Families Earning $300K+ Get Financial Aid. And It's Happening More and More.

It was funny when i went to a private school, when we had to move we cut and run without paying the fees.(there's my parents then me, my bro and nan) We can barely scrape together $20,000. I'm pretty sure here in Australia you're considered poor if you earn under 120k . I'm fortunate enough to have parents that'll stop drop and do anything to pay for my education. When i was about 10 years old, we had to sell our fridge so we could rent a truck to move our shit.We moved over 900km's to our new destination in about 2 days flat.
My father just gives us enough to pay rent and buy food and barely pay bills for the month nothing more.
Yeah medication costs a fuck load if your not on the dole.
Good. Now i can buy more things i want
There are a lot of daffy things when it comes to schooling. Because I go to a state college, I really dont get very much aid, and I am really struggling financially, whereas if I had made it into my first choice school, Cornell, it would have been free. Ivy league schools are really good about funding those who actually need it.
Wait a minute before you start saying anything my parents collectively make 175000$ a year. And between 3 kids college payments and taxes we are poor.
My dad has a very good waiter job and my mom works in the mta. Maybe 300000 is alot but if you make 200000 and have alot of kids it isnt alot
[editline]10th May 2012[/editline]
My dads a waiter and my mom works in the mta, they have 3 kids and have yo pay out rageous bills and taxes. They make together 150000 a year but we cant even afford college payments and they work the whole day its not alot when you have kids and high taxes
My parents make about 20k year together, but I don't live in US either
What kind of elite schools are we talking about where 300k a year is not enough?
My parents make 100000 a year, but my dads a waiter and my mom works in a subway booth. Tgey have 3 kids and between bills and housepayments and college we are poor as fuck
Theres a difference between 150000 and no kids and 150000 and kids.
they are the assholes that give me and my mom no money with $0 a year
unemployment has thrown us off fuck

they don't understand that PRIVATE SCHOOL ISN'T A FUCKING NECESSITY, if you can't afford private school go to fucking public school and i swear you won't die
I've heard my mom talking about this girl who works at the factory with her or something.
Her dad apparently is retired, earning retired funds and whatnot, and still working on the side.
So, even though he might not be getting a shitload of money like on this article, he still gets alot, compared to for example my parents that put together might not get as much money as this guy.
I have no idea how this kind of people keeps on getting, yet when its poor average joes (like me for example), we get cut off of any aid and get prices raised.
So with my dad, the main source of income in my family, being unemployed for the 15 months prior to me entering college, I received absolutely nothing. I didn't even qualify for a work study program. But they get aid?
Oh wait, read the article a little more, this is those private high schools that charge the same as a college that are giving out money, not federal aid. Unfortunately, yea, they do what they want. It's also partly due to the fact that the administrations of these schools probably know these parents. (aka golfing buddies or something of that nature) and they're just doing 'em a favor based on that friendship or whatnot. Those schools are crazy.
Oh shit! That means that I can file that I make Less then 5k a year, working at subway, and still get some great FSA?
Just be sure ti let your parents know beforehand, because they get large tax breaks if you are considered a depandant. And its kind of fraud to say you are independant, but yet you miht still live with your parents and/or rely on their income and welfare. I'm nit sure its seomthig they can really investigate thoguh.
I thought he was referring to universities akin to private schooling, but realised that essentially all unis in the US are private in that you have to pay out the arse to get in :/
That's not really true. Each state has at least 2 to 3 state funded universities id wager. They still cost a ton, because they still rely on tuition for almost all of their funding, but they are still cheaper than private. Something like that would never happen though - the private school industry is too massive to simply allow the government to take away the only thing that most students can use to even get to their school.
One one hand, I hate it when people that are employees making over 100K say they can't afford things. Sell the fucking BMW, sell the house with 20 rooms you never use and downsize.

hey, I come from a family that make just over 100K a year, guess what, we have a 3 bedroom home for 5 people.
We dont have a BM, we dont have much money, 100K is now a days very difficult to live off of for a family of 5, so stop assuming things like a jackass and actually look into things

Jesus fuck I know a family of 6 who lives off of 20k a year. Note they're not hungry or dirty, have enough money for all basic needs. Sure they're not luxurious and are outdated, but hey it's 20k.
How can people claim to be poor when getting 100+k a year is really weird to me.
That's retarded... Greedy fuckers.

Exactly!
private schools are cesspools of sheltering and ignorance
shoving a bunch of rich white kids with other rich white kids is a recipe for a bunch of rich white self-entitled racist assholes and it shows among their students
I say this living right in the middle of an area with half a dozen private schools (I go to a public school in another part of town)
As someone who is more than familiar with private schooling, I can confirm this. I remember being told homeless people are homeless due to being scummy alchoholics

not claiming to be poor, claiming its not as easy as it seems

The problem is they don't actually want to decrease their quality of life, since that's something that traditionally only happened to the poor or lower middle class, who have had to make REAL sacrifices such as not getting ANY college or ANY health care

I am quite sure people can loan college. Otherwise there would be much less students in debt. Not sure about healthcare.

Loans work when you have money to pay it off with. If it looks like you don't have enough money to pay it off, why would someone give you that money?
I am quite sure people can loan college. Otherwise there would be much less students in debt. Not sure about healthcare.
Yeah that too, the point is that lower income people make the biggest sacrifices, and for the first time ever some upper middle classes have had to make sacrifices that only poorer Americans have had to make for a while, and allot find it unacceptable.
FUCK THEM.
I actually need this stuff, and THEY get it. Fuck this system.

That's capitalism so better get used to it

His family earns 100k a year, I think that's a good enough backing. Also college loans in US are easy to get, too easy.
This is all kinds of fucked up. What the hell is wrong with America?
Where is this aid coming from anyway? It's a private school so it's their own money? Why don't they lower the cost of entering instead?
It's nasty, but private schools have always been for those with too much money in their pockets.
My mom works two jobs and my dad works one. We make like 80k a year, when the majority of people in my town make 400k a year off of a single working parent.
Call it "poor angst" if you want, but I get pretty pissed off at incredibly rich people.

400k? Jesus fuck, they earn more in a month than most in a year. What kind of jobs are we talking about?
I come from one of those families, and I have to disagree with the idea that we're either pampered or disillusioned with the needs of others. I guess it's just as anecdotal as your statement, but we look to live within our means and not spend frivolously, along with the rest of the people in our neighborhood.
Are you trying to prove that people that make 200k are more deserving of aid than people who make 30k? And yeah, people like that are disillusioned if they think it is acceptable to keep their BMW and take aid from the government.
My dad makes 112k a year and my mom gets a good amount of social security because she's disabled
With 2 kids in college and 3 cars to gas up/insure/repair, and a whole bunch of other shit it's hard for us to make ends meet and still budget for emergencies. So when cars break down for example, it's devastating
This post really made me laugh. You have three fucking cars. Three. When a car breaks down, you can use one of the other two.
People with one car which they can barely afford can call it breaking down devastating. You can't. That's just bad taste.
I harbor no resentment towards those who are well-off, but in my mind it's really hard to hash out where all of the money goes.
Between my mother and father, my family makes $45K a year. This is supporting a family of two plus myself, currently attending college and getting help from my family financially. I wouldn't call our family poor. We live modestly and, most importantly, within our means to keep it all together.
It boggles my mind to see families making $100k+ a year "struggling" to put kids through college. What?
No. You aren't struggling. If you call that struggling, you need a reality check.
Even considering a higher tax rate, those families still pull in more than families who make less. This isn't rocket science. Live within your means. If you can't afford private school, you can't afford private school.
If your parents don't have the money to fund your college education, then you fucking work and earn your way through school. You take out loans and work your ass off to pay them back once you've acquired the education that allows you to get a good job. There are options out there for you. You are not helpless.
ITT: Rich people think it's hard to make ends meet when poor have been living like that forever and never had any luxuries.
