• Eugene Kaspersky calls for end to net anonymity
In part, it's because of the nature of the beast: on the internet, no matter how clever any particular company may have been, some smart bugger will come up with a way round it, more often than not purely because it's a challenge for them. To draw an analogy, it'd be like the shitty ID card system they wanted to use in England: sounds great on paper, but can be faked or edited ID in approximately 12 minutes, with easily available tools (I believe it was a simcard reading program from Nokia). Any internet ID system would become a complete farce within, at the maximum, a year or so after it's implementation. The other reason would be that the internet is one of the few places where you can have truly free speech. To you, I'm just a collection of pixels and an assumed name: The only thing you can judge me on is what I write down, and, unless you're more computer literate than the average internet user, you can't track me down. In other words, we can say whatever the hell we like, without fear of repercussions to ourselves. As soon as we add in a compulsory ID however, we lose this. We have to think about who's going to read what we say, who's ire we'll attract, and so on: speaking for myself, I would rather have to deal with the worms, viruses and spyware on occasion, than lose my ability to call Jack Thompson a complete fuckwit without him being able to get a name to litigate with. TL;DR: Idealist gets on soapbox, says words.
Well, it's good to see that there is someone on here that can actually argue for their opinions. And while I don't agree on the free speech issue, you're most likely right about people finding a way around the system.
Imagine everyone everywhere you ever go to immediately knowing your real name and address. Not only that, but police could also at any time find out what products you are buying where, what movies you're watching, etc etc, and they'd know every single place you've ever been to. You surely wouldn't want that in real life. Now you gotta ask yourself a question: Do you want the Internet to be like that? Well, do ya, punk? (no offense meant, it's a reference I hope you get)
Well, police are capable of most of those things in real life anyway, and I'm perfectly fine with that. Even so, I think I'd 'sacrifice' my anonymity if the internet becomes safer (and less clogged with shitposts). And I do get the reference :b
As is the person.
I haven't read much about the guy himself so i didn't feel right to comment
