Westernization.
Care to elaborate?
From WikiLeaks chat. [editline]06:33PM[/editline] Oh sweet: http://www.diarydig.org/search/
http://www.diarydig.org/search/?&type=Friendly%20Fire Anyone knows what's the meaning of the title underneath the links? For instance "BLUE-GREEN, RC EAST" under the first link.
Care to elaborate?
Don't force democracy/morals down a country's throat.
Don't force democracy/morals down a country's throat.
How would forcing that cause the exploit of Afghan resources?
Does he really think the Taliban does not have access to these materials? The thing is, when you put stuff like the names of informants on the internet anyone can download them. Even your enemies. http://www.newsweek.com/2010/07/30/taliban-says-it-will-target-names-exposed-by-wikileaks.html http://www.channel4.com/news/articles/uk/taliban+hunt+wikileaks+outed+afghan+informers/3727667 Releasing Collateral Murder was a good thing for the war but this, this is just reckless. There are more than one reason why most of those documents were classified. And while he doesn't have blood on his hands yet, hundreds of Afghan and Nato forces are at risk because of what he did. It sounds to me like he's doing the same thing he's accusing the media of doing.
Well ofcourse he can deny he has no blood on his hands, all he needs is soap and bleach to wash it off
This news article has inspired me to actually go and browse wiki leaks.
i still have yet to see a single document that puts anyone in danger
i still have yet to see a single document that puts anyone in danger
http://www.channel4.com/news/articles/uk/taliban+hunt+wikileaks+outed+afghan+informers/3727667 They blacked out the sensitive information so they're not making it easier to find this information, but all of the information that was blacked out is in the raw files that Wikileaks put on their website. There is some very damaging information there.
The Guardian, New York Times and Die Welt all published large amounts of the information in their papers and online sites last week, so no not all of the mainstream media is.
The New Yorker had an article praising Arssanage though it is an opinionated magazine.
It's hardly a list, there are a few here and there. But fine, even if they do kill every single person on it(unlikely), the document leak is worth it.
And here I thought I was dealing with a humanist, but apparently you and I are the same, only at different ends of the spectrum. :smugspike:
He said there's no proof they are harmed, like as of now.
"I gave a gun to the bad guy but he didn't shoot anyone yet."
Oh right, the Guardian and Der Spiegel, too. You know what they have in common? They're the ones Assange gave the leaks to first, if they hadn't gotten exclusivity, all the media outlets would have ignored it equally. [editline]10:49AM[/editline] I hate when people have this attitude that "common sense" seems to override actual facts or evidence. It's like saying that vaccines can't work, because it's "common sense" that giving someone an attenuated version of a virus or bacteria won't do anything. It just makes you sound stupid.
The Mafia kills informants. The Taliban is equal to an organized crime unit. Why don't you think the Taliban will not kill all the informants leaked?
Stop bitchin'. Assange said no one died and that the Pentagon is just trying to divert attention from the real issue and he's right.
I'm pretty sure that the Taliban will make a pretty good use of a list that contains the names of Afghan informers.
I agree with Ohadje for once. I heard someone make a good point in some news article something like - "Imagine if Assange had leaked D-Day." And to those who think that no harm will come to those whose names are listed are kidding themselves. Military information can believe it or not be secret for a reason.
Stop bitchin'. Assange said no one died and that the Pentagon is just trying to divert attention from the real issue and he's right.
It's been only a few days? What point is saying something like this? Obviously releasing these documents will have repercussions that last more than a week, even if some would prefer they are forgotten that quickly. People will die.
I didn't know conservatives could predict the future too
He really should have censored names or something though because I can see how it might end up doing more harm than good.
http://www.diarydig.org/search/?sort_dir=asc&sort_by=date&category=Defecting At least 7 names right there.
It figures that someone finally does something to defend the ideals of freedom of information and the people's right to own their government and he has to go into hiding.
Fuck the Pentagon. I wish that plane on 9/11 wiped that shit stain from existence completely.
This is one of the real dangers of journalism, or pseudo-journalism - you can be too self-righteous. That's one of the issues here; in his probably well-intentioned desire to "tell the world the truth", he's probably caused more harm than good. Of course, that's not the only issue here - he also just fucked up, plain and simple, by releasing the names of Afghanistan informants, which according to some newspapers I've read contain some very damaging information. I have no doubt that there will be blood over this - blood which didn't need to be spilled.
How was it the worst? When you invade a country and meet resistance- that's called people defending from a foreign enemy.
I'm guessing you don't know that Taliban=/=Afghanistan. The Taliban are no freedom fighters. [editline]01:36AM[/editline]
Fuck the Pentagon. I wish that plane on 9/11 wiped that shit stain from existence completely.
You should see a psychologist about your terrorist like thoughts. Because something is wrong with you if you think flying a plane into a building is acceptable.
The only terrorists here are the assholes in the Pentagon. And in the White House. and in Congress. [editline]01:43AM[/editline] I'm more afraid of the government than some Muslim bogeyman.
Wikileaks Afghanistan: Taliban 'hunting down informants' The Taliban has issued a warning to Afghans whose names might appear on the leaked Afghanistan war logs as informers for the Nato-led coalition. In an interview with Channel 4 News, Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, said they were studying and investigating the report, adding “If they are US spies, then we know how to punish them.” The warning came as the US military's top officer, Admiral Mike Mullen said that Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks, may already have blood on his hands following the leak of 92,000 classified documents relating to the war in Afghanistan by his website. "Mr Assange can say whatever he likes about the greater good he thinks he and his source are doing, but the truth is they might already have on their hands the blood of some young soldier or that of an Afghan family," he said. Information from the documents could reveal: -Names and addresses of Afghans cooperating with Nato forces -Precise GPS locations of Afghans -Sources and methods of gathering intelligence The US government has called in the FBI to help hunt those responsible for leaking tens of thousands of secret documents about the Afghanistan war. Robert Gates, the US Defense Secretary, warned that sources identified in the documents now risked being "targeted for retribution" by insurgents in Afghanistan. He pledged a "thorough, aggressive investigation" to identify the leakers and said that steps were being taken to restrict access to classified documents in future. Bradley Manning, a 22-year old intelligence analyst, is the prime suspect in the leak inquiry. He is currently already in custody in Kuwait after being arrested for allegedly leaking other information earlier this year. However, he was previously caught boasting that he had leaked tens of thousands of documents on the Afghan war to the Wikileaks website. The Pentagon suspects that Manning may have accomplices within the military. Earlier this week, Wikileaks published 90,000 documents – mostly reports detailing operations by American and other allied forces in Afghanistan between 2004 and 2009. The website is threatening to publish thousands more documents. In his first comments on the massive leak, Mr Gates said that "the battlefield consequences of the release of these documents are potentially severe and dangerous for our troops, our allies and Afghan partners, and may well damage our relationships and reputation in that key part of the world." "Intelligence sources and methods, as well as military tactics, techniques and procedures will become known to our adversaries," he added. The defense secretary promised "a thorough, aggressive investigation to determine how this leak occurred, to identify the person or persons responsible, and to assess the content of the information compromised." Mr Gates promised to take steps to protect the lives of US service members as well as Afghans possibly exposed by the leaks. The massive leak jeopardised the trust vital to gathering intelligence in the "field", said Mr Gates, a former CIA director. "We have considerable repair work to do," he said.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/afghanistan/7917955/Wikileaks-Afghanistan-Taliban-hunting-down-informants.html
Well fuck. Which brings us back to this post.
From WikiLeaks chat.

Meanwhile, a soldier accused of leaking video of a deadly helicopter attack in Iraq has been transferred to a base in the US. US Army Pfc Bradley Manning is to stand trial on charges he gave video of the attack - in which a Reuters photographer was killed - to Wikileaks. The Pentagon is also investigating whether he handed over the 90,000 classified documents. The army said on Friday that Pfc Manning, 22, had been moved from Kuwait to Quantico Marine Base in Virginia where he will be held pending trial. The Pentagon has said investigators were extending the helicopter attack video investigation to find out whether Pfc Manning was involved in the leak of the Afghanistan documents. A spokesman described him as a "person of interest".
Where's the trial for the ones who fucked up? Also I know they were careful about what to leak and blah blah but apparently not careful enough.
I'm pretty sure that the Taliban saying what it's going to do is more reliable than someone else saying what they're going to do.... Too bad these Wikileaks guys didn't edit the name before releasing the documents to the public eye.

I've been reading a bit through the Afghan war diary and I've yet to see an incident that mentions a person's name. Can anyone link me an incident with this?
