When this comes around will it delete all my shit?
When this comes around will it delete all my shit?
No, basically all it will do is ask if you want to keep your personal files, keep windows and your personal files, or fuck it and destroy all of it and start fresh.

Neat, reserved.

I'm still a bit confused... So once it installs, it will delete the Windows 7 install from my drive, install Windows 10 and everything else on my drive will be there, and be usable?
Kinda scared since last time I tried to get the Insider edition on my PC it corrupted everything and had to reformat :(
I can only reserve right now. How long does it take before you can upgrade?

When it's released in two months

it makes my eyes bleed
I'm conflicted because I'm very comfortable with Windows 7 and I hear Windows 10 keeps a lot of features from Windows 8 (which looks like it was designed for tablets, not desktops), but at the same time this is a free OS and I'll eventually have to upgrade.
Ignore the interface for Win8/10, the stuff going on behind is worth the upgrade. It is a massive step forward.
(I am saying this as someone who is still stubbornly using Windows 7 on my main PC)
Will I get an handy iso file, rather do a fresh install than upgrading.
I was wondering this, from a screen cap of a recent presentation by Microsoft it showed that we can get the media (as an ISO) both from the update and the Microsoft site. Which is good as I am planning to get an SSD and start fresh, I don't want to upgrade a 2 year old install of Windows 7.
With DX12 coming, it is probably time to move forward.
Is there an option to install it to a separate drive? Or am I going to have to move my 7 install to another drive? I plan on dual booting 7 and 10 just in case I don't end up liking it or there are things I have that aren't compatible with 10. I love the way I have my drives partitioned out right now and don't particularly want to mess around with it in order to dual boot.
What if you have the technical preview installed? When W10 fully releases will it update to that or what?
So I really don't want to "upgrade" to Windows 10 from 7. I want a fresh install from an .ISO file like every other time I install an OS.
Why not just provide a simple system like this:
1. Input your legitimate Windows 7/8 key at a Microsoft website.
2. Receive a legitimate Windows 10 key and download links for x86/x64 .ISO files in your preferred language.
3. Copy onto DVD/USB, install and activate as usual.

Because of internet, it would be too easy to just google a key since there is thousand of them online and MS can't block them all

Do Dreamspark/MSDN keys count as retail?

I like how wickedplayer494 uses the word "payload" to make it sound malicious
It's like if 8 and 7 had a child.
I just realized what a missed opportunity it was to not call it Windows 15. It's 7 + 8, it's the release year like the old 9x versions, and we'd already foregone any sane version-numbering scheme when we first decided to skip 9.
Suddenly I get why windows 9 was skipped
touhou fans are just that scary
So there's an option to avoid formatting your drive(s) when upgrading? Would a lot of my registry, data and otherwise have to be refreshed or something?
No matter what I do, the app wont appear on my Win 7 desktop, or my Win 8.1 laptop...

It's not a big deal to be honest. It's not like they're going to run out of stock.

The reserve is probably just to cause hype and get some preliminary numbers on adoption.
I have now signed my Death Warrant (by Preparing for windows 10).
It's annoying, but it's not mandating an update. The only negative I can think of is that having legitimate popups act like malicious popups is confusing for non-tech savvy users and can build bad habits.
I thought that actually. When I saw the icon I thought "Did I install something?" When it told me I was available to reserve my copy I thought "Wow, this... doesn't look legit."
I'm not used to MS doing that.

When upgrading, the Windows installation folder is renamed to Windows.OLD. The files of the new version are then copied to the usual Windows folder. Some files of your previous Windows installation are also copied over if compatible (i.e. drivers and settings).
That's how it usually works and that's about it. Anything outside of the Windows folder is untouched, so all your stuff is safe. You can also remove the Windows.OLD folder if you wish.

I'm using a MSDN Win 8.1 key and i got the offer

the whole point of windows 10 was to resolve that conflict though
Someone already done that

No, no, no, you're missing the most important part for ultimate sperglord:

I booted up my computer, and saw the notification in my taskbar.
To be honest I'll just leave it there as it's not really obtrusive.

But on a serious note, I'm really damn lucky. I got my hands on a Windows 8.1 installation about a week ago, seems I was just in time.
