i wonder how the windows installer handles updating something that has programs installed in multiple hard drives
Will I get an handy iso file, rather do a fresh install than upgrading.
Can someone actually confirm this? MS doesn't say anything about an ISO, just an upgrade. I'd much rather have the ISO (or at least a license key) and do a fresh install.
So, someone who has windows 10, how many games become unplayable?
That's the only reason I'm weary, as some games only worked on XP and now I cannot play them on 8.1.
(hi fallout 3)
Can't really remember how, but I got Fallout 3 working on Windows 8 (assuming you mean it crashes soon after starting a new game). Just something with the config file iirc.
Good thing I disabled updates.
Desktop got the notification, but it will wait until I can get some unreplaceable files off it first.
Waiting for it on the laptop. This thing is ready for it.

you legit get a new notification. Not a windows update notification.

I'm wondering the same. This is the only reason I haven't reserved a copy yet. Are the compatibility issues going to be even worse? Windows 8 already has problems with some games. I'm afraid getting Windows 10 will make more issues.

Have fun with having more known security holes than a colander.

From a Microsoft presentation when they announced this.
People are fussy about software appearing without their approval.
Personally I don't mind, but there would have been nothing wrong with releasing a download utility.
It's all about marketing.
why advertise a free upgrade when you can send it to every user instantly?
I'm still a bit confused... So once it installs, it will delete the Windows 7 install from my drive, install Windows 10 and everything else on my drive will be there, and be usable?
If you choose to have windows 10 keep your personal files and apps, then it keeps most of the windows folders like windows.old and stuff, but if its just the personal files, it auto moves your music and all that to your new os and removes anything you chose to remove to windows.old.
I'll probably do this on my laptop as a test, I don't want to be one of these people who just stays on the same os forever.
How separate is the store? I can use it just like win 7 right?

That's actually a good idea.
I will do the same thing when it becomes available - better to do that then risk a lot of time reverting my main computer
some have already asked how to remove the icon
Seriously? It's a 14x14 button for a free upgrade in the bottom corner.
I don't see anyth-

On 10122 and 10130 I am suffering a huge bug where full screen games or fullscreen windowed games will cause an entire system freeze, things are still running but explorer died, and so does the app. Might be Nvidia, might be dual monitors, could be both, but it's annoying. I need a 1px gap somewhere to fix this currently. Until I hit this bug I was fine though.
I don't know why people think this is a huge issue. Do people not realize that if that icon annoys you, you can just click the down arrow and hide it (and all the notifications that come from it)?
Took me like 2 seconds to do that after I reserved my upgrade. Super unobtrusive.
Too much effort it would seem
My motherboard, processor, ram, and hard drives are coming in on Wednesday. I'm wondering if I should install 8.1 on it or wait until 10 becomes available on DreamSpark.....

Well as long as you can wait until July 29th to use your computer at all, go for windows 10!

Would you be able to wait to use a custom built PC you've been waiting to build for months?
So I've just installed the SP1 and the KB3035583 update has yet to show up. Is there any prior updates I should install so it appears or what?

I've had SP1 installed for a while now and I can't find anything on KB3035583. It's not installed and windows update says I don't have any available important updates.

if I'm looking at this right, it's possible to upgrade to Windows 10 via an ISO if you're only on Windows 8? Because if so, I'll be so happy. Cannot update whatsoever, so I hit a brick wall through a windows update upgrade.
If some of you don't have the "Get Windows 10" app then you MAY have an OEM (preinstalled) OS and according to them, the devs have yet to optimize it for the rest of the platforms. It's kind of annoying.
FAQ
If you don’t see the Get Windows 10 app on your PC, it might be because:
Your device isn’t up-to-date with at least Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 Update.
Windows Update is turned off or is not set to received updates automatically.
You’ve blocked or uninstalled the necessary Windows Update functionality.
Your device is not running genuine Windows.
Running Windows Update and installing any available updates will fix the first three issues. Need more help? Go to our Windows Community Forum.
PCs that we determine cannot run Windows 10 will not see the Get Windows 10 app before July 29, 2015. After July 29, 2015, we’ll enable the icon in the system tray. This is to help ensure that you can easily check your PC’s compatibility if you choose.
If your device is managed as part of a school or business network, please check with your IT administrator about upgrading to Windows 10.
So if we want to use the iso to upgrade does windows 7 need to be already on the computer or do we just use the CD key from windows 7?

As of now, we can't say for sure. We'll have to wait as they roll out updates for it as we go along.

As for someone that has beta tested this since it came out, i can safety say the key will be transferred over to your new os after you upgrade. As it is automatic and it did it for me, or, if it doesn't do it for you, they will probably post it on the site.

Welp, I guess that either means my laptop can't get it because it's OEM or it's just too shit to run W10.

Got to wait till Acer fattens the OS up with preinstalled bullshit I guess for my laptop
I don't want to update. I hate windows updates as it is, since they inevitably break something. So what's updating to an entire new OS going to fuck up. I think I'll wait until I next reformat
