NASA is part of the government. This means that all the information about solar storms that comes from NASA has probably been heavily altered to instilling a sense of fear for some apocalypse in 2012. This is exactly the kind of hysteria they're trying to raise.

I'm pretty sure that, regardless of whether or not a device is plugged in, if a magnetic field of sufficient strength passes through it (or changes in strength whilst intersecting the circuit), a voltage and current will be induced.
You don't want this to happen, as it takes only a small amount of misplaced electricity to burn out a transitor. Computers are pretty much entirely reliant on transistors. Why do you think static can damage computers so horribly?
Unless we install a device to prevent the interaction of solar weather with the Earth, or a device that will generate a field powerful enough to nullify the effects of the solar weather on the Earth's magnetic field, we won't be truly safe.
I guess we could start installing magnetic shielding on all components created from this moment on, but anything created before now will still be in danger.
I might be entirely wrong. I'm tired and can't be bothered researching the causes and effects of the storm; if it's not storm>magnetosphere>electrical devices then I'm sorry for misleading you.
