It looks like it exploded seconds before impact and had a shotgun effect on a whole section of city.
actually that's how nuclear missiles are to be used. They explode above the city so the explosion won't get absorbed by buildings

Wasn't there this meteorite somewhere in Russia like 50 years ago which flattened a huge area of forest? That meteorite also exploded above the ground for some reason.
Why did it explode in the air anyways? I mean it should have been a giant thing to reach so close, but why didn't it get closer?
I think it has something to do with the extreme heating and pressure they go through while coming down. I'd imagine for a meteor big enough to go through the atmosphere without burning completely, that internal parts of it might vaporize instantly along with the sudden intense change in pressure might make them break apart.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunguska_event 104 years ago.
Honestly I think the Tunguska Event was a large chunk of a meteor that passed by us back in 1908, and if it was there we had no clue about it because we haven't even gone into space yet or even invent radar, but we'll probably never know. Still fun to talk about though
According to wikipedia, the green color of the fireball means it's comprised mostly of Copper. Thanks space! Might as well be raining down money.
300 people hurt Form flying glass says the news.

People start thinking about getting rid of the penny and now space is throwing giant ones at us.
Space needs to work on its aim though.

300 seems like a stretch for flying glass injury, then again 1.1mn population.
Is there a video or picture of the crater? Or did it stop at the building?
Makes you think. I wonder where this giant space penny came from. Where was it's origins? How long was it traveling in space before it got stuck in our suns gravity well and eventually intercepted our orbit perfectly so that it met it's quick demise in a Russian city?
Welcome to Earth, space penny.
Chelyabinsk meteorites are so harsh they explode without touching the ground

When the smoke cleared.. there was only the imprint of a face in the ground.. that face, was of Abraham Lincoln.

I am crious why the meteoryte hasn't been noticed. Nobody was alerted of the danger.

Was probably rogue, and avoids being seen on radar, before its to late. Hopefully there is no recorded deaths.

Apparently it came from the sunny side and we can only detect meteors that come from the night side. Lemme find source.
8:10 GMT: Oleg Malkov, an aerospace scientist at Moscow State University, told Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper that the meteorite went undetected by space scanners, likely because it was coming from the direction of the Sun. "We can only register stones coming from the direction of the night sky," he explained. Malkov confirmed that the meteor shower in the Urals was not connected to the 2012DA14 asteroid that will approach Earth in a few hours.
I think this was posted earlier in the thread too.

it was detected long ago by NASA but they didn't notify Russian authorities bc the US govt said not to so it could damage the Russian infrastructure!!!!

My friend just noticed how all the videos are published 14.05 and the official info says that the explosion happened 15.05
