So how does it feel, Americans? You waited for an opportunity to great aliens in LA and suddenly they land in Chelyabinsk, Russia. Also, have this. It shows just how bright it was. Watch from 4:15.
if this happened in america people would jump from their cars and start shooting each other yelling "it's the second coming!"
Oh man I hope someone caught the thing going through the sky on video
Have some. God bless dashcam.
Oh man I hope someone caught the thing going through the sky on video, unlikely though, seeing as how it was so random and out of nowhere. This is exciting though, is this the first time we ever captured something like this on video? It's incredible looking even though all we've really seen is the huge ass overcast it caused, that and the loud as hell explosion.
Happened in Canada awhile back:
Why... why our former president, now prime-minister has to be so fucking dumb. "Meteorite shower can be a great simbol for Krasnoyarsk Economics Forum". Sorry, can't find source in English right now.
Have some. God bless dashcam.
And considering a ton of people have dash cams in Russia, more will likely surface as time goes by.
Have some. God bless dashcam.
That looks like a movie. I know it's real, but...damn. Looks like a scene from a movie.
Given the angle of the smoke trail, and my basic knowledge of the atmosphere, that thing broke apart at 80-100KM up. If the shockwave alone could shatter windows from that far, it's kinetic energy was on par with nuclear bombs. if it weren't for our lovely atmosphere, that probably would've killed a lot of people(barring that with no atmosphere, we'd all die).

Car Alarm symphony.
that probably would've killed a lot of people(barring that with no atmosphere, we'd all die).
I laughed louder than I should have.
How would the impact have been if the Russians hadn't shot it with a missile, I wonder?
Holy fuck that would scare the shit out of me. I would definitely think we're being under attack.
Oh wow, I missed this
According to unconfirmed reports, the meteorite was intercepted by an air defense unit at the Urzhumka settlement near Chelyabinsk. A missile salvo reportedly blew the meteorite to pieces at an altitude of 20 kilometers.

According to unconfirmed reports, the meteorite was intercepted by an air defense unit at the Urzhumka settlement near Chelyabinsk. A missile salvo reportedly blew the meteorite to pieces at an altitude of 20 kilometers.
The meteorite was bigger than what was in the video? /ninjas
Have some. God bless dashcam.
Thank God for Russia's shitty car insurance, thanks to you as well!
Happened in Canada awhile back:
Oh wow I can't believe I forgot about that..so long ago, makes you wonder what other videos of meteors there are. [editline]15th February 2013[/editline]
The meteorite was bigger than what was in the video? /ninjas
Whaaaat, holy shit if that's true imagine if they didn't shoot missiles at it and it hit a city..that thing must've been pretty big. Either that or it's a common thing for them to shoot down large meteors and we just never hear about it because it either breaks up into pieces that don't cause any damage/are too small to see at all or in the middle of nowhere.
I think the best part is how casual all these pedestrians are about this
Oh wow, I missed this
Bullshit. No way in hell they'd have time to react, let alone the missiles reach it before it hit. That rock was flying at velocities in excess of mach 10. Fastest missile that is produced goes mach 5 max. Sure they could launch directly towards it, but i seriously doubt they'd have hit it.
God damn and when space shuttles come back into the atmosphere I jump from the sonic boom. Imagine hearing that and having windows shatter.

Far more likely it just hit the thickest band of atmosphere and blew up.
Neil DeGrasse Tyson posted this not long ago in response to Asteroid 2012 DA14, though I feel like it fits here. https://twitter.com/neiltyson/status/302248484877238273/photo/1

Missiles can be intercepted at for example Mach 20. Again I don't know and its unconfirmed.
So, does insurance cover broken windows from meteorite impacts?
So, does insurance cover broken windows from meteorite impacts?
'Acts of God' is such a lovely clause in an insurance policy.
It is in theory possible, and I assume it would be in the military's best interests to try and diminish impact, which is good. [editline]14th February 2013[/editline] really my automerge
I once saw something exactly like this one time while driving on the highway. That is literally the same shape, color, everything that I saw. While I watched it go towards the horizon I freaking out half expecting there to be a giant explosion and that I'd be watching the whole area get nuked but nothing happened. It was a 2-3 years ago, I can't remember exactly when. It was on the news later that night as a green fireball or something like that.
Same thing happened here last December. It was a few days off from the whole "mayan end of the world" thing so my sister freaked out a little.
Interception isn't missile speed. Missiles can be intercepted at for example Mach 20. Again I don't know and its unconfirmed.
I know that. Coupling with reaction times assuming that they did predict it, they'd need a rocket travelling faster than that meteor in order to hit it before impact. It's impossible. You saw how fast it crossed the sky, right? 25,000 Mph+. Unless they had the missile in it's path beforehand, they wouldn't hit it in time.
This is the best thing I've ever seen, hands down. I wish I was there.
I know that. Coupling with reaction times assuming that they did predict it, they'd need a rocket travelling faster than that meteor in order to hit it before impact. Because there are few things that go that fast other than very expensive man made objects and natural objects from outerspace. I wouldn't rule out anything, as it is a unconfirmed report. It says they intercepted it at an altitude of 20 kilometres. Which means they probably tracked it long before, its not like its a 'stealth meteorite'. But, it could be a translation error and maybe they mean't tracked. BBC is reporting on this:
The traces from falling objects could be seen in Yekaterinburg, about 200km (125 miles) south-east of Chelyabinsk, a witness told the Reuters news agency. "A meteorite exploded above the Chelyabinsk region," an emergencies ministry spokesman told Interfax. A witness in Chelyabinsk told Reuters that a huge blast was heard early on Friday morning and that shockwaves were felt in a 19-storey building in the town centre. The Interfax news agency said that preliminary reports indicated that four people were injured by flying glass. People in the Chelyabinsk and Sverdlovsk regions reported seeing "burning objects" in the sky.
At first I was amazed...then i sat and realized just how deadly those are... Just the utter speed of it is unbelievable... Every nation on this earth needs to start pushing more for space programs. Its just come to a point where its time to stop dicking around about it. Maybe ill go back to school for this... at least then i could die knowing i tried to help... Idk. I think were an amazing species... just dont have our priorities straight. Then again.. wat do i know... im ranting and that video freaked me out but utterly amazed me all at once!
Updates show injuries being reported, emergency services being dispatched into the area and aircraft being used to seek out impact sites.
For those ham radio nerds, UVB-76 stopped broadcasting when the meteor hit http://www.justin.tv/uvb76repeater?utm_campaign=live_embed_click&utm_source=uvb-76.net#/w/4847705328/102 /x/ is blowing up over this shit and it's pretty interesting.
