I get the whole patriotism and supporting your country thing, I probably like Britain just as much as the average American likes America, it's literally just the flag stuff that is alien to me. As far as I am concerned it's just a symbol to represent a country, like a logo represents a company. Don't get me wrong, I don't think there is anything wrong with the way American's act with the flag, it's just strange to me that the way you gauge patriotism is by how much you worship a pattern.
I think for most Americans it is a symbol of our fierce nature, the flag was created in the fires of war, 45,000 volunteers (with massive help from the French) went up against the most powerful country in the world at the time and got them to recognize them as a country.
Then almost 30 years later we fought the Brits again and are still a Country today having replaced the British as most powerful.
