles and albums that do exist, are just labled generically as "Dance/Electronic" despite them actually having genres for "House" or "Trance". This makes it hard to find anything using the "Explore" feature without knowing the exact name since a lot of music can only be found with searches apparently. I'm sure other root genres are just as affected (like those of you who mentioned metal). Which could sort of skew results.
Just an observation.
I was depressed when I saw how little Supertramp was.
Well, at least they included the 60's/70's revival rock groups!
It's quite ironic how large "alternative" is.
Part of that is because in this case, they decided it includes things like punk and other genres that could fit into some of the other categories (mostly rock).
Finally, visual proof that disco is dead, and apparently never existed. We can all leave that burden of humanity behind us now.
But I like disco.
We live in the greatest age of music. The diversity is simply glorious.

Until you actually turn on a radio and actually listen to the music. Shitty rap, corporate country, awful pop songs all following the same damn formulas, and not a jazz in sight.
