Holy shit that transcript is amazing. I feel like I could write a bot that could pump out Trump speeches that were indistinguishable from the real thing.
Some stats:
61 "You know"s
32 "OK"s
22 "Fake"s including 13 "Fake News"s
12 "by the way"s
6 "tremendous"s
6 "incredible"s
5 "fantastic"s
“I’m actually having a very good time, OK?” he said. “Tomorrow, they will say, ‘Donald Trump rants and raves at the press.’ I’m not ranting and raving. I’m just telling you, you know, you’re dishonest people…I’m not ranting and raving. I love this. I’m having a good time doing it. But tomorrow, the headlines are going to be, ‘Donald Trump rants and raves.’ I’m not ranting and raving.”
This didn't make it into the OP, jesus christ.
it's a tautological statement meant to prove itself true
when a lie becomes a tautology our brains kinda just get confused and we want to stop thinking for a while
Trump succeeds at making that happen with flying colors. I've had to decode some really poorly worded shit in my time but basically every time I try to listen to or read something Trump has said my brain just shuts down. It's so damned hard to follow his train of thought that my brain just stops even trying to bother. He just repeats the same thing in slightly different words ten times in a row while slipping in what he's actually trying to say between or in the middle of his repetitions. Makes it incredibly difficult to focus on what he's trying to communicate.
it's like he's gradually losing the ability to put words together in a way that makes sense
Is it just me or does Trump seem way more calm when speaking now? I don't watch alot of these but compared to what I'm used to hearing from him, he sounds like a nervous child giving a speech to a classroom.
I made the mistake of looking at the comments for the full conference. Don't make that mistake. It's largely just people posting "CNN FAKE NEWS" or "LOOK AT HOW BADLY HE SHIT ALL OVER CNN".

I know a very avid Trump supporter, and tried showing them how awful the press conference was and how scary the war on the media he's waging, but they kept deflecting that he's telling the media as it is and that the issue isn't about Russian collusion, but how it got leaked and that Hillary's email was worse because of negligence. I showed them the hypocrisy of Trump advocating leaks in his campaign but now opposes them, but they just said I'm spinning it like the fake news media is. "But Hilary..."
So Shepard Smith over on Fox News spoke out on this today.
I'll be honest, I'm fairly left-wing (neoclassical liberalism), but I've got a newfound respect for the guy. You can tell when someone has a passion for the industry, no matter what their outlet, and has a great sense of journalistic integrity. He's definitely not toeing the party line. Seems like the entire industry is also pretty impressed with him.
I'm not going to say this is a big turning point in Fox's ideology, but we could definitely be seeing some cracking around the edges. Smith is their lead anchor, he is effectively the face of their entire newsgathering operation. If Fox News ends up positioning itself against Trump, that could challenge the established media dynamic.
As I recall, Smith also jumped quickly to Acosta's defense back in January when this whole "fake news" shit started.
Its good to see there are still anchors out there willing to circle the wagons in defense of their industry, even when it means protecting the integrity of a rival network.

Same thing here. I have a coworker that blindly follows.
I don't find Trump very charismatic so I'm not sure how so many people got hooked onto him and just accept everything he does/says. If who I wanted to win was elected, I wouldn't pretend to be happy with everything they do.

I don't know what Trump does that inspires such loyalty in some people, he's a bumbling businessman that struggles to string together a meaningful sentence. At least I could understand people's devotion if he was a powerful orator but he really isn't.

I also have a few old coworkers in the same mindset, it's honestly amazing (and unsettling) to hear them defending Trump no matter what. Any argument even remotely against Easy D results in a "LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!" response.

He says things that people who have no clue about politics or how the world works want to hear. They live in their own little bubble and he's brilliant at reinforcing it.
I think as a phrase it gets plastered around a little too liberally but cognitive dissonance really is something.
It's fucking bizarre. RIPBILLYMAYS is going to school to be some sort of nuclear engineer or technician (sorry I can't remember) and Chonch works in finance. These are quite clearly educated people who just seem totally content with someone, the President of the United States no less, just being a neverending spigot of falsehoods.
Most of the Nazi high command weren't idiots either. They were well educated people. Joseph Goebbles had a degree in philosophy and a minor in history from the University of Heidelberg.
They knew how to manipulate people who were less intelligent than they were.
It's the same thing with any dangerous populist movement.

Says a lot, don't it?
Stephen Colbert weighs in on the press conference: Worth a watch, 'cause he covers a lot that wasn't covered in the OP, giving you an idea of how insane and cringe-worthy the conference really was.

He kept bringing up Hillary and the campaign every 5 minutes during this, it was ridiculous. Also he sounded defeated last night.
Why don't the reporters ask him why has his cabinet been purging scientific data? Why don't they question why he continuously brings up Hillary and the campaign, when no one makes any mention to her or the campaign? There are so many good questions to ask this man so we could get a better look into his dysfunctional mind.
Also why did he mention blowing up the Russian spy boat and nuclear war?
I have to wonder how it could be worse
Trump attempting to dodge a question by using a "smoke bomb" that turned out to be a stink bomb?

Is it because the ends justify the means? Do you just get a personal thrill out of watching someone in a position of power attack the press? Is it just schadenfreude and you really don't care about the longterm consequences?
I feel like even if you agree with everything Trump wants to do there has to come a breaking point where you denounce his dishonesty, particularly when you have repeatedly railed against the dishonesty of Trump's opponents in the past. I just want to see one person say "Yeah I agree with the travel ban and the wall and the keystone pipeline but I also think Trump's statements about fake news are worrying and he has a habit of lying a lot".
It's entirely possible to be brilliant in certain fields and be completely inept in others. Just look at Ben Carson.
