Link teased to not be hero in new Legend of Zelda game
This would be the 4th or 5th game where Link starts without his tunic so it wouldn't be that surprising.
Yeah, I think in one of the GBA games they all had different tunics too.
I didn't get the sarcasm across I guess, but I mean that in a series like LoZ, where so little is set in stone, saying that the gender needs explanation is like saying that a non-green tunic colour needs explanation.
Here's a nice high-res image of the new Link.

When I was watching the trailer, I thought for a second that it might be Zelda riding the horse too. Considering Nintendo's conference had so many playable female characters it wouldn't surprise me if the new Link is either a woman or gender ambiguous.
This is a really weird move from Nintendo.
I mean, why would they give Link a blue shirt instead of green without explaining it?
They look a bit like Wind Waker Link's blue PJs so it wouldn't surprise me if Link gets a more traditional outfit later and they just put him/her in this new one to spark discussion.
It's a damn sight better than the outfit he wore in Twilight Princess. I'm still not sure what the fuck that was supposed to be.
for real tho i dont care if the protag is link or not but if the protagonist is in any way female then i would have immediately bought a wii u for it if i didnt already have one

Reminds me of a grown-up Wind Waker Link.
Looks a lot less feminine in that shot too.
I don't see how it could be bad to play as Female Link, as it wouldn't change anything. Hell, you wouldn't even need to change the model.
All sorts of shit happen in TLoZ, genderswapping would be a great addition.
[sp]purest form of love zelda x link[/sp]
If it's not link, the story could be based around the fact that link is nowhere to be found to save Hyrule, and you have to take the matter to your own hands, assuming the role of link. Kinda like Lucina assuming the role of Marth in fire emblem awakening. That could introduce some character customisation too.

But all of the zelda games are someone assuming the role of the hero of time.
None of them know they're Link.
Else the rules of Hyrule would just, you know, have a quick look around for anyone called Link every time shit starts to hit the fan.
Also, can anyone explain why link is seemingly so ageless? Unless the timeline hasn't like, taken that long?
I really don't understand a lot about zelda to be honest

What does his name mean too ultimately?

zelda games never take place in the same time and place, the exception to the rule is Majora's Mask which is a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time
every time it's a different reincarnation of Link and Zelda

it's a different link in every game
Maybe the Legend of Zelda will actually have Zelda as the protagonist.
When my brother was in high school they had a pop quiz in class. The teacher asked "Who is the main chracter in the Legend of Zelda games?" and everyone said Zelda. My brother convinced his team to say Link, but they got it wrong because the teacher was adamant he's called Zelda.

So to put it short "some kind of weird dark souls shit where time is convoluted"
then again, feels like it'd be more related to alternate dimensions.

it's sort of like the 'james bond/007 is a codename not a person' thing
except instead of a secret agent 'link' is the legendary hero of time

Isn't Phantom Hourglass a sequel to Wind Waker?
edit: And the Adventure of Link a sequel to the original Legend of Zelda?

I like to think its a single legend being retold by different cultures and people. Like the wind waker is being told by seafaring folk so hyrule is a vast sea or twilight princess is being told in a very dark age like era.
If anyone is curious, here's the official Zelda timeline picture.

Skyward Sword was, chronologically, the first game in the series, and revealed that [sp]Zelda is the mortal incarnation of Hylia, goddess of Hyrule (not one the goddesses in OoT), Link is the reincarnation of Hylia's friend, the first Link, and that the reason the cycle repeats is because when Link defeated Ganondorf's predecessor Demise, Demise vowed that his anger would be reborn again and again for all eternity. Zelda and Link will always rise to fight it.[/sp]
"Hero of Time" refers exclusively to the Link from OoT and MM (he was in TP too but he was dead and not the MC).
MM is the direct sequel to OoT. Same Link.
Phantom Hourglass is the direct sequel to Wind Waker. Same Link. By the time of Spirit Tracks, that Link is long dead.
The new playable character won't be Link.
It'll be....
“So, by no means, am I tired of it. Rather, the more we change it, the more I get fired up. Having someone think ‘Huh? Is this Zelda?!’ at first, then ‘Oh, it is Zelda,’ is what we’re going for. Something that wouldn’t make it matter whether Link or Princess Zelda appear in it or not. Something where it wouldn’t even matter if Zelda is actually a princess, or not.”
how did I miss that date
but still, it shows that they are changing up the usual Zelda formula and that this may be the result of that
man i wouldn't really care if they made link a girl, if they made zelda the main character though i'd want them to actually make the game play differently to other games. zelda has enough recurring elements (ie preference of bows and magic over swordplay, alter egos and aliases) to make for a really different type of game. they could do some neat stuff with it.
After rewatching the trailer I just noticed the horse in the trailer isn't Epona.
I like how its a silent protagonist that generally doesn't have a typical romantic relationship in the game. I wouldn't mind if this link was a female.
Although I wouldn't be surprised if Zelda was pretending to be the hero in the prophesies or something. Just a new look at what skyward sword established would be a breath of fresh air that hardly effects a series a lot of us love.
Still, an MORE open world Zelda game sounds like I need a wiiU
I have a theory, feel free to tell me why it's wrong.
This is Link and Zelda's son/daughter and it takes place in the timeline after Spirit Tracks.

"This new Hyrule wasn't likely to see the return of Ganon, the Triforce, or the Master Sword (maybe explains the bow being the new main weapon?) The bloodlines of those tied to the ancient kingdom were growing thin."
There won't be any more incarnations of Link and Zelda in that timeline so instead they settle down and have a kid?
Also maybe since it's much farther in the timeline that explains the technology (laser arrows)?
How about they rename the franchise "Legend of Link" like it should be?
Not "Legend of Zelda, the bitch who sits in her castle and does nothing but take all the credit"?
-snip-
Why are there so many babies complaining about the new Link possibly being a girl? It doesn't even matter - if it's Link, the gameplay will be the same, regardless of whether the Link we're talking about has boobs.
And stop with the "SJWs made Nintendo do this!!!" stuff. It's just that Nintendo is breaking out of its conservative shell. It's kept Nintendo alive for so long but Japan's major corporations are beginning to experience the wave of social progress. Their products don't need to conform to traditionalist viewpoints as much - of course, Nintendo has been almost as liberal as it gets in the video game industry for a looong time, but the pressure to stay conservative has always been there from the start, and it's noticeable.
I don't own any consoles at all, let alone a WiiU, but I'm still looking forward to this game's release, especially if the protagonist is female.
