Crimea was a gift from Kruschev, and now Russia wants it back. They probably don't care about anything else. Crimea is valuable enough on its own
That's not how it works.
Ah yes, "protecting" as always.
Does the US or EU have any interest in Ukraine? If so will this become yet another proxy war?
Bunch of mineral mines, oil fields, some uranium, another ally in europe.
These guys actually do look like marines (naval infantry). The uniform, camo patterns and equipment looks close enough.

These guys are motorized infantry, but the equimpent is the same.
So is Russia BASICALLY invading Ukraine?
No, more like the russian centric half of Ukraine is really not a fan of the Eurocentric one. (the fact that the Eurocentric one (currently in control) already repealed or tried to repeal, a number of language laws guaranteeing russian education isn't helping at all.
What a time we leave in. :buddy:

budapest memorandum was signed in 1994 and it basically is USA guaranteeing ukraine its "territorial independence" and russia also signed saying that they agree not to interfere in Ukraine
this is the reason why russia is still denying that the troops at the airport are theirs, and that they are "unknown persons" while they are obviously wearing russian naval camo
they aren't ready for full out war yet
meanwhile ukraine is so fucking broke that they can't even pay the pensions in March, the ATMs are empty and the hryvnia is inflating like nobody's business so they won't stand up to russia

Wasn't there some leak about the americans breaking the budapest memorandum?
It's just the Russian navy securing a strategic point.
It means they can evacuate pro-Russian people in the event of civil war while also ensuring supplies can still be brought into the country. Not to mention it deters protesters from attempting to seize the airport.
These guys are well organized, this isn't some limp dicked militia. Russian Navy is in the area, and the Russians have done similar in the past. They've pledged to help Crimea, and Ukraine's Interior Minister seems to think these guys are in fact Russian military. There is plenty of evidence supporting those claims.

the russians wiretapped their phones and leaked a phone conversation where the US ambassador was discussing who should replace Yanuk and shit, russia considered that infringement

aaand here we see why the russians occupied the airport and the Air Traffic Control

as the roads are still under ukrainian control, the russians are moving in via air
All of you guys going "this isn't Russia!!!", mind explaining why they're using very recently issued Russian camouflage uniforms and AK74Ms if they are just random mercs??
People suggested they might be militia. I suppose you missed that.
The Militia are supported by some of the local government and might have access to military stores.
Russian camouflage uniforms
You can buy those. Equipment and gear is nothing new. AK74Ms - there're plenty of those all around Crimea in hideouts: during Chechen wars Crimean tatars were more than willing to allow Chechen "freedom fighters" and mercs use their places as hideouts.
There're some reasons to doubt some of the allegations, but then there're BMPs and helicopters there now.

Wow, looks like a part of some war film trailer.
It's starting to look more and more like shit's going to hit the fan.

These might be Ukrainian BTW. These are Mi-24, command of Russian Black Sea fleet has exactly 0 of these at their disposal. Unless 58th Army is getting involved, these can only be Ukrainian.
I am going to have a heart attack unless some smart person tells me why I shouldn't be worried about being drafted in the next 5 years
I don't really see why a militia/paramilitary would have access to equipment just as decent as the one of the rec. marine force, however?

Can someone properly translate the title of the video? If this was filmed in Ukraine and it isn't the Ukrainian army, you can sure as hell bet your ass that it's the russians. Mercs and militias usually don't have the capabilities to fly combat helicopters in formation.
Looks like Russian Naval Infantry

Dunno if I'm smart enough to calm you down, but your country isn't going to war over Ukraine, not with Russia.
This is becoming the Balkan War V 2.0 that I feared.

It isn't and I really wish you'd stop calling it that

"Mi-24 attack helos flying over Belbek (Sevastopol)".
Which might or might not be true, the only evidence is that radio in the car speaks Ukrainian. There're planned military exercises near Ukrainian border going on, I recon airmobile forces having a right to pass over some of Ukrainian territory during these.

Would it be safe to say these are VDV?
We can tell if they're russian or not when we get some more pictures.
You'll know because some of them will be in their full get up and will be wearing sneakers.
Would it be safe to say these are VDV?
No it wouldn't be. These guys *might* be Naval infantry.
Would it be safe to say these are VDV?
They're totally militia bro, no way they are Russians at all, nope no way.

So if the Russian military is inside Ukraine border? how will the Ukrainian military respond? or their military is inactive or some reason?

ukraine has a pretty good military but the thing is that they are pretty much completely broke
Yanukovych stole the country empty, they cannot even pay pensions to anybody in March
it seems that they are relying on USA to uphold its promise to defend Ukraine, but I doubt USA will want to go to war with Russia
