I don't think it's really a hygiene issue as much as it is diet/individual differences - some are just more overpowering than others. If you over-wash a vagina or use strong soap it can even make it worse and sometimes cause infection.

I haven't read past the abstract, as I don't really feel like reading a full research paper currently. Do they mention how frequently the women who did douche did so? Light cleaning with water around the external portions of the genitals. The rest pretty much deals with it's self. Once a week internal cleaning would most likely be okay, most evidence shows(by which I mean multiple sources I have seen over time) that so long as women didn't douche more often than once every week or two it has a minimal risk. Daily or such would be like asking for trouble though. Edit: There are other risks associated with cleaning after there is a vaginal infection, but i'm just going to stick to people who don't have infections since that would be what we are talking about. I would like to point out though that somehow a lot of (mostly younger I would think) women don't know that they have an infection and assume the vagina just smells bad as a standard thing. Cleaning in those cases would make it worse and make it more likely for the infection to spread beyond the vagina past the cervix and then bad things happen.
