I thought that actually. When I saw the icon I thought "Did I install something?" When it told me I was available to reserve my copy I thought "Wow, this... doesn't look legit." I'm not used to MS doing that.
Seriously, until I saw it in the news I thought it was some sort of adware or some toolbar-like crap I installed by accident. Reserve a free copy of W10? If it's free, why do I need to reserve it? Yeah the way they did this was sketchy as fuck.
I do not see it, and I have a legit copy. :(
I do not see it, and I have a legit copy. :(
Do you have automatic updates on? If not, you need to install it manually.
Can I put the free upgrade on a USB stick like any other iso? I have my windows 7 iso on a USB stick.
I have two PCs running Windows 7. One is Pro, the other is home. Will I be able to use the same reservation for both computers and will the upgrade only get me the home edition?
"Yes, you can get a free upgrade for each of your eligible Windows devices. All you need to do is make a separate reservation for each device you want to upgrade."
I guess so.

To be honest I'll just leave it there as it's not really obtrusive. [T]http://kittehcat.org/upl/2015-06-01_18-01-37.png[/T] But on a serious note, I'm really damn lucky. I got my hands on a Windows 8.1 installation about a week ago, seems I was just in time.
I got my key from G2A and I'm fine lol
So you need to install SP1 on the windows 7 before getting the KB3035583 update?
I got it on my 8.1 desktop but not my 8.1 laptop. Strange.
Give me a little icon you windowsy bastards!
Saw it on my desktop running W7 but not on my Surface Pro using 8.1
Saw it on my desktop running W7 but not on my Surface Pro using 8.1
Offer isn't available for surface tablets.
Offer isn't available for surface tablets.
So I can't upgrade my Surface to Windows 10?
Hm, I can't see it on my 8.1 install. Just installed all the updates too.
So I can't upgrade my Surface to Windows 10?
You can. Offer is not available for Windows RT tablets.
You can. Offer is not available for Windows RT tablets.
Surface Pro 3 doesn't use RT
Surface Pro 3 doesn't use RT
As I said you can. What Skeeve was quoting only applies to RT tablets. Yours is not.
I have the update but no icon. The .exe for it exists (windows/system32/GWX)
Seriously, until I saw it in the news I thought it was some sort of adware or some toolbar-like crap I installed by accident. Reserve a free copy of W10?
As I said you can. What Skeeve was quoting only applies to RT tablets. Yours is not.
He was very ambiguous with his wording. And I only asked because I didn't see it on my Surface. [editline].[/editline] He could have just said it'd work
He was very ambiguous with his wording. And I only asked because I didn't see it on my Surface.
He was actually just wrong, since you specifically stated it was a Surface Pro.
-snip-
All I care about is responsiveness/speed/customization and apart from boot times, Microsoft doesn't really seem to care a lot about any of those. I shouldn't have to wait for the Task Manager to pop up and yet this has been the case in the last 4 versions of Windows (after a few months of use, that is). It always slows down (XP was worse than 8.1, I admit). It always has these slow moments where you just want shit to pop up if you click it. There's lots of tiny things that make me hate Windows, but I just stick with it because all in all it works OK for day-to-day use. I'd dualboot Linux with W8.1 but they've made it difficult with the secureboot/UEFI stuff. Also cmd is a travesty, they should make Powershell standard. /rant
I have the update but no icon. The .exe for it exists (windows/system32/GWX)
I think that if your system is currently deemed incompatible in some way the icon program (GWX.exe) closes as soon as it starts and the actual reservation program itself (GWXUX.exe) refuses to show anything.
Nevermind, I see it now
I think that if your system is currently deemed incompatible in some way the icon program (GWX.exe) closes as soon as it starts and the actual reservation program itself (GWXUX.exe) refuses to show anything.
Why would my system be deemed incompatible though? I uses to have win8 on here but went to win7 because a lot of my older games did not work
Why would my system be deemed incompatible though? I uses to have win8 on here but went to win7 because a lot of my older games did not work
They might still be working on support for one or more drivers you use.
-snip I can't comprehend context-
I booted up my computer, and saw the notification in my taskbar. To be honest I'll just leave it there as it's not really obtrusive. I got my hands on a Windows 8.1 installation about a week ago, seems I was just in time.
I don't know why people think this is a huge issue. Do people not realize that if that icon annoys you, you can just click the down arrow and hide it (and all the notifications that come from it)? Took me like 2 seconds to do that after I reserved my upgrade. Super unobtrusive.
So it says it might have some problems with my integrated graphics, but not the dedicated card for my laptop. That wouldn't be bad, right?
Ran some updates and rebooted - it's there.
