And I bet it has even worse sound card functionality than W7, along with a whole new slew of cut back end functions like every version of windows post XP. I'll pass.
For $40 I'm willing to put aside my grievances with Metro.
This is great. I want to do this, but if I get a new mobo after I'd be screwed over right or can I contact MS?
Classic Shell, ViStart, or an in-between Start8 and there you go.
Am I going to have to replace system files to get it like I want it or is there a handy little checkbox in the W8 control panel to do that?
So weird that they got rid of the start button. Like every keyboard has a start menu button, so will be weird not having it anymore
That button on the keyboard is essentially the button for the start menu now.
I'm still a bit sceptical about Windows 8, even after trying the Preview, but at that price I think I'm just going to jump in and see how it goes.
Am I going to have to replace system files to get it like I want it or is there a handy little checkbox in the W8 control panel to do that?
They're all 3rd party applications, all you need to do is click next several times through an installer and it'll add a button and a start menu for you. Or in the case of Start8 it'll give you a button and a non-fullscreen Start screen.
I guess I should finally update vista then
Is it worth upgrading from 7? Because I don't really like the new UI, but if it's faster...
For $40 I'm heavily considering this. This is the cheapest upgrade ever and if I don't like it I'm sure all I have to do is run my Windows 7 disc and reformat the system. Which is fine really. I don't have much to lose on this PC.
Is it worth upgrading from 7? Because I don't really like the new UI, but if it's faster...
Once you get used to it I would say so.
Now nobody has an excuse that they cannot upgrade from XP.
XP to 7 is an "upgrade" but from what I have heard about 8 so far, XP to 8 is more or less a downgrade.
"This upgrade promotion for Windows 8 Pro both online and at retail runs through January 31st, 2013." Does this mean it's not available until then? Because I want to buy this now!
XP to 7 is an "upgrade" but from what I have heard about 8 so far, XP to 8 is more or less a downgrade.
What's so bad outside the UI?
that start button be smacked up but thats okay I can moss without it.
Downgrading is a no no if I remember correctly.
Format your HDD, then install using the original disc. No problemo. I don't see how it wouldn't work. The upgrade is it's own file.
XP to 7 is an "upgrade" but from what I have heard about 8 so far, XP to 8 is more or less a downgrade.
at this point xp to vista is an upgrade
That button on the keyboard is essentially the button for the start menu now.
Wait so there is a start menu but you press the button on the keyboard to access it?
Maybe because your OS is 10 years old. For $40 I would upgrade all my computers in the house to W8 (if they had XP still.. ) It would be stupid not to upgrade
There isn't even a start button. I'm honestly surprised so many FPer's like this. It's not that it's bad, but it just seems pointless right now to upgrade, especially if the deal still stands in the future. I mean, I have Windows 7, I'm fine and comfortable with it, why upgrade?
Wait so there is a start menu but you press the button on the keyboard to access it?
Metro is pretty much a fullscren prompt version of the start menu.
Still can't afford it.
To everyone complaining about the lack of start button. Here is an idea. LOOK AT YOUR KEYBOARD. For everyone else "Already purchased a Windows 7 PC? Great, we’ve still got you covered. If you bought a PC preinstalled with Windows 7 Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate on or after June 2, 2012, just go to windowsupgradeoffer.com and register. We'll send you an email with your promotion code and purchase instructions when Windows 8 Pro is available. You can then download and install Windows 8 Pro on a compatible PC with Windows Upgrade Assistant." Does this mean that I can't get this deal since I built my PC a couple months ago?
Wow, so how much is it to just buy Windows 8?
XP to 7 is an "upgrade" but from what I have heard about 8 so far, XP to 8 is more or less a downgrade.
Where do you get your info from?
Why would I want to upgrade? I could buy several games on Steam with that money rather than paying for the new OS with even less features. No thank you Mircosoft.
Less features sounds cool to me considering the fact that it'll have only what I fucking need facepunch, games, bullshit seriously, that's ALL a computer needs for me. You know... what is actually rawly useful.
Where do you get your info from?
His uninformed opinion.
I just realized that all these new upgrades will probably make some of my older games obsolete and unplayable :(
windows 7 pro comes with a winXP virtual machine so your old shit will still work, assuming win8 pro comes with the VM too
And somehow idiots still complain, even though this is a fifth cheaper than Windows has ALWAYS been.
