Well I mean it's a college campus
chances are every other student is a socialist revolutionary
Eh you'd be surprised. The only 'socialist revolutionary' I've encountered was some old dude handing out socialist alliance flyers at the uni. But that's probably because I study in my uni's business and law school and I don't really socialise on campus.
Is there even a flag today that hasn't been flown for colonial/imperialist purposes?
Is there even a flag today that hasn't been flown for colonial/imperialist purposes?
Why the Union Jack of course
I'll have you know the UK flag is the true flag that represents imperialism and colonialism you cali peeps.
Long live the empire, God save the queen
we fucked up way more countries than America ever has, countries that are still fucked to this day
America is Busch League colonialism, you never even forced any of the countries you invaded to play cricket

We forced Japan to play baseball and American football. \:v:/
At the college that I plan on going to, they have an entire _building_ dedicated to the international community of the student body.
They said that they don't have enough flagpoles :v:
Unless you're hanging a flag to be purely offensive/get a rise out of someone, I see no issue with having one. I just hope that they were treated with respect, because some flags can be hella expensive (for no real reason)

That's right folks, this decision was the product of a massive voting pool of 12 in which only 10 actually participated. (and as previously stated it only affects one room buried in the student center)
A room used by 12 people. A room used by 0.39% of the student body UC Irvine.
This title is stupidly sensationalist. Can a mod change it?
A couple of God-fearing patriots oughta lock themselves in with the flag before these godless commie bastards can take away Old Glory

That flag is a common sight on my campus actually.

but come on, neither of those are anywhere near as dull and incomprehensible as cricket!

Well shit, 308 Canadians make the laws on behalf of 35 million citizens, only 0.000088% of Canadians. Representative democracy? What's that?
It's not even stupidly sensationalist. The 12 people are students. It is somewhat sensationalist, but not stupidly.
University of California students vote to take down the American flag on campus as it symbolizes "colonialism and imperialism"
The bolded word is wrong, it's not the whole campus.
It's a single room.
What is it with American's and their flag? The only time you even see an English flag is if the World Cup is on or there is some dumb nationalist rally.
Should be replaced by the far less offensive Canadian flag.
“freedom of speech, in a space that aims to be as inclusive as possible can be interpreted as hate speech.”
The rot goes deep in some places doesn't it.

My friend and I had this discussion some time ago. He moved to Belgium as a duel US / Belgian citizen and told me about what he experienced, seeing both firsthand. He is by no means an ultra-nationalist "'Murica" type of guy, but he noticed that no one really had any patriotism so to speak. We came to the conclusion that while the US may overdo patriotism, being anemic in love of country can be just as a jarring. Basically, Mark Twain said it best when he said, "Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it."

A lot of blood was split so we didn't have yours
Its hip and cool to hate on tumblr for being overly sensitive.
Mostly because a very vocal chunk of tumblr is overly sensitive.
this thread is the definition of 'overly sensitive'.

waaaaa my flag can't be displayed in a small portion of campus that an even smaller portion of students even visit

Blood spilt for better representation, less taxes and not wanting to pay for pointless wars. How did that go for you?
Snip

And an even smaller portion of students even care about considering only 10 participated in said vote.

It worked for maybe 20 years tops. Opinions over the worthwhile-ness of said result may vary.

Not bad all things considered.

When did the Fox News comment section open a university
remember to hate your country
So I'm assuming these same students would be perfectly 100% supportive of removing any and all public funding from the school as well. Public school funding sets standards for students to obtain more affordable education than being burdened with ALL costs of the university, which in this country typically are idolized as the ability to obtain an advanced education. Public funding has been used in instances of colonialism and imperialism as well. I think it would also create an atmosphere of "financial inclusiveness", where any country can feel free to support the school.
This is literally their argument. It's one thing to add every nation's flags. I think that's an excellent idea because it serves multiple purposes, as well as inclusiveness. But this is silly.

But the Americans massacred the Native Americans in the US' territory, which makes them irredemable monsters. Even the worst famines that happened during the British Raj and the Afrikaner concentration camps little more than tiny blips on the radar compared to that.
Check and mate pal. The Amerikkkans are obviously the most evil empire ever.
Oh shit
The UK guys better don't know about this...

A little late on this one

I get the whole patriotism and supporting your country thing, I probably like Britain just as much as the average American likes America, it's literally just the flag stuff that is alien to me. As far as I am concerned it's just a symbol to represent a country, like a logo represents a company. Don't get me wrong, I don't think there is anything wrong with the way American's act with the flag, it's just strange to me that the way you gauge patriotism is by how much you worship a pattern.

The ban has already been reversed. As a student at UCI, this was an incredibly short sighted decision by the student government and clearly makes us look bad, which is why the university had to take emergency countermeasures to prevent the idiots from making the school look worse.
