The only casualties Israel got was from the first fires that came from the Lebanese soldiers, allegedly they were from snipers. So those soldiers did this in order to stay alive, had they done something else they might have put themselves at more risk.

If it was retreat - they would've retreated (and obviously covered by fire launched on the snipers), if it was staying there and waiting for the snipers to be taken out (which is, uh, the most logical decision) - they would've done that (and they did). Some soldiers saying "habla habla our land our land" isn't going to stop anyone sensible from using their sovereignty on their land. This wasn't expected. In case it was, the IDF would've obviously acted otherwise. It was a complete surprise. Aaaaaaaand I'm done here.

Is it really worth arguing about? Borders are tricky things, there isn't actually a line on dirt to say who has authority where. I'm sure if you ask most people where the border is they will point to the wall, not a hundred meters in front of it where the actual border is. Although, one question that has to be asked, is if a Battalion commander was killed, and a Company commander was wounded, how many Israeli soldiers were over the wall? If there was an entire company of IDF troops on the other side of the wall, that could be seen as very provocative by the Lebanese border guards, given the very tense situation there currently is at the Israeli-Lebanese border. Basically, there was confusion, and people died. Then the IDF decided to keep shelling a town for some reason...
