Plans to Build a Real, Burj-Dubai-Sized Starship Enterprise in 20 Years
This is the design of a starship for a science fiction tv show going all the way back to 1966, I seriously doubt that they ever intended for one of these to be built in real life.
It's not about whether or not it could get built in real life back then, it's a question of motivating your design decisions to create plausibility (even if it's just with quasi-science). Seeing how immensely popular Star Trek is, I would've thought the writers came up with a slightly more sophisticated explanation for the ship designs than "it looks cool".
It's a "warp-capable" design, I don't really understand it but I think it's the equivalent of making the front of a seaship V-shaped so that it gets less resistance from the water.
... Like that!
So, other than the ship they're building, it's pretty cool that they're building a ship.
Not really. If someone wants to build a submersible out of newspaper, the fact that they're building a submersible doesn't help.

Unless they are the Mythbusters. Then it is awesome.
Impractical design or not, I'd still love to see it actually built :v:
We don't "need" to start developing space capabilities. It would be awesome, but right now, it's not a real necessity to humanity.
I agree, improving our cost to orbit via commercial competition and creating re-fuelling possibilities in orbit is more important than building stupidly designed ships.
I propose we build the Abaddon.

That way if we find aliens we can tear them apart with our pulse lasers.
I'd rest easy knowing we aren't wasting resources on novel sci-fi designs that may or may not be viable designs at all. If we're going to do this at all, do it our way.
Ion Engines, funny.
Also, i hope they have a large enough dry dock in space to build this. It's not like you could build it on earth.
I'm confused about how we would get it into space
I'm confused about how we would get it into space
You don't get it into space, you build it in space, problem solved.
I fucking hate how I won't be around when all the cool space ships are here :(

But it's a great way to find interesting concepts to put into a fantasy or alternate reality.

They already did that, it's called Star Trek.
Do they really need that laser?
Yes. Commander Shepard.
Speaking of all these big sci-fi spaceships: how the hell do they get things like these into space? I know it's just sci-fi, but I can't help but wonder how something like the Pillar of Autumn got into space. Do they build those ships in space or something?

It's in the article and answered about 3 post above yours.
Yes they would build it in space. Just like the ISS.

Either build it in space or magic it into space. Most sci-fi isn't exactly overly concerned with realism.
ST: E has the only star trek ship design that makes somewhat sense

Why isn't the CN Tower on that chart?

If I were attacking it the first thing I would aim for is those sticks for struts. That is, if they haven't fallen off already during use.

It was built in the Reyes-McLees Shipyards on Mars.

"somewhat sense" still makes no sense, so why not make the cooler looking one

I propose this because it's fucking sexy.
