I was home alone about 3 months back when two men broke into my house (I live in Australia) and they were carrying weapons (a hunting knife and a small ceremonial sword that they had clearly sharpened). I came out of my room about midnight to get a drink to find them coming down the hall towards me and without a moments hesitation they ran toward me and started to beat the living shit out of me while asking if anyone else was in the house. I was tied up and beaten while they ransacked the house and near unto the point of torture once they found my floor safe in order to get the code out of me. The whole thing lasted about 4 hours and the only reason I'm still alive today is because I played it cool. Had I gotten aggressive against these guys I would have appeared to be a much larger threat than I actually am, and 90% of the time people that do this aren't in a logical frame of mind (often drugging up before hand) and threats are dealt with differently. I was able to convince them that I worked for a popular local deli that was about 2-3 km down the road from my house and that a key they had found on my desk was the key to the safe there. They tied me up with gaffa tape they had found in my garage and told me they would be back after checking it out to kill me if I was lying (I'm not sure of the validity of their claim to this day but I wasn't going to stick around to find out). I waited for what felt like my entire lifetime before I decided I had to make a move. We have a door at the back of our house off the main bedroom that opens to a courtyard by our neighbours fence and I thought that would be my best bet for escape (as its shielded from view from most areas around it), with my hands and ankles bound I hobbled as quickly as humanly possible to that door and using the ensuite bathroom faucet and all of my physical might I managed to free my hands and then my feet. I jumped the fence and ran to my neighbours back door and started beating on it as quietly as I knew would wake them. They did not recognise me when they opened the door for me, my face was swollen and covered in blood and plasma. I had a broken nose, two black eyes and I now have 6 teeth that are at least half fake. The first thing I had them say to the police as they were called is they needed to get to this deli in order to find these guys actively trying to rob the place and sure enough as the police rushed to the scene they had found that the place had a smashed in front window and it was a little trashed but the people had bolted when they saw the police car rushing down the street toward my house (the second car was much later to arrive to the deli as its a reasonably small country town in australia so we don't have more than two cars out at night at this car was busy at first responding to another call). I got lost in my own words there but what I am trying to say is that physically fighting is in my opinion not the answer. Having first hand dealt with the stress of a situation similar to this one I can assure you that your first thought is never to arm yourself or to fight. It's a whole different ballgame to actually stab, hit, or shoot someone though. Some people just don't have it in them. In a fight or flight situation they will not fight. Maybe she was one. Maybe it made her feel better to have it even if she wouldn't really use it.
