I've had to manually install the KB on all of my machines. It was marked as an optional update.
So far the only things I know of that prevent you from receiving this update are having Windows 7/8 Enterprise, being behind a WSUS server, or having a domain joined machine. And of course an invalid installation...
I have two machines with the exact same internet setup and the same versions of windows 8. Only one of them is getting the update. It makes no sense.
For some reason my friend who's running pirated W7 on his desktop got the prompt to register before my legit OEM laptop did. Microsoft pls.
For some reason my friend who's running pirated W7 on his desktop got the prompt to register before my legit OEM laptop did. Microsoft pls.
You can fake it to be any type of licence almost, so I'm not surprised
I still don't get why my laptop hasn't gotten this update, and many others also seem confused by how it picks computers seemingly at random. Are there any official words on why some people just don't get it?
I didn't have it at first too and then I noticed I was running behind on 3 months worth of updates. After installing all of them I got the icon (Asus R510LD)

I have a legit copy of Windows 7 Ultimate and am fully updated, but I never got the notification. I managed to force the tray icon to appear and reserve my copy by following this guide: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-win_upgrade/i-want-to-reserve-my-free-copy-of-windows-10-but-i/848b5cce-958b-49ae-a132-a999a883265b Specifically, this is what did it:
Instructions to run the tool: 1. Go to https://www.dropbox.com/s/0u0au9xgy6ss18p/win10fix_full.zip?dl=0 and download the file. 2. Copy the win10fix_full.bat file to anywhere else like desktop. 3. Right click the file and click run as administrator. 4. Follow the screen instruction untill to come to main menu screen. 5. On main menu screen do step 1 first and check if you go the updates insalled and and then press any key it will take you back to main menu. 6. Now do step 2 which only takes like 1 second and should have the icon in the task bar. Please note this tool is not officially from Microsoft is not sanctioned by them but it has been reviewed by me, is not malicious and certainly makes it easier to get the process done.
Apparently there are prerequisite "optional" updates from way back that are needed to trigger the icon. Step 1 checks for them; if you don't have them you need to get them. If you have them, try fixes in order. Quick fix #2 launched the tray icon for me.
Everyone's getting "validation unsupported OS" mine doesn't even appear, and I'm not getting the icon. It just starts with Validation Code instead of Validation status.
Upgrade, then use the reinstall tool
Excellent it's good to know it'll have a reformat mode!
my laptop can't run windows 10 but it can run 8.1 :(
Is this where I JO?
Interesting is that it showed up on my computer, my dad's from 2007 and a few friend received it too. My brother didn't though, while his hardware is from 2012
My hardware is from 2012 and it showed up for me maybe the Windows key on their PC needs to be reactivated over the phone?

Try this before giving up.
