I seriously doubt the majority of people think that, anyway. It's like people who use words like "irregardless," or use "literally" when it doesn't apply. Lots of people do it, but it's still not a valid usage. Contrast that with misnomers like a pencil lead, or french fires. Pencils no longer have lead, and fires are from Belgium, but they're still proper usage.
