This is right up there with twirlgate.
To be fair, I use the word coloured. It's not implied to be offensive so why should it be taken in offense?
It shouldn't be, but since it can be, it will be. Amazingly, there are actually situations where identifiers =/= racial slurs.
i never really found "people of colour" all that great either, to be honest it's a small step up from "coloured people" but at the end of the day you're still grouping up everyone who isn't white like as if they're a completely different species
people/person of color was adopted during the civil rights era because "minority" (the go-to politically correct word at the time) is a really inconvenient word to describe yourself as when you are pushing for social and political change. It's similarly archaic and it feels really weird when people, particularly 20 year old white folks, say it.
but black people have literally referred to themselves as 'coloured', or 'people of colour', esp. recently. Tumblr goes mad for that shit. How is that even offensive anyway
i never really found "people of colour" all that great either, to be honest it's a small step up from "coloured people" but at the end of the day you're still grouping up everyone who isn't white like as if they're a completely different species
I'll never get why that's a "step up" It's just a change in grammar. A red fire truck, a fire truck of red. A Brazilian woman. A woman of Brazil. Etc. Regardless, I Don't really like the "person of colour" classification. It lumps it all into "not white," diminishing their actual ethnicity. Are you East Asian? Black? Indian? Who cares, you're all just put under "people of colour."
I don't see the problem. All these terms for all kinds of people constantly change and while people were fine with one word last year, they might bash your head in for it this year. I don't understand people.
Colored hasn't really been the kosher way to address black people for the past 40 years though.
Our society is turning in to one that anyone can be offended and we're expected to fucking coddle them. Everyone is suppose to be a special and awesome, etc, etc. All about who whines the loudest and they get what they want. I say ignore people like this and move on, the less attention we pay to them the better.
we're all coloured/ colorfull when you think about it, excluding those albino subhumans ofcourse
Our society is turning in to one that anyone can be offended and we're expected to fucking coddle them.
No it isn't/it's always been like this.
If she's taking issue with "coloured", then I'd like to file a grievance about "white". I am not a "white" person. This is a white person.
White/black is okay, but you have to remember there was a point in America where there were while people bathrooms and 'colored people' bathrooms (and other similar segregated facilities which would just be everyone else besides white people). The term has shitty origins and it's just much nicer to say black.
Remember "African American"? That was a good one.
He was talking about black people in Britain, some of whom aren't African, most of whom aren't American. :v:
I got really bad news for SH if ya'll think we are ever going to reach a time when literally no one is offended by anything ever.
Of all the things to be offended about, this ranks fairly far down.
i never really found "people of colour" all that great either, to be honest it's a small step up from "coloured people" but at the end of the day you're still grouping up everyone who isn't white like as if they're a completely different species
Oh my god, holy shit. There are differences between people, some are black and some are white, is it actually offensive to acknowledge that?
Colored hasn't really been the kosher way to address black people for the past 40 years though.
What's the least offensive identifier? I'm not saying it's always 100% necessary to be like, "that person who is *INSERTRACEHERE*" but in some situations it's really not a racial slur to use an indentifying word or phrase. I have the same level of respect for everyone regardless of race, but that doesn't mean that the existence of different races just disappears or should be ignored/avoided rather than celebrated.
they have the word Negro on black crayola crayons. I shit you not.
Negro is spanish for black...
Oh my god, holy shit. There are differences between people, some are black and some are white, is it actually offensive to acknowledge that?
nah, i'm not trying to imply that it's just that
It lumps it all into "not white," diminishing their actual ethnicity. Are you East Asian? Black? Indian? Who cares, you're all just put under "people of colour."
"African American" is a stupid term. Many black people are neither African nor American. "Black" is fine. Colored is dated but not inherently offensive. All skin colors are subject to generalization, including whites. That's because it's easy and being specific is not generally necessary.
nah, i'm not trying to imply that it's just that
Ah right fair enough it's less an issue with acknowledging differences and more on the specific terminology, fair enough chief that's reasonable.
Regardless, I Don't really like the "person of colour" classification. It lumps it all into "not white," diminishing their actual ethnicity. Are you East Asian? Black? Indian? Who cares, you're all just put under "people of colour."
Already covered this but person of color was never intended to be used to describe East Asian or Indian people. This is owed to the fact that people using it now don't really understand the historical context. Just wish people would stop using it. [editline]27th January 2015[/editline]
What's the least offensive identifier?
It doesn't matter what I say because some smartass is going to pipe up with his fresh out of the oven Tumblr or Twitter post where one person in 7 billion gets offended over whatever word I used. That's the only reason these threads exist and it's the second one Moonless has made in as many days. But black. Black is entirely fine to use.
they have the word Negro on black crayola crayons. I shit you not.
You know that means black in spanish right?
Wow of course the denizens of RacistPunch, specifically the board Shitsationlist Hitlerlines don't see a problem with this horrendous offense. Mr. Cumbersnatch needs to seek forgiveness from Obama.
Which term should I be using right now? They all keep changing so fast, I can't keep up with the new ones.
they have the word Negro on black crayola crayons. I shit you not.
is this an attempt at a joke i can't really tell
Hey at least it's not as bad as a "person of Colour" (POC) which is somehow acceptable but more racist then just saying black.
White/black is okay, but you have to remember there was a point in America where there were while people bathrooms and 'colored people' bathrooms (and other similar segregated facilities which would just be everyone else besides white people). We didn't invent new terms for "blond" just because blond people were regarded as more pure by Nazis. [editline]27th January 2015[/editline]
nah, i'm not trying to imply that it's just that
It lumps it all into "not white," diminishing their actual ethnicity.
The internet isn't really a place for people with no backbone or with strong feelings about this shit. Seriously, everyone needs to grow up and take a punch or so and not cause a freaking riot on this crap.
Nobody's causing a riot over this, quit blowing things out of proportion.
Clearly the solution is just to use the most racist terms possible so theres no confusion over how it'll be taken [editline]27th January 2015[/editline]
That alone shouldn't be a reason, what's bad about it isn't the denomination, it's the segregation.
