As a broad generalization, you could probably consider herbivore men to be the natural outcome of the metrosexual phenomenon combined with a fairly significant doubt about long-term career stability. To a high school or college grad, committing to a wife and kids is a lot more risky and scary when you really have no guarantee that you'll actually have an income capable of sustaining all of that and saving for retirement in five to ten years, let alone thirty.
And then you factor in property and rental costs, although if you were living in a smaller town, further away from the major population centers like Tokyo/Osaka/etc., it can be okay. Heck, I saw apartment quotes that were lower than what comparable British Columbia lower mainland/south island rental costs got up to in the years leading up to and following the 2010 Olympics, when real estate went a little nuts.
Japanese women don't generally like muscleheads and gym rats though, they prefer the "skinny yet fit" look. Who can blame 'em?
B-but Galo Sengen told me other wise!
